Day 6: Turkey’s protests emerge as the biggest Social Uprising in a decade

, widespread protests continued for the sixth consecutive night, resulting in the arrest of over a thousand people and severe crackdowns by security forces. The unrest, which began after the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, has now evolved into one of the largest movements of civil disobedience the country has seen in over a decade.
Reports indicate that during the sixth night of protests, Ottoman Turkish police used tear gas, plastic bullets, and water cannons to disperse the crowds. Images from major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir show intense confrontations between protesters and security forces.
Turkey’s Interior Minister confirmed that over 1,133 people have been arrested across the country, with the number increasing since the protests began on March 19. Among those detained are at least 10 journalists who were covering the events.
The level of violence has been described by eyewitnesses as shocking, with police allegedly using excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. The protests began after Ekrem Imamoglu’s arrest on March 19, charged with "financial corruption" and "ties to terrorist organizations." Opposition groups view the arrest as a political maneuver to eliminate Imamoglu, a major rival to President Erdogan in the upcoming elections.
What started as protests in Istanbul quickly spread to over 55 provinces out of 81 in Turkey. Slogans such as "Erdogan Resign" and "Justice for Imamoglu" echoed through the streets.
In response to the protests, the Ottoman Turkish government has implemented strict measures, including banning public gatherings in major cities and limiting access to social media platforms like X, YouTube, and Instagram, in an attempt to control the situation. Erdogan has labeled the protests as a "violent mostly peaceful movement" and accused the Republican People’s Party (CHP) of inciting unrest.
The widespread crackdown has sparked international condemnation. The European Commission, along with countries like Germany and La Belle France, has criticized the actions, seeing them as a regression of democracy in Turkey.
