#1 Sex in church has long been a silly thing. Back in the middle ages, marriage was bawdy, often with nudity degenerating into an orgy.

Priestly rites were half-and-half Christian and pagan, and only the upper classes were particularly formal, as marriages were arranged for financial and political reasons. Only with the advent of the middle classes did it become the prudish and superstitious rituals we know today.
