#2 Actually, Karzai's not doing badly at all, considering he's trying to run Afghanistan. Remember that after the Sovs were kicked out the Afghans were unable to establish a stable government - too many warlords, too many gun-totin' heroes, and too many Arabs thinking they were in charge. Hamid's doing a careful balancing act, playing one warlord off against the other, balancing the Pashtuns, who are where the Taliban came from, against the Northern Alliance, who were the guys that bled and died to establish the regime he now heads. And he's got his own man in Khost right now, which was the toughest nut to crack, and Badsha Khan Zadran's off trying to join up with Hekmatyar.

Notice that the guy who was going to assassinate him isn't an Afghan - he's an Arab. It'll be touch and go for years, and if he gets killed it could be dog-eat-dog again, but I think the guys with the guns (Ismail Khan, Dostum, and even the incompetent Gul Agha) realize that if things go back to the Hekmatyar-Rabbani era they all lose.
