#1 One of these days Western public will realize that where never was a country called Ukraine - it was all a PR campaign.

#3 Didn't the Soviets call it a Republic and wrangle a seat at the UN for Ukraine?

#6 The first Ukrainian money, zlatnyks (gold coins) and sriblianyks (silver coins) were produced under Kyiv Prince Volodymyr the Great in the 10th century. There's still a few of them available for collectors.

#7 #3 Exactly. Ukraine (means borderland in Slavic) is a commie invention. Supporteed by Globalists because they're the latest form of leftism.

#6 And then Mongols came and the center of Russian life moved north (most survivors did too). And then Gedeminnus conqueered Kiev, and people what became Ukrainian in 20th century been somebody's subject till 1991. At which point they proceeded to demonstrate why they've been subject all that time.

#8 Didn't the Soviets call it a Republic and wrangle a seat at the UN for Ukraine?

Yes, they did, those clever commie bastards.

It seems the history of Ukraine has been particularly turbulent. Curious, I just went to Encyclopedia Britannica's website to read about it.

Very interesting. Although there were brief periods of independence, most of Ukraine's history has been dominated by a series of alliances with more powerful neighbors or else times when they were outright subjugated. Romans, Byzantines, Poles, Lithuanians, Mongols, Greeks, Tatars and Turks all figured into it. Throughout it all, their history as a Slavic people has been intertwined with Russia, sometimes happily and sometimes not so much.

True independence in modern times had to wait until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Heaven knows they deserved it after what they'd been through in the early 1930s during Stalin's collectivization of Ukrainian farms. Millions of them either starved or froze to death although I don't believe anybody knows exactly how many. Then came Hitler's Wehrmacht. Imagine getting caught between Hitler and Stalin.

Now they're caught between Biden and Putin. Hopefully they'll get off a little easier this time but it's still too early to say.

#9 Even if there wasn't before, there is now, thanks to Grom's hero Putin. And they'll be seeking revenge on Russia for generations to come. Strong work!

#11 #9 "Ukrainians" always hated the Moscovites - it's a form of subling rivalry: Russians build world's biggest empire while Ukrainians were Polish serfs, and had to beg their "Russians Brothers"* to save them from Polish retaliation after Khmelnitsky uprising.
And to add insult to injury, Ukrainians - as individuals - had the same rights as Russians within the empire. Which led to a version of brain drain, Ukraine's best were becoming detested Moscovites for centuries.

In short, Ukrainians will be a lot better off once they are reintigrated into reborn Russian Empire - hopefully Russians will not repeat their past mistakes in tolerating Ukra Nationalism (Slavs who think they're Arians and torch bearers of Western civilization are too dumb to live).

*Russians are Moscovites (damn Moscovites is a tautology), or even ugro-finish-tartar mixture fake Slavs^#, to true Ukrainian patriots unless Poles come calling.
#The sites of the beloved by the "West" Ukrainian Nazis patriots outline Ukraine's mission as defense of Europe from Asiatic Moscovites.

#12 But China just issued a national map that officially incorporates some island Russia claims... and Han Chinese have been reportedly quietly settling in deserted eastern Russian communities for decades, with an eye toward eventually formally moving the border to formalize the situation. So there is some question how realistic plans for a reborn Russian empire can be, if Russia has already been losing control of the periphery.

My father was born in Riga, a Hanseatic League city, in 1919. His mother was a linguist involved in the project to codify the Latvian language, which up until then was considered a mere regional peasant dialect.

This is what Wikipedia has to say about the history of Latvia:

After centuries of Teutonic, Swedish, Polish-Lithuanian, and Russian rule, which was mainly executed by the local Baltic German aristocracy, the independent Republic of Latvia was established on 18 November 1918 when it broke away from the German Empire and declared independence in the aftermath of World War I.[3] However, by the 1930s the country became increasingly autocratic after the coup in 1934 establishing an authoritarian regime under Kārlis Ulmanis.[16] The country's de facto independence was interrupted at the outset of World War II, beginning with Latvia's forcible incorporation into the Soviet Union, followed by the invasion and occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941 and the re-occupation by the Soviets in 1944 to form the Latvian SSR for the next 45 years. As a result of extensive immigration during the Soviet occupation, ethnic Russians became the most prominent minority in the country, now constituting nearly a quarter of the population. The peaceful Singing Revolution started in 1987 and ended with the restoration of de facto independence on 21 August 1991.[17] Since then, Latvia has been a democratic unitary parliamentary republic.

Lithuania:

For millennia the southeastern shores of the Baltic Sea were inhabited by various Baltic tribes. In the 1230s, Lithuanian lands were united by Mindaugas, becoming king and founding the Kingdom of Lithuania on 6 July 1253. In the 14th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the largest country in Europe;[19] present-day Lithuania, Belarus, most of Ukraine, and parts of Poland and Russia were all lands of the Grand Duchy. The Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania were in a de facto personal union from 1386 with the marriage of the Polish queen Hedwig and Lithuania's Grand Duke Jogaila, who was crowned King jure uxoris Władysław II Jagiełło of Poland. The Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania was established by the Union of Lublin in July 1569. The Commonwealth lasted more than two centuries, until neighbouring countries dismantled it in 1772–1795, with the Russian Empire annexing most of Lithuania's territory. As World War I ended, Lithuania's Act of Independence was signed on 16 February 1918, founding the modern Republic of Lithuania. In World War II, Lithuania was occupied first by the Soviet Union and then by Nazi Germany. Towards the end of the war in 1944, when the Germans were retreating, the Soviet Union reoccupied Lithuania. Lithuanian armed resistance to the Soviet occupation lasted until the early 1950s. On 11 March 1990, a year before the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union, Lithuania passed the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania, becoming the first Soviet republic to break away when it proclaimed the restoration of its independence.[20]

Estonia:

The land of what is now modern Estonia has been inhabited by Homo sapiens since at least 9,000 BC. The medieval indigenous population of Estonia was one of the last pagan civilisations in Europe to adopt Christianity following the Papal-sanctioned Livonian Crusade in the 13th century.[8] After centuries of successive rule by the Teutonic Order, Denmark, Sweden, and the Russian Empire, a distinct Estonian national identity began to emerge in the mid-19th century. This culminated in the 24 February 1918 Estonian Declaration of Independence from the then warring Russian and German Empires. Democratic throughout most of the interwar period, Estonia declared neutrality at the outbreak of World War II, but the country was repeatedly contested, invaded and occupied, first by the Soviet Union in 1940, then by Nazi Germany in 1941, and was ultimately reoccupied in 1944 by, and annexed into, the USSR as an administrative subunit (Estonian SSR). Throughout the 1944–1991 Soviet occupation,[9] Estonia's de jure state continuity was preserved by diplomatic representatives and the government-in-exile. Following the bloodless Estonian "Singing Revolution" of 1988–1990, the nation's de facto independence from the Soviet Union was restored on 20 August 1991.
