#2 Turkey never should have been allowed to enter NATO, but the USA wanted its airbases in Turkey, especially after loosing Wheelus in Libya. The Pentagon does lots of stupid things.

#5 Erdogan has realized that he is hitching his wagon to a stump. Brussels only seems to care about seeing that things are nice in Brussels, and pretty much every recent member has been showing buyers remorse.
He's not sure he can get a better deal from somebody else, so maybe no deal is the best deal.
