Surprising Things You Can Buy With Food Stamps

[GoBankingRates] Formerly known as food stamps, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the most important anti-hunger initiative in America. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), SNAP provided food security to about 41.5 million people in 2021, with an average benefit of $218.14 per person.

That’s per month, not per year.

Recipients use Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards to receive funds and make purchases, and they can use those cards to buy a whole lot more than just standard groceries. Here’s a look at some of the more unusual things that SNAP will pay for.

#5 That’s absolutely what is done. I don’t know the exchange rate, but EBT is sold at a discounted rate. $50 cash for $100 worth of food stamps for example. At a place I once worked it was party time every month. They would wheel and deal over who would pay the most cash. “I’ll give you 10 for 20. I’ll give you 12 for 20.” Things like that. Look up Bone Thugs n Harmony some ng First of the Month. I think it was Chris Rock who talked about it being a Welfare Carol.

#6 imo: no one in thew U.S. should go hungry but ... when i was a lad (80 yrs ago) tramps would come to our door and my mom would give them food. the govt handed out food not plastic. lets revert to that!
