Congressional leaders are now targeting the tax-exempt status of four prestigious universities - Harvard, Cornell, MIT and UPENN - for their failure to handle anti-Semitism on campus

- Representative Jason Smith (R-MS), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, sent a letter to the presidents of Harvard, UPenn, Cornell and MIT about their tax-exempt status on Wednesday
- House Ways and Means Committee began the inquiry after the presidents failed to condemn the genocide of Jews during a congress hearing on anti-Semitism
'As you know, your institutions are aided by the beneficial treatment provided to nonprofit, tax-exempt entities,' Republican Smith wrote to Interim Harvard President Alan Garber, MIT President Sally Kornbluth, Cornell President Martha E. Pollack, and UPenn Interim President Larry Jameson.
'Your universities also receive funding from federal grants and appropriations, support for student loan assistance, lucrative financial benefits from your tax-exempt status, and the advantageous tax treatment of your institutions’ endowments.
'You may also be aware that there are certain standards your institutions must meet to receive this highly advantageous and preferential treatment.'
