#1 When lawlessness and protest overwhelm local law enforcement and the military must be brought in, bad things can happen. A teaching moment is likely to be found here somewhere.

#2 I think I've said this before, but it bears repeating: the locals have always sworn that somebody fired on the Guard first.

#3 /\ Yes, some perspective for those times may be in order:

"The 1968 Democratic National Convention protests were a series of protests against the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War that took place prior to and during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. The protests lasted approximately seven days, from August 23 to August 29, 1968."

#4 They burned the ROTC building on the Kent campus. After the shooting no more buildings were burned in protests across the country for years.

#7 Two of my kids are grads. It has changed quite a bit over the years. The town is pretty nice. They still have an ROTC program.

#8 I thought Kent State got rid of the ROTC program at one time and only brought it back years later. IIRC.
