#5 Hyphenating it emphasizes that jarness of the thing. I've never been sure what that actually means, but clearly it does... especially to the Air Force and Shipman's father. ;-)

#6 "jarhead" is a mild perjorative, used in reference to the Marine high-and-tight haircut.

The proper, familiar, in-tribe term is "devil dog." Being a "squid" myself, I generally prefer using the honorific "Marine."

#8 @#7: Been awhile since I heard that one! I believe it was popularized, at least locally at Offutt, by "The Offul Times" (of which I still have original copies.)

But, sadly, SAC is no longer - usurped by STRATCOM.
