#1 ...If you take a look at the plane just before impact, you can see that the wings are still swept back (the Backfire is a swing-wing design), which at least in part explains the speed at which they were coming in. I'm thinking that the wing sweep mechanism may have gone south on them, and the pilot was bringing them down the best he could.

#4 Re#1: Back in my Tomcat days. there was at least 1 recorded instance of one also landing with wings still swept, fortunately there as a long land field cuz, you weren't going to get that back on the boat.

#7 Speaking of yesterday's video, did anyone recognize the not-so-fuzzy one at 2:40? Grey(ish), side view, straight down the runway left to right? Tail reminiscent of Phantom but both wings in horizontal plane? Drove me nuts... so familiar but I couldn't place it.
