Activists demand assurances for the safety of Muslims in Adigeni
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] Georgian activists blamed the country's authorities for the conflict in Adigeni between Muslims and local residents. The police are obliged to ensure the safety of Muslims, human rights activists pointed out.
I can imagine which ways the betting odds go…
As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, on April 5, residents of Adigeni came out to protest against Muslim meetings in a private house, and security forces were restraining them. The head of the agency for religious affairs said that the owner of the house, Yusuf Mikeladze, does not compromise. Mikeladze called the authorities' proposals unacceptable. Security forces did not allow protesters to approach Mikeladze’s house.

On March 8, dozens of residents of the village of Adigeni in southern Georgia held a protest against Muslims gathering for prayer. There is no mosque in the village, and Muslims gather for prayer on Fridays in the house of Yusuf Mikeladze, where there is a spiritual center. The former mufti of Georgia demanded that the country's authorities investigate the incident. The authorities and law enforcement agencies do not respond to violations of the rights of the Georgian Muslim community, which creates an atmosphere of impunity and  preconditions for renewed violence, human rights activists said. Local residents are unhappy that Muslims from other localities are coming to the village. According to Yusuf Mikeladze, who gathers fellow believers for prayer in his home, visitors do not create problems for the villagers.
That’s how he would see it, certainly. Possibly it’s even true.
Nine non-governmental organizations today issued a joint statement regarding the events of April 5 in Adigeni. “Perhaps specific groups want provocation and tension between Muslims and Christians. Perhaps specific groups are content with this tension. However, the centuries-old history of tolerance, equality and justice of Georgia will not give anyone the opportunity for our peaceful coexistence to be disrupted in the current tense geopolitical situation,” - says a statement received by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Activists held the country's authorities responsible for their failure to defuse the conflict in Adigeni and called for effective steps to ensure equality and equality: to ensure freedom of religion; resolve conflict on the ground and restore trust between communities and guarantee peaceful, safe and just coexistence.

The authors of the statement also appealed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ensure a safe environment for Muslims to pray in Adigeni and prevent the recurrence of physical attacks and threats. In addition, ensure the initiation of a timely and effective investigation into the incident and the implementation of the necessary investigative actions.

Among the signatories of the statement are the Center for Social Justice, the Salam Platform, the Solidarity Platform, the Center for Civic Inclusion and Activism and others.

The mayor of Adigeni, Gocha Kimadze, said on the Formula TV channel that parliament member, former head of the Georgian Muslim Union Tariel Nakaidze, who puts forward new proposals and demands, is taking part in the negotiations between the authorities and Yusuf Mikeladze. "He was included in the negotiations on April 5 and gave directives on what questions need to be asked and what needs to be talked about. I think this process needs to be managed," the mayor said.

Representatives of the Muslim community assured that they would gather for Friday prayers on April 12 in the house of Yusuf Mikeladze, while accusing the authorities of beginning repressions against Muslims. “The state has officially legitimized the repressive policy against the Muslim community... We will definitely pray on Friday, and no one will stop us, many other people will be added,” one of the representatives of the Muslim community, who comes to prayer at Mikeladze’s house on Fridays, said on the television channel.

Residents of Adigeni said on air that they are against Muslim meetings in Mikeladze’s house, since there are no local residents among them; they come from other villages to pray. In their opinion, there is no reason for meetings in a private house, since there are mosques and prayer houses in villages inhabited by Muslims.

Adigeni is a regional center located in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. According to the latest census in 2014, 16 thousand 462 people live in it. In the Adigeni region there are Georgian Orthodox churches, there are monasteries and mosques.

I guess some Georgians understand Islam.
