California pig rules could cause bacon to disappear
[FoxBusiness] New rules go into effect next year that require more space for pigs and other animals.

At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.

Remember the 2019 China breakout of African Swine Fever? Its a contagious disease that killed well over several million pigs in China. In fact China is still hurting and importing massive amounts of US PORK which has driven up US Pork related meat cut prices.

NOW,
think about how these Calif. rules, will likely further reduce the number of Pigs to market?

Sprinkle on some reported data from Marketplace.org. In early 2020 the US started shipping 1/3 of its Pork to China. But US Pork supplies were down 40% then and are still well below Pre-2019 numbers. But pork shipments to China have quadrupled during the same time period. So about a third of all U.S. produced pork has been or is being exported to China.

NOTE: US Companies still have extended contracted obligations to China for Pork delivery.

#11 No! Our shares didn't JUST get bigger! Like every other regulatory edict passed in California over the decades, the producers will knuckle under and comply. The costs will then be passed on to the national consumer base as a whole. We've been subsidizing California's insanity for a long time.

Only if the producers want to continue selling into Cali. If the cost of compliance is high enough to take a big bite out of profits and but demand is high elsewhere (China & Rest of World), then I would expect sellers to leave the Cali market.

Considering all of the stupid regulatory crap that has had its origins in California, only to be adopted by the rest of the country; just likely do you think it is that the producers will leave the California market?

#18 When did all the other states adopt auto emission standards of Cali. Always seem to the Cali and everyone else. Now that Cali has outlawed domestic sales of internal combustion engine private vehicles by a given date, I don't see other states rushing to follow their lead.
