All thing equal, AYMAN ZAWAHIRI'S greatest single drawback to taking over fully from Osama is his AGE, despite support for him from the major AQ Affiliates [AQIM, AQI, AQAP aka AQIY, + now Al-Shabaab] as their preferred Osama successor - the only AQ Affiliates missing is AQ-in-TransJordan + AQ-in-Gaza.

* TOPIX/WORLD NEWS > VARIOUS > AWLAKI + ADAM GADAHN = "HAVE THE WILL, BUT NOT THE CREDENTIALS OR THE STATURE" [yet] widing Al-Qaeda + Radical Islam to takeover from Osama. IIUC, not yet to even challenge or oppose AYMAN ZAWAHIRI'S ASCENSION.

The above being said, Al-QAEDA = "CORE AL-QAEDA/QAIDA" is no different than any other MilTerr organization in having field forces composed mostly of young men whom want their Senior + Top Leader(s) to routinely lead from the front. IFF AYMAN DESIRES TO TAKEOVER SO-CALLED "CORE AQ'S" REINS FROM OSAMA, HE CANNOT IGNORE OR CIRCUMVENT THEM.
