Excommunication from the Ranks of the National Resistance Front
Scathing.
[8am] In recent times, a member of the Afghanistan National Resistance® Front (NRF), based in Mashhad and under the leadership of Ahmad Massoud, issued a statement aiming to elucidate the "core tenets" of the said front. However,

this attempt resulted in a perplexing and puzzling declaration, subsequently sparking debates within the digital realm. On his Facebook page, he expressed that only individuals who identify as "Moslems" can be affiliated with the NRF, thereby excluding "non-Moslems." He further clarified that non-Moslems could only be "sympathizers" or "supporters" of the front. These statements have emerged at a juncture where the Taliban

’s ascendancy prevails in Afghanistan, having eradicated any military opposition. It is worth noting that the NRF does not extend recognition to any other political or ethnic factions, thereby obstructing all internal activities within the country.

Several salient observations can be drawn concerning these assertions:

1- Without a doubt, the NRF member’s reference to "non-Moslems" pertains not to Afghanistan’s Hindu or Sikh population, nor does it include the Jews or Christians residing in the country. The context of these proclamations reveals an intent to address groups perceived as secular, weak, and proponents of the separation of religion from politics. In light of this perspective, it is crucial to acknowledge the employment of a takfiri

rhetoric by this individual, which indeed underscores the profound predicament afflicting this front. Such an approach potentially paves the way for the emergence of hazardous scenarios.

Throughout Islamic history, rulers have often labeled dissidents or opposing faiths as atheists, subsequently suppressing and disenfranchising them. We condemn the Taliban’s act of excommunicating adversaries through baseless allegations, deeming them guilty and dispensable. If NRF’s membership criterion remains limited solely to those who identify as "Moslem," it implies that any individual or group dissenting from their views risks expulsion from their fold, mirroring the Taliban’s tactics. This prompts a query: what distinguishes the NRF from the Taliban? By embracing such a stance, the philosophical underpinnings of the NRF come into question. One may naturally ponder why senior members of the Resistance® Front share common ground with the Taliban in their exclusionary approach, disregarding religious pluralism and diversity in interpreting faith. If this characteristic of the Taliban does not perturb NRF members, then it conceivably becomes feasible to resolve other disputes through dialogue and moderation. Consequently, it remains uncertain whether all those aligning themselves with Ahmad Massoud’s Resistance® Front are indeed Moslems; speculation at best. Our capacity to unveil the hidden and peer into people’s hearts, determining genuine faith from feigned allegiance, is non-existent. Thus, it begs the question—why engage in discourse regarding the religious affiliation of Ahmad Massoud’s Resistance® Front members? In the midst of the Taliban’s consolidation of power, these words serve no purpose other than to manifest recklessness and unadulterated complacency.

2- The NRF’s rallying cry is the battle against the Taliban. Eminent leaders of this front contend that they combat "global terrorism," channeling the legacy of Ahmad Shah Massoud, all while championing the safeguarding of democratic principles and values. Their plea to the international community is rooted in the apprehension that the perpetuation of the Taliban regime could transform Afghanistan into a permanent hub for terrorism, rekindling the horrors of September 11, 2001. They implore Western nations to heed their warnings and refrain from engaging with the Taliban. Strikingly, within the political and cultural enclaves of the Resistance® Front situated in Dushanbe and Mashhad, individuals espouse and propagate ideologies akin to the Taliban’s, with some even boasting past affiliations with the Taliban group. In a contemptuous interview, one such individual vehemently asserted that secularism finds no place in Afghanistan, prophesying its futility even in death. The rationale behind targeting secularism and its adherents at this juncture remains unclear. Does Afghanistan’s turmoil emanate from the predominance of secular principles, or is it instead attributable to the dominance of archaic holy mans who permit only their regressive ideologies to flourish? Have the political and cultural protagonists of the Ahmad Massoud Front lost sight of their moral compass, or are they signaling approval to the Taliban, forging an unlikely alliance?

3- Notably, the Ahmad Massoud-led front has been relatively dormant within the country. Contrary to its vociferous proclamations, the front appears to channel its efforts predominantly into disseminating media campaigns rather than tangible initiatives. Acknowledging this reality does not equate to dismantling the resistance front, but rather stems from the imperative for individuals to be informed about the facts and make informed decisions. Regrettably, Afghan leaders have historically exploited public ignorance to manipulate the course of destiny.

An overarching question now plagues our thoughts: in light of the inability to seize control of a remote, lofty Taliban security outpost atop Panjshir’s heights, what significance lies in harboring aspirations of a post-victory era? Instead of uniting the majority of Afghans who stand in opposition to the Taliban, employing divisive

rhetoric merely appears to fuel the very mill of the Taliban. Persisting in activities beyond Afghanistan with an insular, exclusionary, and xenophobic mindset for a millennium would hardly disrupt the water’s calm, nor impede the Taliban’s monopolistic dominance. Regrettably, the Taliban appears fortunate in its adversaries, epitomized by the likes of this member from Mashhad within the NRF.

4- Following the collapse of the republican system on August 15, 2021, Ahmad Massoud sought refuge in Panjshir, rallying under the banner of resisting the Taliban. This endeavor sowed seeds of hope among millions globally and redirected their gaze towards him. However,

subsequent events have transformed these hopeful aspirations into disillusionment. Beside the failure to muster a coherent military force against the Taliban, a pivotal challenge lies in the absence of foreign support for such endeavors—both historically and presently. Moreover, Ahmad Massoud’s efforts in coalition-building faltered, leaving him unable to unite anti-Taliban factions abroad under a singular umbrella.

Ahmad Massoud commanded the requisite popularity and legitimacy to coalesce a coalition of anti-Taliban forces, amplifying the Afghan people’s quest for justice on the global stage. Regrettably, he seems lacking in the tenacity and motivation required for this task, choosing to remain ensconced within self-imposed confines, interacting predominantly with familiar circles or his father’s associates. At times, the NRF’s actions against fellow Taliban opponents suggest a proclivity for sidelining other dissident factions, potentially overshadowing their primary goal of opposing the Taliban.

5- As the Mashhad-based NRF member pens these sentiments, they underline the intention to articulate the "fundamental principles" of the front. This prompts a query: why does the cultural and media apparatus within this front appear ensnared in disarray, such that any member who speaks up seemingly outlines its core tenets? Should there not be a designated entity to whom individuals can turn during such instances, seeking answers with confidence? Does this Mashhad-based member of the NRF assume the mantle of spokesperson for the front, and do their words indeed reflect its official stance? Furthermore, why does the NRF, in question, not take measures to mitigate the disarray within its ranks, appointing official spokespersons to convey its positions?

Regardless, the NRF asserts itself as a counterforce against the Taliban. Executing this assertion necessitates meticulous planning, sagacity, and unwavering patience above all. It stands to reason that regardless of the magnitude of a mission, those aligned with it must approach their actions and rhetoric with circumspection, guided by wisdom. The NRF must tangibly demonstrate a capacity for strategic thinking, focusing on the broader canvas of Afghanistan. It should endorse the principle of maximal inclusivity and minimal exclusion, refraining from ceding authority to vengeful or myopic elements. Hitherto, the NRF’s trajectory illustrates that venturesome individuals have oftentimes shaped events in their desired direction, thereby altering their course.
