#4 Could be strategic - restore fear of nuclear power alternatives and thus increase energy dependence of your enemies on your fossil fuel? (Assumes there was no intention of causing nuclear catastrophe and was competence to avoid doing so.)

#5 From the Times of Israel liveblog, as of 12 minutes ago:

Russian troops take control of Ukrainian nuclear plant, authorities say

Ukrainian authorities say a fire at Europe’s biggest nuclear plant ignited by Russian shelling has been extinguished, with Russian forces taking control of the site.

The regional military administration says in a statement that Russian forces took control of the Zaporizhzhia plant in Enerhodar and that operational personnel are ensuring its safe operation.

The administration says the fire at the site was extinguished, and that there is damage to the compartment of reactor No. 1 but it does not affect the safety of the power unit.

Emergency services say there are no casualties.

Ukranian official: "You bastards! Have you no sense? Firing on a... are you listening to me?!"

Russkie officer: "Move aside. We do this everyday.
[PFSHSHHHT!] There. It's out. Gather your things."

#7 Don't we ALL feel so warm and fuzzy now that Russia, the Chernobyl experts, are in control?

BTW: Their Live video feed is down now also.

#8 Among the excuses offered by Putinites: they were only burning the administration building (you know, where maintenance records are kept), and the Ukrainians were at fault because they had troops there to defend it and didn't open fire until Russian troops showed up.

#9 Russia's bogged down!! (Kherson, Mariupol fall, Odessa next, land bridge to Crimea nearly complete)

Russia's going to unleash radiation 10x greater than Chernobyl!!! (facility back to normal and under full operational control)

Russia has united the world against her!!!!! (every one of the non-'R' BRICS nations - 3B population - plus another 2 billion people across the global south refuse to join US sanctions and will keep trading with Russia)

These buffoons are worse than Baghdad Bob. Not as bad as Copperhead Jen, but getting there

#10 ...will keep trading with Russia

They could trade with the former Soviet Union too. How'd that work out?

#11 It is a power plant. You are supposed to blow them up in a war. Or at least disable them without making too big a mess.

Yeah, with a bomb. Don't want to do it by hand. Electricity is dangerous!

#14 Just chop the high tension wires and it is not producing power for the Ukrainians -- is that too complicated?

#15 Depends on the end goals. Blowing it all to hell means no power for a very long time and that pisses people off, and then they get stuff like grandma freezing in the dark, hospitals not operating, the electric locks stuck closed at the puppy orphanage. Your guys don't have to dink around and feed generators, sleeping in structures includes heat and light without extra effort.

Sacramento Doctrine says you can assert control by being able to turn the power off and on according to conditions met. Partisan action - power off. 2 days (whatever) of no partisan action, power back on.

#17 Transmission Towers and transformer farms are the way to disable any generation facility for months with simple kinetic devices, albeit big ones! Air delivery preferred but not required. Towers are easy to replace, but the world supply of replacement transformers is tiny, and mostly in South Korea in days gone by.

#20 It's the big substation and generating station ones that take a really l o n g lead time to make.

Current lead-time - 2-3 years for the big outdoor oil-filled fan-cooled ones (because of 'c*vid', 'gerbil worming', 'trucker strikes' and the ever popular 'supply chain issues' doncha know).

#23 It's simple. Don't do what the Russians want and they turn the power off. Cooperate and the power stays on.

#24 According to NPR earlier today, the Russians have control of the power plant. The fire was an administrative building. The Ukrainian employees are still operating the plant.

Later, the story changed to outrage that the Rooskis would attack a nuke plant and endanger all mankind.
