#1 Ironically, China could easily resolve this situation in such a way that China would win big almost across the board, and at low risk.

First the hard part. With a little calming prior notification to the South and the US, send the Chinese army into the North, remove the idiot leaders, and cart off all the nuclear stuff. Then install a very loyal puppet regime.

The new regime should be sweetness and light, strongly downgrading the military, while distributing vast amounts of international aid to every corner of the country. A year long feast. Encourage Koreans living in China to return home to enjoy the bounty.

Spend that time converting the North's agriculture so that it actually produces food, again sponsored by the international community, so little cost to China.

Even go so far as to sponsor *extended* peace talks with the South, not with any eye to reunification "yet", but just to end the war. This would make China the South's "best buddy"--at a comfortable distance.

This even gives the US an opportunity to pull back all the way to Pusan naval base, and the US Navy could comfortably back off from the Chinese economic zone waters somewhat, easing pressure there as well.

Economically, China would be raking in big bucks, since much of the aid heading to the North would go to Chinese businesses to pay for the rebuild. Eventually, the North would go for a Chinese model industrial rebuild as well.

China keeps its cultural buffer, gets rid of huge numbers of illegal aliens, makes a ton of money, defuses war near its border, migrates the US out the the area somewhat, and gets accolades as an international good guy. What's not to like?

#2 What's not to like? China loses a way to needle the US at little expense to itself. Kimmie and lil' Kim are tools. You don't throw away a perfectly good tool especially when you think you might just need it again in the future for a particular job.

#4 The downside of a Chinese takeover of NKor

1. Probably the PRC sees NKor as a permanent (or at least long term) welfare sink (I'm pretty sure SKor thinks this also).

2. Biz in China might start up some ops in NKor but that might hurt other chinese biz and those latter have govt investors.

3. There will be a high cost of dismantling, stabilizing, etc. the hazmat, nuke, etc mess that NKor has made.

4. Numerous NGOs will be annoying the PRC wanting 'in' on the rebuilding of NK.

5. Japanese and some other politicos will have a great 'see the PRC imperialism' talking point.

6. The military PRC high command simply don't like Koreans and don't want to commit their forces to work closely with them.

#6 Actually, reading ChinaSmack was kind of alarming. It seems like there is a sizable portion of the Chinese population who believes that, on the whole, Koreans killing each other and maybe nuking Japan a little is in their best interests.
