War crime verdict against Azhar Thursday
[Dhaka Tribune] The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on war criminal and former Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, in his death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
appeal, on October 31.

The case has been kept at the top of the cause-list of the Appellate Division for Thursday, as seen on Wednesday.

On January 28, 2015, Azharul filed his appeal challenging the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict that sentenced him to death.

Earlier on June 18, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, started hearing arguments on the appeal from both the state and the defense.

However,

the bench completed the hearing and deferred the matter as a Case Awaiting Verdict (CAV) on July 10.

On December 30, 2014, ICT-1 sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami

Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam to death for his war crimes. The tribunal found him guilty in five of the six charges against him.

Azhar, with Jamaat and Chhatra Sangha activists, collaborated with the Pakistain Army and attacked villages in Rangpur on April 17, 1971.

They torched and looted houses and killed over 1,200 Hindus. Another 200 Hindus were held and later killed at an undisclosed location. The incident is said to be the single biggest act of genocide in the war.
