I’m sure he went to mass, Procopius2k. 1492 was the year of the Expulsion, when the Jews were required to convert or leave Spain following the completion of the Reconquista and a century of massacres against the Jews for various reasons. Quite a few left — north into Europe, especially Amsterdam, and south into Moslem North Africa, as far as Egypt. From Amsterdam a group went with the Dutch to populate New Amsterdam. Of those that stayed, some had converted quite sincerely. Others continued to practice their faith in secret, and it was to ferret those out that the Inquisition was set on them. There are still family lines, in Spain and in the Americas, that have a tradition of family dinners on Friday night, that don’t eat pork, and so on. There have been articles about DNA studies done on some of them, and they turn out to have forgotten Jewish ancestry.
