Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 storm with 120 mph winds on Wednesday near Siesta Key, Florida, slamming into the state's west coast before churning its way eastward.

The hurricane was later downgraded to a Category 2 storm and has since been downgraded to a Category 1 storm.

During an appearance on Fox Weather, St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson confirmed there have been 17 tornadoes along with several fatalities.

As of 1 a.m. Thursday, power was out for more than 2 million customers, with roughly 300,000 customers losing power in one hour.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has activated thousands of National Guard members who are standing by to conduct search and rescue following the storm. President Biden's administration has also pre-deployed resources and hundreds of personnel.

Biden declared Florida a disaster area ahead of Milton's landfall to facilitate FEMA's preparations and response.

#3 It was a 3 when it hit, but had 953mb which means it had a hell of a storm surge. That is what will kill most people.

#6 The storm surge was what I was most worried about.

Because vortex landfall was a bit south of Tampa Bay there was little surge north of Sarasota.

All coastal areas between Sarasota and Ft Myers received some significant storm surge. Charlotte Harbor and Venice look to be especially hard hit but even there the surge seems to have been 5 feet or less.

North of Sarasota, wind and rain were the main problems.

#7 Hurricane Milton Could Be Sum Of All Weather Fears For MacDill Air Force Base

"HRT UPDATE: Our Hurricane Recovery Team is en route to MacDill AFB to begin assessing, identifying and neutralizing hazards. MacDill AFB remains closed at this time and personnel who are not assigned to the HRT should not attempt to access the installation until further notice. Safety of our personnel is our number one priority as we begin our assessments. We will continue to provide updates as quickly as possible."
