I believe the 17th century Massachusetts folk did that before burning a woman at the stake for witchcraft, too.

You put on an apron and a print dress, perm your hair and go for the June Cleaver look. Surprisingly (or not!), this also works if you're a guy.

I remember this on campus in the late 60s when feminism was in its first rage. Everyone dressed down so you couldn't tell who as just plain ugly or just playing ugly. Good birth control practice. What's old is new again. Thank you for self identifying for this generation.
