Work Continues To Contain Fire On Navy Ship Thought Extinguished Overnight
[ABC News} Defense officials say it's too soon to tell what the ship's future will be.

The U.S. Navy said that at least one fire continues to burn aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard, as progress is being made in extinguishing the fire that has raged in San Diego's harbor since Sunday morning.

A defense official told ABC News that as of Tuesday evening the fire was 80% contained.

Defense officials acknowledged that the fire has caused serious damage aboard the ship and that they face tough decisions about the ship's future, including whether the ship will be able to continue in service.
More at link, including a video.

Video mentioned that there are burn marks on the hull from the fire inside, which pretty much meant the hull is a total loss due to distempering of the hull steel.

#3 It's dead Jim

[Why am I getting the feeling that the Chinese have an edge in at least starting from scratch rather than being stuck with an albatross of an institutional upper rank structure that can't insure basics are done anymore?]

#4 ^ I'm not at all sure the Chinese are better off in terms of command structure. Be that as it may, we can be sure that not one admiral will lose his (or her) job over this catastrophe. In today's USN, the buck stops with Seaman Smith.

#9 ...Ship ‘Salvageable’

Yea, as in the ship just became a salvage ready for the breakers.

#10 /\ "Salvageable" as in it won't do a Admiral Kuznetsov right in the middle of a busy harbor...

#11 They going to dial up an old LHA from the mothball fleet? This sounds like they will need to strike the hull and salvage the ship. WTF is going on in the Navy, loss of basic seamanship abilities, including DC?

#12 Marilyn, the ship had just come out of the yards, and most of the crew were ashore. Of the 160 people aboard, many were probably civilian workers.
