#3 Back in the early 1990s, I was told by a Samsung executive wife that in addition to an engagement ring, the man had to gift his future wife with three sets of jewelry — gold, silver (or white gold or platinum), and pearls — presumably so she would start married life with suitable accessories. Possibly wives of less ambitious men were/are less expensive to marry, but that’s still a big expense for a young man at the early stage of his career.
