Here's where testing has located 'forever chemicals' in fish caught in Wisconsin waters
[Milwaukee Journal Sentinel] MADISON — The state Department of Natural Resources has issued a number of notices over the last several years for anglers to limit their consumption of some fish caught in certain water bodies due to high levels of toxic "forever chemicals."

PFAS — or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a family of man-made chemicals used for their water- and stain-resistant qualities in products like clothing and carpet, nonstick cookware, packaging and firefighting foam.

PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate), one of the most well-researched in the family of compounds, has most often been found in the tissue of fish harvested and tested by the DNR.

The chemicals have been linked to types of kidney and testicular cancers, lower birth weights, harm to immune and reproductive systems, altered hormone regulation and altered thyroid hormones. The chemicals enter the human body largely through drinking water.

The chemicals can also accumulate in the body of people who routinely consume fish caught in waters with high levels of PFAS.

#2 How harmful are PFAS?

PFAS can be toxic to both humans and wildlife. Two of the most studied of the chemicals in this family, PFOA and PFOS have been shown to:

  • Interfere with the hormonal system (so they are called endocrine disruptors)
  • Interfere with the reproductive system and the development of the foetus
  • Impact the immune system and have been linked to reduced responses to vaccines in children
  • Promote the development of certain cancers (e.g. kidney and testicular cancer)

It should be noted that many of the thousands of PFAS currently in use are lacking proper toxicological data.

#3 Modern life means modern problems. There are PCBs in the water. There are PCBs in that grey can on the pole across the street.

We are doing better. Will we ever be perfect.

Not in this life. Not on this world. Bubbi...

Who needs "toxicological data." We've got Pfizer.

#6 Yes. You must be protected from nasty chemicals. So we can kill you with other nasty chemicals...

#10 There are a number of reasons firefighters have a higher rate of cancer than the general population, but pretty sure the foam isn't on the top 10.

Except Carl, who likes doing the hot tub thing with it.

#11 Firefighters? A job where breathing toxic smoke and particulates is normal. Courageous and often Heroic --- the latter term is something I do not use lightly.

#12 Is this another Linear-No Threshold (LNT) Theory paper where one molecule dooms, Dooms! I say!, anyone to a lingering death?

Not that I want to eat stuff like that, but I wonder why the human race did not go extinct millennia ago if the world is so toxic?

#13 Yes. The very first smoke particle that was not the result of a lightning strike, volcanic activity, spontaneous biologic combustion or meteorite crash was the first carcinogenic particle. Even though it occurred before any mammals existed to develop cancer...

#16 Water filters are another oversold thing. They can remove particulates and some chlorides. They can't remove most complex organic molecules.

#18 If you are really worried, distilled water is the best. But if you don't oxygenate it and add minerals, it's nasty. Truly de-ionized water is just bad for you.
