#1 Reparations were paid 1861-5. On a rough calculation the 39,000 from NY were in a country that was 1/10th size it is today. So in modern projection that would be 390,000 in today's population.

#5 Ohio’s population in 1860 was 2.3 million including 37,000 African American. 300,000 served in the Union forces, more than 10%. 35,475 Ohioans died, almost as many deaths as all US forces in the Korean Conflict. Based on the rural nature of Ohio, at the time, it is conceivable that half of the men that died never met an African American prior to their enlistment. The same ratios would likely hold for other states. They were an amazing generation.
