Polar bears are inbreeding due to melting sea ice, posing risk to survival of the species, scientists say
[ABCNEWS.GO] The outlook for the survival of polar bears appears precarious as scientists learn more about factors induced by climate change that are affecting the long-term health of the species.

Polar bear populations studied in Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago on the Barents Sea, were found to have up to a 10% loss in genetic diversity over a 20-year period, which correlated with a "rapid disappearance of Arctic sea ice," according to a study published Wednesday in the Royal Society Journals. As the ice melted, the polar bears' habitat became fragmented, resulting in a rapid increase in genetic isolation and inbreeding among regions due to reduced contact with polar bears from the outside, scientists said.
Polar bears with buck teeth and Hapsburg lips? I think I'd pay money to see that!

#8 A growing population will show less "genetic diversity" as there are more siblings and half-siblings.

#9 this can't be, i was told by the same people that keep saying 'trust the science!™ that all the polar bears would be long dead by now if we didn't 'do something!™ and give up more of our rights and more importantly, money, to the government!

#10 Where to start here? Like ungulates can form the idea "You are f*cking your cousin / sister / mom? Ewwwwww..."

See the mouse ears story below.

We are entering the early days of a new dark ages. Should the human race survive it, historians will one day record that it was not ushered in by beer-swilling, [Q]An*n (I type it that way so it doesn't create a target here for gummint snoops) obsessed white male high school drop outs, but by the so-called "scientific communnity."

#11 What's this? We still have Polar Bears?
I thought we were told back in the late 1990's they'd all be dead by 2010.
Unless of course lots of $$$$$$$ was raised for the correct pockets.

Note: Some may remember the article of a man accused of shooting a Poplar Bear about 4 or 5 years back? He was found INNOCENT because on doing a requested Genetic test they found the bear was a grizzly–polar bear. A massive and very aggressive hybrid called a Grolar bear.

So Nature is just adapting and evolving as it has done for a Million years.

#14 This as opposed to the normal amount of inbreeding that occurs in a wild population. Because they're careful to check their geneologies and stuff.

#15  they found the bear was a grizzly–polar bear. A massive and very aggressive hybrid called a Grolar bear.

Some call them pizzlies. Grolar is better. They exist because the expanding polar bear population has spread south into grizzly territory. Polar bears are reportedly a fairly new sub-species of Ursus arctos (brown bears), which includes grizzly bears. That’s why they can interbreed and produce viable offspring.
