But increased temperatures in the Arctic Ocean weaken the vortex and cause it to stretch down to the midlatitudes, which include the US and Europe

Researchers say vortex stretching caused Texas' deadly cold spell in February

They hope their findings dispel misconceptions about how climate change can impact temperatures
