Ex-Florida governor candidate Andrew Gillum was in Miami Beach hotel room where drugs were found
Dodged a Democrat Bullet there, Florida
[Sun-Sentinel] A police report about an apparent drug overdose in a Miami Beach hotel room overnight Thursday says that one of the three men present in the room was former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum ‐ along with three small plastic bags containing suspected crystal meth.

The incident could mark a sudden end to Gillum’s political star ‐ which shone brightly for many Democrats even after he lost the 2018 election for governor.

Shortly after reporters began making inquiries on Friday, Gillum confirmed his presence in the hotel room in a written statement and announced he was going into seclusion. He said he would "appreciate privacy during this time" and said he would spend the next few weeks with his family.

Here is Gillum’s explanation:

"I was in Miami last night for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends. While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines. I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement," Gillum said.

The police report says that officers responded to a room at 1100 West Ave., which is the address of the Mondrian South Beach. Police found fire-rescue staff treating a man for a possible drug overdose.

Police found two other men in the room, including Gillum, described as an "involved other."
Capitolist says the other works as a "male escort"
One of the men told police that when he arrived at the hotel shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, Gillum and the person having the medical issue were "inside the room under the influence of an unknown substance" and that he "observed Mr. Gillum inside the bathroom vomiting."

The police report said that on arriving early Friday morning, officers "attempted to speak to Mr. Gillum. Mr. Gillum was unable to communicate with officers due to his inebriated state."

The report also said that fire-rescue responded a second time to the hotel for a welfare check on Gillum and determined he was in stable condition and his vital signs were normal.

Gillum was not arrested and Miami Beach Police Department spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said via email on Friday that "at this time this incident is not being investigated as a criminal matter."

Gillum, a gifted and charismatic speaker, won a stunning primary victory in 2018 to become the first black major-party nominee for governor in Florida’s history. He was the lone leftist-progressive seeking his party’s nomination, wining with 34% of the vote. Three other moderate-centrists split 62% of the vote.

Gillum went on to lose the November election to Republican Ron DeSantis by 0.4% of the vote. Just 32,463 votes separated the winner from the loser.

Gillum was dogged throughout the 2018 campaign by questions about his ethics from his time as mayor of Tallahassee, including his acceptance of a ticket to the Broadway musical "Hamilton" from someone who turned out to be an undercover FBI agent investigating possible corruption in Tallahassee government, where Gillum is mayor. He also faced questions about his travel to Costa Rica with lobbyists.

Gillum consistently said he hadn't done anything wrong and wasn't the target of an FBI investigation, but DeSantis and President Donald Trump repeatedly cited the ethical cloud to sow doubts about the Democratic nominee. The president called Gillum "a thief."

In 2019, Gillum reached a deal with the state Ethics Commission in which he agreed to pay a $5,000 fine to settle a complaint that he violated civil law by accepting a gift from a lobbyist, and commission agreed to drop other charges.
The Capitolist article adds:
When police arrived, Gillum was found ‘inebriated’ with two males — Aldo Mejias, 56, and Travis Dyson, 30. According to sources close to the incident, Dyson, the man who overdosed, advertises as a male escort on some websites. Mejias’s role is still not clear, but according to some reports, Mejias provided a credit card to Dyson to rent the hotel room at the Mondrian, and is the man who called the police after allegedly observing Dyson collapse.
