If the Feebs had jumped on this kid in 2023, half of us would be on their case for prosecuting "thought" crimes because back then that's all it was. Now the shrink(s) who mishandled the Covenant murderess had plenty of info that she was batshit crazy and didn't do anything constructive about it. Maybe instead of the Feebs, the APA should be getting the butt-kicking.

Most states still forbid both professionals and relatives from forcing mental health treatment on anyone aged eighteen or over beyond a three-day hospital stay for evaluation. And even a three-day stay for evaluation generally can’t be forced on an 18+ adult unless the judge agrees the person is an imminent danger to self or others, where imminent danger requires being in the process at that moment of physically attempting murder or suicide.

It is not a crime to be crazy. It is a crime to force them to become sane. Three cheers for the post-One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest era — welcome to Heinlein’s Crazy Years. They look pretty much as predicted, except that we never did get a worldwide single government.
