"Something blew up by him inside his city," said Dr. Abdulrahman Baiz Miran, who has specialized in reconstruction surgery. "Doctors in Mosul’s liberated areas had recommended for the victim’s family to send the patient to Erbil for surgery."
Adnan was rushed to Erbil’s PAR Hospital, 12 hours after losing his hand, where his severed limb was re-attached.
Miran said that the surgery was performed successfully, and now "blood is flowing through the hand of the patient."
"Replantation of a hand is a very rare surgery around the world," Miran explained, adding that the man could have lost his hand if the surgery had been delayed for even a few more hours.
"He was told to keep the severed hand in a cold place," Miran detailed.
Adnan will have to go under more surgeries before he can use his left hand, doctors say.
"The patient cannot use his severed hand until six months after the surgery," Dr. Hemin Himdad, Miran’s aide, detailed.
PAR Hospital has performed many rare surgeries.
In 2013, the hospital was first in the Kurdistan Region to perform liver transplant surgery for free.
