Biden: Gender confirmation surgery is ‘medically necessary'

said sex-change surgery is medically necessary for transgender people while pushing for changes that would require insurers to cover such procedures.
The former vice president and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee made the assertion during a Wednesday virtual event with the Human Rights Campaign. He received a question on how he would ensure gay and transgender people have access to affordable healthcare.

Biden then made a point about surgery for transgender people.
"And make sure insurance companies treat gender confirmation surgery as a medical necessary, which it is," Biden said.
He noted that the Affordable Care Act prevented insurers from charging individuals more based on sexual orientation.
"Trump has been trying to gut these protections since he took office," Biden said. "Anyone involved in patient care, from the board of directors to a receptionist in charge of scheduling, could put their beliefs above your healthcare."
Biden's campaign plan for helping gay and transgender people states that he aims to "ensure coverage for comprehensive care for LGBTQ+ Americans," including by "covering care related to transitioning — including gender confirmation surgery."
The Human Rights Campaign, a leading organization pushing for expanding gay and transgender rights, endorsed Biden on Wednesday, which marked the eight-year anniversary of Biden coming out in support of same-sex marriage before former President Barack Obama
