#1 Where oh where to begin ...

To wit,

* SINA > RUSSIA WANTS ARCTIC OCEAN TO BE "RUSSIAN OCEAN"?

OTOH WASHINGTON TIMES > RUSSIA SEEKS [renewed]SEA POWER WID DECREPIT FLEET.

* CHINESE MILITARY FORUM > CHINA, SOUTH KOREA SLAM JAPAN CLAIMS OVER DISPUTED ISLANDS [China = Daoyus,Japan = Senkakus; ROK = Dokdo, Japan = Takeshima].

East China Sea rocks-n-reefs.

UW CONTINENTAL SHELFS?

* TOPIX > EXPERT: CHINA'S SITUATION IS LIKE THE USSR, + NO ONE WANTS TO BE GORBACHEV.

* SAME > EXPERT: JAPAN SEEKS MILITARY COMEBACK, i.e. "military independence" ultimately from USA as per review of newly released Defense White Paper.

* SAME > CHINESE NAVY HAS JAPAN WORRIED.

PLAN LR NavOps becoming more and more "routine" in strategic rear areas; Continued expansion of PLAN operating areas widin + beyond "First Island Chain".

OTOH SAME > JAPAN WARY OF CHINESE ARMY'S GROWING ROLE IN GOVT. POLICY.

1930'S Militarist Japan = 2012+ China + PLA???

* SAME > JAPAN'S PRO-BOMB VOICES [re-arm, indigenous nuke arsenal] RISE AS NUKE POWER DEBATED.

* SAME > JAPAN WORRIED OVER CHINA, TAIWAN CLAIMS TO OKINAWA SOVEREIGNTY | COMMENTARY: CHINA CAN AFFORD TO LOSE DAOYUS, BUT NOT OKINAWA.

* SAME > [CSIS Think-Tank] REPORT: [US should]MOVE MORE SUBS, AMPHIBS TO ASIA-PACIFIC REGION.
Among other, re-deploy three additional Subs to Guam, but rethink transfer of 4,700 Marines [down from 8000] from Okin to same.

IIUC, GUAM MAY SEE LESS THAN 1500 OKI MARINES PERMANENTLY STATIONED HERE???

* SAME > "RESPOND STRONGLY" TO INDIA [+ Vietnam's] MOVES IN SOUTH CHINA SEA: CHINESE MEDIA.

Unilateral Indo-Viet Oil-Gas/Energy Surveys, etc. in SCS widout Beijing's approval = gross violation of China's sovereign territory, CHINESE FAILURE TO RESPOND EFFECTIVELY OR DECISVELY TO ILLEGAL ACTIONS BY FOREIGN STATES TO BE SEEN AS A WEAKNESS TO BE EXPLOITED.

* SINA > JAPAN FM: US CONFIRMS DAOYU ISLANDS FALLS WITHIN US-JAPAN SECURITY TREATY.

* SINA > JAPAN MEMORIAL ON DAOYUS ISLANDS [WW2 Naval, Civilian dead on Daoyus] TO FURTHER POISON TIES WID CHINA.

#2 All sounds very good on paper. However, unlike weapons in a rack, or ammo in sealed waterproof containers, MRAPS and the like, have systeme that need periodic exercising. When deployed, the civilian contractor tail for these systems is currently pretty large. Maintaining them at 10/20 Army readiness standards while afloat or in a depot will continue to be a huge challenge.

#4 P2K.... your thoughts on how long those MRAPS would survive (less contractor tail) if donated to the host nation. Six months, a year?

#5 Most likely driven by what the Army calls operations tempo. Less use, longer life. Your estimate is probably on the low OPTEMPO level. Somehow they seem to keep those Japanese small trucks running. It will be the usual evolution of hanger queens [pristine but seldom used] and gradual cannibalization of the rest of the fleet to keep something going. Somewhere in their minds will be a trade off between hauling the big boys or loading into those Japanese trucks for missions. Remember, life is cheap in many of those areas. Better to save the use of something you may need in a big fight than burn it up doing the 'little stuff'.

#6 Thanks! Ford RANGERS was my guess as well. Much easier to clean up after an IED. Smaller, basketball size pieces, scattered over a wider area.

#7 Get VW group to make all the equipment, my old Golf sat in the rain unused for months, charged the battery and off it goes again...

#8 RUSSIA WANTS ARCTIC OCEAN TO BE "RUSSIAN OCEAN"?

Fleet only made of Icebreakers? OR LOTS OF STUCK/marooned ships?
