As long as there was a threat of Soviet Union, Western decision makers (not necessarily elected ones) kept some touch with reality. Without the threat they (being trained seals of leftard academic pseudo-education) went completely crazy.
That's why, by the way, there is a war in Ukraine - restored Russia is a deadly threat to all their dreams.
