#1 Ironically, China could easily resolve this situation in such a way that China would win big almost across the board, and at low risk.

First the hard part. With a little calming prior notification to the South and the US, send the Chinese army into the North, remove the idiot leaders, and cart off all the nuclear stuff. Then install a very loyal puppet regime.

The new regime should be sweetness and light, strongly downgrading the military, while distributing vast amounts of international aid to every corner of the country. A year long feast. Encourage Koreans living in China to return home to enjoy the bounty.

Spend that time converting the North's agriculture so that it actually produces food, again sponsored by the international community, so little cost to China.

Even go so far as to sponsor *extended* peace talks with the South, not with any eye to reunification "yet", but just to end the war. This would make China the South's "best buddy"--at a comfortable distance.

This even gives the US an opportunity to pull back all the way to Pusan naval base, and the US Navy could comfortably back off from the Chinese economic zone waters somewhat, easing pressure there as well.

Economically, China would be raking in big bucks, since much of the aid heading to the North would go to Chinese businesses to pay for the rebuild. Eventually, the North would go for a Chinese model industrial rebuild as well.

China keeps its cultural buffer, gets rid of huge numbers of illegal aliens, makes a ton of money, defuses war near its border, migrates the US out the the area somewhat, and gets accolades as an international good guy. What's not to like?

#2 What's not to like? China loses a way to needle the US at little expense to itself. Kimmie and lil' Kim are tools. You don't throw away a perfectly good tool especially when you think you might just need it again in the future for a particular job.

#3 Oh God, not Chinasmack. They specialize in inflammatory opinions and cherry-picked commentary.

#4 The downside of a Chinese takeover of NKor

1. Probably the PRC sees NKor as a permanent (or at least long term) welfare sink (I'm pretty sure SKor thinks this also).

2. Biz in China might start up some ops in NKor but that might hurt other chinese biz and those latter have govt investors.

3. There will be a high cost of dismantling, stabilizing, etc. the hazmat, nuke, etc mess that NKor has made.

4. Numerous NGOs will be annoying the PRC wanting 'in' on the rebuilding of NK.

5. Japanese and some other politicos will have a great 'see the PRC imperialism' talking point.

6. The military PRC high command simply don't like Koreans and don't want to commit their forces to work closely with them.

#5 China will not invade NK because they can't afford 20 mil refugees.

#6 Actually, reading ChinaSmack was kind of alarming. It seems like there is a sizable portion of the Chinese population who believes that, on the whole, Koreans killing each other and maybe nuking Japan a little is in their best interests.

#8 Indeed #7: China seems to have it's own "ruble don't cause no trouble" faction. Or perhaps "ruble don't compete on the world economic stage" faction.

#9 Rubble or Rubble-to-be can't trade with or invest in China.

And definately Rubble-designate-to-be shouldn't be doing so.

This should be a warning to both us and South Korea.

#10 Like I said, Chinasmack has a bad reputation for only translating inflammatory stories. I wouldn't really take anything they say seriously, because they'll never print moderate opinions.

#11 Ironically, China could easily resolve this situation

Indeed. If China wanted the situation to be any different, they would have already made it so.

#12 KCNA QUOTE = "GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN VERBAL WARNINGS ARE SERVED ONLY".

Oh yeah, MORE "2012" + "TESTING THE BAMMER".

History indicates that RISING CHINA will likely suffer some form(s) of serious NATIONAL, ECON DAMAGE iff it engages in any MIL CONFLICT AGZ A MAJOR POWER, i.e. US + JAPAN + RUSSIA, etc. REGARDLESS ITT IT WINS OR LOSES OR STALEMATE.

1950-53 KOREAN STALEMATE + ARMISTICE > Among other reasons, despite its successful rollback of US,UN ground forces towards the original DMZ, CHINA + CPV/PVF > was losing TOO MANY CHIN SOLDIERS + CADRES IN COMBAT AGZ THE US = UN COMMAND SO AS TO THREATEN THE NEW COMMIE TAKEOVER OF MAINLAND CHINA FROM CHIANG KAI-SHEK + HIS KMT.

And MAO + GENERALS also knew that, wid America being superior in numbers of atomic bombs vee USSR, RUSS-CENTRIC COMRADE STALIN WAS COVERTLY IN NO HURRY TO MIL RESCUE HIS CHINESE COMPETITOR FROM THE US + UN COMMAND DESPITE THEIR COMMON COMMUNISM.

VARIOUS BLOGGERS/NETTERS > STARVING NORH KOREA HAS LITTLE OR NOTHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO [as per DPRK "MANIFEST DESTINY"] SAVE

* BEING DESTROYED BY CHINA TO SAVE CHINA.
* BEING FORCIBLY UNILATERALLY TAKEN OVER BY CHINA IN A MAJOR WAR.
* SLOWLY BEING ECONOMICALLY, LATER ETHNICALLY/DEMOGRAPHICALLY + POLITICALLY, TAKEN OVER BY CHINA + CHINESE [Year 2050?] THANX TO FREE TRADE + DESIRE FOR DPRK-SPECIFIC NATIONAL MODERNIZATIN.

Chin-built/financed, Chin-controlled FREEPORTS [EEZS-SEZS]inside the DPRK.

IOW, KIMMIE + NOKOR > "D *** NG IT, DA TIME IS NOW", IFF NORTH KOREA HOPE TO SAVE "NORTH-KOREA-FOR-NORTH-KOREANS/KOREANS".

To paraph a Relation, D *** NG IT, AMERICA = AMERIKA, COMMIES = LIMITED FASCISTS, ETC. "MARRIAGE" > "ONE SIDE IS ALWAYS RIGHT, + THE OTHER SIDE IS THE HUSBAND"!

Correct???
