Exactly. Probe and psychological warfare against the troops in Crimea. They are getting hit nearly every day by strikes and drones and now there are Ukrainian boots on the ground probing defenses.

Maybe, part of the job. But with them taking videos of putting a Ukrainian flag up during the op I bet the rumors of demise are greatly exaggerated. Especially by the Russians who lost pride.

A news report showed Ukrainian soldiers extinguishing headlamps they were wearing, being chased away by a civilian in his underwear, holding a Saiga AK.

#12 The main idea in infantry probes is to draw fire, finding out where the enemy firing points are and what is being fired.

Always high risk, especially over water. Infantry probes carry with them a defensive artillery fire mission to cover pursuit forces as the probe withdraws, defensive artillery fire planned well in advance, as in "Reach this point if you won't want to get hit by our artillery."

#13 Slavic armies use ordinary soldiers for missions such as these, not the six million dollar each trained special forces. Likely the real Ukrainian special forces could be nearby, but observing silently.

Commanders take selections from the ranks, then execute the mission. That is why in the Russian reports ya'll don't read, so many of these groups suffer high casualties.

I read where the propaganda released by the Russians was quite the mashup to inflate his heroism. Can't find the link at the moment. Really, do you think a group of well armed SOF are going to be "chased away by a civilian in his underwear, holding a Saiga AK.".
