Illinois Board of Education to Use Nearly $20 Million in Federal Grants on Electric School Buses
Anybody interesting getting the money? This should prove amusing when winter temperatures make the silly things inoperable.
[Breitbart] Several Illinois school districts will be receiving millions in federal grant dollars to purchase electric school buses to replace gas-powered ones, Board of Education officials said.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) announced on December 19 that it had been awarded a $19.9 million grant from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiative “made possible by President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.”

The initiative, called the Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant (CHDV) program, is doling out more than $400 million to communities across the country in areas that have been designated as being in “non-attainment” with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS).

The nearly $20 million will be distributed to nine Illinois school districts in order to replace 70 traditional school buses with “zero-emission” electric buses, as well as to install electric vehicle charging stations for each new bus and to conduct workforce training to “support these new technologies,” the ISBE said.

#1 Currently (no pun intended)
After about 2,500-3,200 charges, many Large Electric Vehicle batteries start losing battery charging capacity on an increasing scale.

Meaning, the ROI is fewer miles per $$$/charge.

Then there is the Electric Bill, Special charging areas, Special Fire Suppression Equipment needed, Special Trained Maintenance personnel higher salaries, Cost of Replacement in the $30K+, and finally the Environmental impact issues / Hazmat for disposal.

So in 6+/- years they'll likely need 4x's the original amount to replace the batteries, disposal costs.

OBTW: Illinois gets cold as a Well Digger A$$, and EV batteries don't like that either, nor the Road Salts.

100% EV's, typically, lose an average of 41% of their range when outdoor temperatures drop to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

#4 It's not the stupidest thing they've got going.
They've also been buying electric snowplows.

That should prove interesting with the cold and salt (especially in Chicago where they dump salt 'pellets' the size of baseballs all over the road).

#7 maybe Illinois will be smart and deploy the EV school buses near, say, Cairo

....Oh, yeah - salt brine on the batteries. Gonna look like an outtake from an action movie.

#9 In addition to reduced range, another disadvantage of EVs in winter is that you don't get all that yummy warm "waste heat" from the engine to de-ice the windshield and warm the cabin.
