German FM Baerbock Is Considering German Participation In Gaza Protection Force

[NTV] For an agreement between Israel and Hamas, a three-phase plan is on the table that gives rise to international hope for an end to the war in Gaza. Foreign Minister Baerbock makes it clear that Germany would participate in an international protection force.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has brought into play a German participation in a protection force for the Gaza Strip. "As we have made it clear to Ukraine, we stand up for its freedom and for its peace, this also applies to me to the Middle East. If it now not only needs a reconstruction, but an international protection force that guarantees that we will finally, finally come to peace in the Middle East, then this is also our joint mission," said the Green politician at a small party congress of her party in Potsdam.

A humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza War is possible, said Baerbock. This must include a cessation of the Hamas attacks, a release of the Israeli hostages and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

During an appearance at the German Catholic Day in Erfurt, Baerbock was asked about her push, but she did not want to give any details with regard to international talks. She mentioned the possibility of a protection force for the current occasion, "because in my view now is the moment when we make clear what we have already discussed with others: We stand by a responsibility, without the details now, we have not even discussed them."

And she added: "Now, in the last 24 or a little more hours, a new three-phase plan is on the table. And that's why I said this so clearly today that Germany is right behind it. That the other hostages are released, that Hamas can stop the shelling and then gradually withdraw the Israeli army. And if it then needs further contributions for security, for reconstruction, for the further ceasefire and for peace, then it is clear to me that our country is also there. And in what way, again, we will discuss this when we hopefully have this ceasefire, which is now on the table."
In Potsdam, Baerbock had explained how much Germany owed to its European neighboring countries, the European Union and the former opponents of the Second World War. "The fact that we can live freely and in peace in the heart of Europe is because others were there for us." Baerbock had been cautious about the Arab League's demand for a UN protection force in the Gaza Strip in mid-May. This requires a humanitarian ceasefire first, she had stressed.
