ISIS trials not alternative to international court northern Syria
|
[NPASYRIA] Social Justice Council of North and East Syria member Khaled Ali said that the trial of some ISIS members in northeastern Syria "does not negate the demand for the establishment of an international court in the region."
In an exclusive statement to North Press on Saturday, Ali said that 900 ISIS members of Syrian nationality have been tried since the beginning of this year.
ISIS members of Syrian nationality are being tried in two courts in northeastern Syria, one in Qamishli and the other in Kobani.
These two courts, referred to as Terrorism Court, are directly tied to the Justice Council of North and East Syria, according to Ali.
Ali added that the laws applied in the trial are those included in Decree No. 20 that was issued by the Legislative Council of North and East Syria.
The decree includes penal laws to punish the perpetrators of terror crimes.
Ali indicated that Syrian law is referred to when there is no legal article stipulating a punishment for an offense committed in the above decree.
There are thousands of ISIS fighters in the prisons of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and the prisons contain detainees from more than 60 nationalities, according to the data of the Autonomous Administration.
The SDF calls for the establishment of prisons with good infrastructure that allow better protection for hundreds of ISIS members.
On March 27, the Combined Joint Task Force — Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) of the U.S. — led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS said that it delivered riot gear equipment to local Internal Security Forces in northeastern Syria to confront riots that may occur and protect detention centers in the region.
The Sina’a prison in the city of Hasakah, one of the prisons that contains thousands of ISIS detainees, witnessed several unsuccessful escape attempts and jailbreaks.
