LAPD used secretive AI surveillance software to spy on general public's social media accounts

[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] - The LAPD used Voyager Labs, a social media monitoring firm that claims it can 'predict crimes' based on users' activity, for a four-month period
- Their software can rapidly amass a suspect's social media posts into a searchable interface and surveil thousands of associated accounts
- The LAPD used the software to scour 500 accounts and thousands of messages for 'real-time tactical intelligence' and to investigate gangs and hate groups
- Voyager says their AI gauges a user's conviction to their ideologies and whether users with extremist views have the 'passion needed to act on their beliefs'
- The department has been scrutinized for its policy of collecting social media info and using social media searches targeted at activists and protesters
- Police precincts in Boston, New York City, Baltimore and Washington D.C. also use third-party software to monitor social media
