Malta bans Sea-Eye migrant rescue ship from its waters, 2nd diembarks passengers in Lampedusa
[DW] Malta officials have denied German-flagged rescue ship Alan Kurdi access to their territorial waters to prevent it from docking at their ports. The ship, operated by the Sea-Eye charity, has 65 migrants colonists on board.

Maltese armed forces were monitoring the German-flagged rescue ship Alan Kurdi on Sunday, as the vessel was sailing toward the island nation.

"They have no permit to enter Maltese territorial waters," an army front man told Germany's dpa news agency.

The ship, operated by German charity Sea-Eye, has 65 migrants colonists on board. They previously waited near the Italian island of Lampedusa. Two migrant rescue ships recently defied Italian authorities to dock without permission in Lampedusa, angering populist Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

Sea-Eye said Italian police barred their entry, prompting them to set course for Malta.

"The Guardia di Finanza came by in person to deliver Salvini's decree: The port is closed," the NGO said.

After Dutch-flagged Sea-Watch 3 rammed a police boat to enter port in Lampedusa just over a week ago, and Italian-flagged Alex ported without permission on Saturday, Italy's Salvini pledged to raise fines for illegal docking from €50,000 ($56,157) to €1 million.

Migrants disembark in Italy after rescue boat defies ban

[AlAhram] Dozens of shipwrecked migrants colonists disembarked in Italia early Sunday after their rescue boat docked on the island of Lampedusa, the second vessel in a week to defy efforts to stop them by far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

Some 41 people were finally allowed to step off migrant rescue charity Mediterranea's Italian-flagged Alex, which arrived at the port on Saturday in an overnight operation that saw the ship temporarily seized by authorities.

The boat's captain Tommaso Stella is being investigated for allegedly aiding illegal immigration, according to the Italian news agency Agi.

It is the second vessel in just over a week to defy Salvini's attempts to block Italian ports to rescue ships, as tensions increase over the international response to the migration crisis.

A third boat that had also been waiting off Lampedusa, the German charity Sea-Eye's vessel Alan Kurdi carrying 65 migrants colonists, was sailing towards Malta on Sunday, even though it has not received permission to enter Maltese waters.

#1 I don't understand this. Don't the arriving ships need substantial help from the port itself to dock there? If Italy is not going to let these ships in, why are the port officials helping them dock (or do I already know the answer to that...?)
