#3 Russia has won wars in winter against foreign invaders but hasn't initiated a conflict in midwinter.

The takeover of Crimea began in late February and Crimea isn't as cold as central Ukraine. The physical Russian 'help' to pro Russian citizens of the Donbas area of the Ukraine began in April.
