Kenya questioning the value of Chinese armored vehicles after 7 policemen killed in IED
[TUKO] Kenyans have questioned the quality of the newly acquired armoured police vehicles after one of them was extensively destroyed leaving seven police officers dead.

The Armoured Police Carrier hit an Improvised Explosive Device(IED) at Baure, Lamu East leading to the casualties.

The photos of the armoured vehicle which have emerged online show it was badly damaged by the explosive.

This left many wondering how such a machine could take such impact which it is meant to withstand.

Photos shows a badly ripped APC which lay upside down following the blast with some of its parts strewn on the ground.

Kenya bought at least 30 VN-4 APCs from China in January 2016 at billions of shillings with President Uhuru saying they will be used to fight terror.

#3 The Wikipedia spec:

The armor is welded shut and primarily provides protection from small arms fire and splinters from explosives.

This thing is basically a Jeep with wraparound protection against small arms. The article claims billions of shillings were paid for 30 vehicles. Assuming (conservatively) 1b shillings, at the exchange rate of 100 shillings to a dollar, that's over $300,000 per vehicle. Uncle Sam was paying $500K for actual mine-resistant MRAP's from First World manufacturers. Some Kenyan official's bank account was fattened, especially if the contract value was 2 or 3 billion shillings.

#4 I'm surprised Kenya didn't buy south african armour which I'm pretty sure is specifically designed for African terrain and surviving mines. Not a place to get cheap.

Or did the blokes that made that vehicle pack up and move on when the governments changed?

Ek is nie verbaas is nie (I'm not surprised). It's the costs and incentives, if you get my drift.
