U.S. to execute man despite victims' family and Navajo Nation pleas
  • [Iraq Sun] U.S. Attorney General William Barr on Wednesday directed the Federal Bureau of Prisons to reschedule the execution of Lezmond Mitchell.

  • Mitchell, a Navajo, has been on Death Row following his sentencing after he was convicted of the brutal murders of a Navajo woman and her nine-year-old granddaughter.

  • In October 2001, Mitchell murdered Alyce Slim, a 63-year-old grandmother, and her nine-year-old granddaughter as part of a carjacking in Arizona.

#1 ...ordered the girl "to lay down and die," slit her throat twice, and when she didn't die,...

...possible racial bias.

Dream on, scum bag.

#2 The dead have no representation except that of the state. When the direct victims pleas for mercy, we can listen.

#3 The headline vs. the bullet point have me confused.

Is the victims family asking for the Execution, or Not wanting it?

Because the US-AG rescheduled delayed the execution thus further delaying it?

#4 I agree that the bullet points, are unilluminating, J-Nobody, and the full text of the article at the link is no more so. But a search of the killer’s name lead me to an AZ Central article on the subject, which in forms us that

The Navajo Nation is against the death penalty.

Johnathan Aminoff and Celeste Bacchi, Mitchell's lawyers, said in a statement that the federal government's announcement of a new execution date demonstrates disrespect for the Navajo Nation's values and sovereignty.

"In what the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals referred to as a 'betrayal of a promise made to the Navajo Nation,' the Department of Justice exploited a legal loophole and sought the death penalty against Mr. Mitchell for the federal crime of carjacking over the objection of the Navajo Nation, the victims’ family, and the local United States Attorney’s Office."

The world does like to deplore those barbaric, uncivilized Americans and their fondness for killing, both personally with guns (!!!) and in our death penalty for convicted criminals, which most First World countries have given up.

#5 Navajo Nation is opposed to the death penalty. If the killer and victims are Navajo I personally think their preferences should apply.

#6 ^ As long as they're contained to the Rez and can only interact (or prey on) Navajos, I'd be more agreeable to that

#7 Have the members of the Navajo Nation set up a GoFundMe and donate the cost to pay for his lifetime residence at the nearest Super Max Prison.

Everybody wants something, like clemency for a depraved killer (9 year girl !!), paid for with Other People's Money™. Let them take personal responsibilty.
