Coronaplague roundup: 4 in 10 people worldwide confined due to pandemic
Donald Trump Extends Coronavirus Guidelines to April 30
[BREITBART] President Donald Trump
...Perhaps no man has ever had as much fun being president of the US...
on Sunday said that guidelines for Americans fighting the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)

will be extended to April 30.

"Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won, that would be the greatest loss of all," Trump said, acknowledging that his hopeful Easter deadline for loosening restrictions was shattered.

The president said he thought about differentiating restrictions between different areas in the country, depending on the threat posed by the virus, but was strongly advised against it by the experts.

Trump urged Americans to continue following the "Slow the Spread" guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and the federal government.

"The better you do the faster this whole nightmare will end, therefore we will extend our guidelines to April 30 to slow the spread," he said.

Trump said that on Tuesday his task force will share additional updates and data to demonstrate why the sustained guidelines were necessary.

He reminded Americans that they were still making a difference, but warned them that deaths and infections would continue rising for two weeks.

"The peak will likely hit in two weeks," Trump said.

Trump predicted that by June 1, the United States would successfully be getting back to normal.

Italy’s virus cases showing signs of narrowing
[IsraelTimes] The number of coronavirus cases in Italy shows signs of narrowing again, with officials expressing cautious optimism that the most severe shutdown in the industrialized west is showing results. Italy’s civil protection agency says 5,217 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours — the lowest number in four days and an increase of just 5.6% — bringing the total number to 97,689. In that period, another 756 people with the virus died, bringing Italy’s total deaths in the crisis to 10,779.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Expands Quarantine to Louisiana Travelers
[BREITBART] Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is requiring travelers from Louisiana to self-isolate for 14 days and said the Florida Highway Patrol will install checkpoints on major roads to screen travelers from that area, he announced on Friday.

DeSantis is imposing restrictions on travelers fleeing to Florida from Louisiana ‐ particularly New Orleans, which is emerging as one of the hotspots of the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)

outbreak.

"New Orleans is having a lot of problems ‐ they may not be quite as widespread as New York City. There was a concern from the Panhandle that this could impact them," DeSantis said during a presser on Friday.

"They are working hard to keep their rates low and we don’t want to add any problems to them," he added.

The Florida Highway Patrol will install checkpoints on the major roads along the Alabama-Florida state line and screen drivers from Louisiana, with the exception of those driving commercial vehicles.

"There’ll probably be a diversion for folks with certain license plates," DeSantis said.

Others will be required to tell authorities where they are staying in Florida and told to self-isolate for 14 days. A violation of that order could result in criminal penalties.

"All we’re trying to do is keep our residents here safe," DeSantis said. "If they’re telling you to shelter in place, then do that. But don’t come here, because we’re trying to protect our folks."

topped 2,000 on Saturday ‐ just days after reaching the 1,000 mark.

The rising number signaled the rapid spread of the virus, also known as COVID-19, despite extraordinary public health measures in place across the nation that have closed businesses ‐ grinding the economy to a near-halt -- and confined millions to their homes.

Confirmed infections also climbed by nearly 17,000 on Saturday, to a total of more than 121,000 nationwide.

New York state nears 1,000 coronavirus deaths
[IsraelTimes] New York state’s coronavirus death toll is nearing 1,000.

The state accounts for more than 40 percent of coronavirus deaths in the US.

The number of disease-related deaths in the state jumped Sunday to 965 from 728 the day before, Gov. Andrew Cuomo says. The vast majority have been in New York City. Figures released Sunday morning show 678 coronavirus deaths in the city, which continues to be the epicenter of the pandemic in the US.

Meanwhile, new data is showing which parts of the city are being hit the hardest by disease and that nearly a quarter of the people who have died of coronavirus in the state were nursing home residents.

At least 8 strains of the coronavirus are spreading across the globe
[NYPOST] Scientists have identified at least eight strains of coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)

as the bug wreaks havoc spreading across the globe.

More than 2,000 genetic sequences of the virus have been submitted from labs to the open database NextStain, which shows it mutating on maps in realtime, according to the site.

Researchers said the data, which includes samples every continent except Antarctica, revealed the virus is mutating on average every 15 days, National Geographic reported.

But Nextstrain cofounder Trevor Bedford said the mutations are so small that there is no strain of the virus that is more harmful.

"These mutations are completely benign and useful as a puzzle piece to uncover how the virus is spreading," Bedford told the outlet.

He said the various strains allow researchers to see whether community transmission is widespread throughout a region, which can inform whether lockdown measures have been effective.

"We’ll be able to tell how much less transmission we’re seeing and answer the question, ’Can we take our foot off the gas?’" Bedford said.

from the UAE, the Sudanese health minister said on Sunday.

All the patients have been infected with respiratory disease outside the country. Four of the six have been in the UAE.

Sudan, which declared a health emergency last week, had recorded one death from the virus.

The government, according to its front man Faisal Mohammed Saleh, has decided that the curfew will begin at 06.00 pm instead of 08.00 pm.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country the government imposed a curfew as of 24 March from 08.00 pm to 06.00 am.

Also, it decided to close international and domestic airports until 23 April, except for the humanitarian and cargo shipments.

Political and social events or gathering have been banned and schools, universities, and higher institutes have been closed for one month, starting from 14 March.

Israeli emergency service to collect plasma from those who recovered from COVID-19
[IsraelTimes] The Health Ministry has instructed the Mada emergency service to begin collecting plasma from Israelis who have recovered from COVID-19, for experimental antibody treatments for those sick with the virus, the service says in a tweet.

“The FDA has approved a similar procedure in the US this week and the use of plasma from those who recovered in the war against the coronavirus is already being carried out in China,” says Prof. Eilat Shinar, who oversees Israel’s blood banks.

Coronavirus: Netherlands recalls 'defective' masks bought from China
[DW] Hundreds of thousands of masks sent to Dutch hospitals have been recalled after tests showed they failed to protect the face or had defective filters. The Netherlands recently bought 1.3 million masks from China. The masks were delivered to the Netherlands by a Chinese manufacturer on March 21. The Health Ministry said it would conduct extra testing on any future shipments.

China is sending millions of masks and medical supplies to countries across the world to combat the COVID-19 outbreak. Countries that are receiving China's supplies include Serbia, Liberia, France, Philippines, Czech Republic

#2 But Nextstrain cofounder Trevor Bedford said the mutations are so small that there is no strain of the virus that is more harmful.

A random mutation should not lead to improvement in pathogenicity. To get this you need work in a lab.
If anything, cycles of variation/selection should lead to a less violent pathogen (according to DWEMs)

#6 I think Bedford meant that none of the strains was significantly worse than the others. This, even though some countries have much higher fatalities as a percent of cases (which can have many other causes than the strength of the virus)

what he didn't say was whether the therapies currently in use (the quinine based compounds, the Gilead drug, the various other anti virals) work about the same on each of the strains; I think this is probably so but the data is very messy and will take a long time to determine.
