#1 Even my synagogue, in a pretty suburb of Cincinnati, started hiring armed, off-duty police to stand guard inside and outside the building during services and Hebrew school hours after 9/11 in addition to those hired to direct traffic during the High Holidays. The cost is not trivial.

For anyone that questions Jews for not condemning Israel I would recommend you to read Alan Dershowitz on the subject.
