[SpaceNews] SpaceX takes aim at satellite mobility operators with Starlink expansion

SpaceX is seeking regulatory permission to connect moving vehicles to its rapidly expanding Starlink constellation, branching the broadband network out of fixed homes and offices.

The company is asking the FCC for authorization similar to the blanket license it already has for up to a million end-user customer Earth stations.

David Goldman, SpaceX’s director of satellite policy, said in a regulatory filing that its Earth Stations in Motion (ESIM) equipment is “electrically identical to its previously authorized consumer user terminals but have mountings that allow them to be installed on vehicles, vessels and aircraft, which are suitable for those environments.”

#1 I so look forward to people streaming movies in their cars while driving. I know they do that now on their phones, but like every tool, it will be in its misuse that it will stand out.

#2 Well, since I've been on Starlink's list for over a year, I'd really appreciate it if they'd keep their promises for our coverage before they start drumming up new business.

#3 You're a conservative Mercutio, you've been passed over. Literally.

#4 It takes about a year from permission to actual operating licenses Mercutio, so all is not lost. Right now, they only have the northern latitudes covered by their constellations to any degree of reliability. As they fill in further south, you will see more and more coverage available. It is simply a matter of getting the birds up and the regional ground stations hooked up. They will not be able to support mobile until after most of their fixed terrestrial is up and running.

I have a decent headwater drop on the property, so my dream of solar+water power along with a battery (tesla maybe?), plus a well and septic, and add this in for low latency high-speed bandwidth... I will finally be able to move out to my land when I retire and be c0ompletely off the physical grid. And it is in Eastern Tenn where people know better than come snooping on land that is not theirs.
