#3 Villepin is suspected of ~~being a man~~using intelligence services to try to dig up dirt on Sarkozy three years before the presidential election, which his arch-rival won earlier this year. Villepin denies any wrongdoing.

Those two statements don't necessarily conflict. To their minds, anything they do to keep power is just fine.
