#10 AFAIK, Hazaras are the principal minority associated with Shiism in Afghanistan. They're said to be descended from Mongol invaders. I thought Islam was supposed to turn the meek into stone killers. Obviously failed with the Hazaras.

TBH, though, what's equally likely is that their Mongol conqueror forebears converted so they wouldn't have to conduct a root and branch extermination of the Muslim subjects they ruled over. Hard to shear a bunch of dead sheep. Same reason Henry of Navarre became a Catholic. Whatever the merits of Tengrism as an aid to morale in wartime, Herat is worth a shahadah.
