#3 I believe I was the last American to visit the Paracels. The major island had elements of a guano operation, and there existed the remnants of a French encampment that also included a prison of sorts. The islands were the seeding grounds for tortoise (which are now likely gone giving Chinese eating habits). Archived in Hue were ancient maps proving Vietnamese occupation of the islands over the centuries. It is thought that the TET offensive invaders destoyed many ancient Vietnamese territorial maps (including I believe the maps on the Paracels) as the invaders used the books in their defensive positions. In sum, the Chinese claim to the Paracels, like other islands in the South China Sea is based on a single map produced in the 14th century by a Chinese explorer, and not upon occupation.
