#1 Mother Russia cries for the return of her Little Russias. Putin polls 80%(!) approval amongst his fellow Russians. IMO, the U.S. does not belong in Russias backyard. It is not in our sphere of influence - and there is no 'genocide' etc. going on.

#3 Yes, Russia is a far sexier bogyman to play up against than, say, securing your own southern border against ~~human traffickers~~ Mexican slavers and ~~cartels~~ Apaches. You can't justify new and very expensive tech and toys to Congress by missions dealing with the fundamental securing of the borders of the homeland. Who needs F35s on the Rio Grande?
