Baghdad (IraqiNews) In Iraq, as the government struggles to tighten its control on arms possession following the overthrow of Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... snuffies and limit it to official troops, weapons are selling online, with dealers offering home deliveries.
According to Iraqi website SNG, arms traders are openly marketing their multi-source merchandise through specialized social network pages.
Contrary to the tradition in pre-2003 Iraq, when arms purchases were conducted through mediators, with the then iron-fisted state usually foiling the transaction, arms are now on higher demand, with technology including more development in the trade that delivery service is now offered.
SNG quoted one dealer, a 27-year-old to which it referred with initials (M. D.), saying that deals are made through specialized facebook pages as well as private online chats. "The price of a certain piece, make it a pistol or an automatic gun, is negotiated through social networks, then delivery is carried out [from dealer to customer].
Another dealer says "transactions are sometimes made through mediators, and the meetup happens at secret spots away from the public...there are secret agreements between dealers and members of political parties to facilitate he trade, tapping into the influence and weight those parties enjoy on the Iraqi streets". He adds that, "in the past period, the trade was highly difficult and risky, but now became simpler, with a delivery service included per request".
Tarek Harb, an Iraqi legal expert, told the website that arms trade is criminalized disregarding the medium, and penalties could mount to death sentence if the purchase was linked to terrorist action. For light unlicensed weapons, penalties range from 3 to 5 years in prison as well as fining.
But Hayan al-Khayyat, another expert, told SNG that the law provides for "imprisonment" for whoever deals in weapons parts or whole weapons smuggling, trade or manufacture without an official license. He says that such a term means that the penalty could range from 5 to 15 years in prison.

[Pirates Cove] There’s a notion in politics that the process is the punishment. Such as the Russia Russia Russia probe, for which there has been zero evidence of actual collusion, just unrelated process crimes. In this case, Kavanaugh was accused of being mean 36 years ago or so, since Dr. Ford is rather short on details, the Democrats immediately jump in....well, immediately being when Diane Feinstein mentions the letter at a conveniently political time almost two months after receiving it....with "we believe her!!!" and the compliant media followed right along with the allegations, attempting to slur Kavanaugh’s name. Kavanaugh himself said he wants the process to be fair, rather than guilt by accusation (Democrats should remember the old saying about what comes around goes around)
A lawyer for Christina Blasey Ford‐the woman accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault‐raised concerns on Monday about the setup for a public hearing where Ford will testify later this week.
Michael R. Bromwich, a lawyer for Ford, said in a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, that the plan for Thursday’s public hearing "does not appear designed to provide Dr. Blasey Ford with fair and respectful treatment."
The letter casts some doubt on the deal Ford’s team made with Senate Judiciary leaders to appear at a hearing on Thursday.
Bromwich in the letter pointed to the hiring of "an unnamed ’experienced sex crimes prosecutor,'" warning it could help turn the Judiciary Committee hearing into a "circus."
"[It] is contrary to the Majority’s repeated emphasis on the need for the Senate and this Committee’s members to fulfill their constitutional obligations. It is also inconsistent with your stated wish to avoid a "circus," as well as Dr. Blasey Ford’s repeated requests through counsel that senators conduct the questioning," Bromwich wrote.
"This is not a criminal trial for which the involvement of an experienced sex crimes prosecutor would be appropriate. Neither Dr. Blasey Ford nor Judge Kavanaugh is on trial. The goal should be to develop the relevant facts, not try a case," he continued.
This is a cute reasoning that is a stage setter for her pulling out of testifying on Thursday, which would be on the record. At this point, she is the only one who hasn’t given a sworn statement, either written or oral. The burden of evidence lies with Dr. Ford.

She's now sending what I think are non-oath 'statements' by her hubby and some friends she told in 2013....which if I was a judge, I'd burn in the court saying "Yeah, people you told 30+ years later don't count compared to every person you named as there saying it never happened."

The attorneys in the Ford and Deborah Ramirez debacle ought to be considered for disbarment. The Dems who created this shit show should also suffer some punishment. Civil suits should be brought for defamation.

Avenatti has released sworn testimony of his client.
"I also witnessed efforts by Mark Judge, Brett Kavanaugh and others to cause girls to become inebriated and disoriented so they could then be "gang raped" in a side room or bedroom by a "train" of numerous boys. I have a firm recollection of seeing boys lined up outside rooms at many of these parties waiting for their turn" with a girl inside the room. These boys included Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh.
In approximately 1982, I became the victim of one of these "gang" or "train" rapes where Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh were present. Shortly after the incident, I shared what had transpired with at least two other people. During the incident, I was incapacitated without my consent and unable to fight off the boys raping me. I believe I was drugged using Quaaludes or something similar placed in what I was drinking. "

So she went so SEVERAL parties where she saw women getting "gang raped" and she didn't report this to police?

on the other hand, Brett Kavanaugh did apparently take a girl named Suzanne to Grease 2 in 1982 (he called it Grease II in his calendar notes to disguise this awful display of bad judgement). It also seems he asked her out 8 days before the movie which implies he must have coerced her because no girl, on her own volition would have willingly seen such a bomb

Ya know, even Avenetti wants to postpone the confirmation until yada yada yada. No one has asked he not be confirmed, disbarred, or drawn and quartered for such disreputable behavior.
Obviously, the accusers know none of this will stand the test of time, and delay is all they want.

Ms. Swetnick said she attended more than 10 house parties in the Washington area between 1981 and 1983 with Judge Kavanaugh and Mr. Judge, where she watched them “drink excessively and engage in highly inappropriate conduct, including being overly aggressive with girls” and grabbing them “without their consent.”
She's two years older than him, was in college, but repeatedly attending parties with spiked drinks and rape trains, but didn't tell the cops or anyone else? Teh Crazee is strong with this liar

Here's the thing, if they had brought all this forward immediately, I'd say sure, investigate for a bit. The way they did it though, no. It screams hoax, just like all the nooses, KKK stuff that turns out to be done by blacks, or muslims burning down their own mosques...Not buying it. Just like 'found' ballot boxes, this behavior should start an immediate and complete probing of the people bringing it forward.

I have been told that Maryland has no statute of limitations for sex crimes, and I'd think gang rape is one. So has this been brought to the attention of Maryland police? If those gang rapes happened so often at parties there should be plenty of witnesses.
Just why would the third accuser do this. Perjury would land her in jail for quite a while, she'd lose her job, and if this is not a case for a defamation lawsuit, I don't know what is.
Again, this is crazy.

The allegations have cost Kavenaugh a lot (18%) of support among Republican women. Republican Senators will have a hard time winning re-election without their support, so I expect they will try to avoid having to vote to confirm Kavenaugh. Similar position with the conservative base if they vote to deny. Logical response is to defer action.

The allegations have cost Kavenaugh a lot (18%) of support among Republican women.
But how many male votes support for Kavanaugh is worth? How many men out there thinking to themselves "If they can derail somebody like Kavanaugh with such attacks, what chance will my kid have if some co-ed bitch in his college decides to screw with him?"?
#26
Here's a question. The moment Ford was identified, why wasn't the FBI sent out to take her statement? That's exactly what she asked for, an FBI investigation, which always starts by taking a statement from the witness. Plus, lying to the FBI is a crime. Seems to me this all could have ended even before it started.
#29
TW, IMO, that thought - let alone the idea that somebody will ask, never occurred to her. After all, they live in a world where accusations of this type are never questioned.

On NPR just now: Ms. Swetnick has a job that requires a security clearance. So if it becomes clear she has perjured herself, she could lose her job.

Perjury means jail time? For republicans and conservatives it does, but not for Democrats and their minions. Just look at Valerie Plame and Libby. One skated and was a Demo Hero, the other did prison time.

[WarZone] It seems more plausible that a foreign operative or an operative working on a foreign government's behalf might have been able to install an antenna/sensor apparatus onto the top of a structure that is part of the facility and within line-of-sight of the valley below without anyone noticing. This could allow them to persistently gather electronic intelligence on whatever might be happening on, around, and over White Sands and at Holloman. With the capabilities of modern electronics and batteries, it's possible that such a system wouldn't even need to be hard wired.
For instance, check out this 360 photo of a publically accessible viewpoint and weather station adjacent to the main solar telescope tower up at Sacremento Peak. The small building is covered with antennas and electronics which have a perfectly clear line of sight to the valley below. Clandestinely placing a sensor package here that is able to collect certain emissions while blending in with the clutter seems like a relatively rudimentary task‐hiding in plain sight if you will.
This is just one area of a fairly large complex of observatories and other buildings, many of which are in disuse, but which may already be adorned with antennas and other electronics and have an unobstructed line-of-sight towards White Sands. Otero County Sheriff House's comment in which he states there were officials and workmen inspecting towers and antennas could indicate that there were looking for just such a device.

[NEO] The answer might seem obvious, but I think it’s more complicated than most people might think.
Let’s leave out accusers who are telling the truth. I’m interested in the ones who are not. They can have multiple motives, too. This list is not all-inclusive, but here are the major ones:
(1) Revenge. The person actually has hurt you in some way‐estranged spouses are notorious for this motivation‐but you’re making up a story with an accusation that can hurt them even more than the truth would, and you justify it by telling yourself they deserve it.
(2) You’re a sociopath who enjoys lying and gets off on seeing people squirm. Makes you feel superior to all those stupid normals.
(3) Someone has paid you money to lie. Additional potential motives follow:

According to a military source in Sweida city, the Syrian Arab Army was able to make some progress near the Qasr Sheikh Hussein area; however, the Islamic State launched a swift counter-assault to reclaim the territories they lost.
The Islamic State is now working to retake the water source they lost to the Syrian Arab Army last week.
This could be the Islamic State’s last major assault, as the absence of a water supply is likely bearing down on their fighters in this vast volcanic region in Syria’s southern countryside.

[WND] Planned Parenthood convinced a hotel in Austin, Texas, to cancel a screening of a new movie about convicted abortionist Kermit Gosnell, according to the film’s producers.
The movie, "Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer," which opens in theaters Oct. 12, was to be screened Saturday night in the Hyatt Hotel in the Texas capital at the same time Planned Parenthood hosts a $400 a plate gala dinner headlined by Cecille Richards, the organization’s former CEO.
The movie’s producers, however, were told Monday by the hotel the screen was canceled for "security reasons."
The producers told WND they paid the deposit and signed the contract to reserve the space for the screening.
"Everything that was required by the Hyatt was provided and completed as required," a spokesman said.
[Breitbart] As the UK readies to depart the European Union (EU), figures show its exports to Israel soared by 75 percent in the first six months of 2018, a trend official figures show will continue climbing into 2019.
According to the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (ICBS), exports from the UK to Israel (excluding diamonds) totalled $3.45 billion between January and June 2018, up from $1.97 billion in the first half of 2017. In June alone, UK exports to Israel jumped from $335.7 million in 2017 to $606.2 million this year.
Mineral products, machinery and electrical equipment and products of the chemical industry led the way. This continues a trend that has grown steadily from a base of $3.66 billion in 2016 to $4.30 billion in 2017 and will provide a template for other bilateral trade relationships after the Brexit process is completed.
Two-way trade between the UK and Israel has grown by eight percent in the first half of 2018 ‐ from $4 billion in 2017 to $4.33 billion in 2018. This is on top record levels achieved in the last two years: $9.1 billion in 2017 and $7.2 billion in 2016, according to the ICBS.
British PM Theresa May highlighted the importance of UK-Israel trade during a speech in London last month, when she applauded the strength of the relationship binding the countries together.
I'm thankful that increasing attention is being paid to the dire state of higher education in our country. Heather Mac Donald, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute, has just published "The Diversity Delusion." Its subtitle captures much of the book's content: "How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture." Part of the gender pandering at our universities is seen in the effort to satisfy the diversity-obsessed National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, each of which gives millions of dollars of grant money to universities. If universities don't make an effort to diversify their science, technology, engineering and math (known as STEM) programs, they risk losing millions in grant money.
A UCLA scientist says, "All across the country the big question now in STEM is: how can we promote more women and minorities by 'changing' (i.e., lowering) the requirements we had previously set for graduate level study?" Mac Donald says, "Mathematical problem-solving is being deemphasized in favor of more qualitative group projects; the pace of undergraduate physics education is being slowed down so that no one gets left behind." Except for people who actually, you know, have talent for this sort of thing

[Breitbart] Fonda has expressed mixed feelings about her infamous trip to Vietnam in 1972. Last year, she told BBC, "I don’t regret going to Vietnam."
"We were bombing, and it wasn’t being talked about," she also said. "And I thought, ’I’m a celebrity. Maybe if I go, and I bring back evidence’ And it did stop two months after I got back, so I’m proud that I went. It changed my life all for the good,"
However, she did say, "The thing that I regret is that on my last day there, I made the mistake of going to a ceremony at an anti-aircraft gun. It wasn’t being used. There were no airplanes or anything like that. There was a ceremony. I was asked to sing and people were laughing and so forth and I was led, and I sat down. And then I got up and as I walked away, I realized, ’Oh my gosh. It’s going to look like I am against my own country’s soldiers and siding with the enemy,’ which is the last thing in the world that was true."
This July, she commented on the photo again, saying, "I am proud I went to Vietnam when I did. I am so sorry that I was thoughtless enough to sit down on that gun at that time and the message that that sends to the guys who were there and their families."

[AlMasdar] 2018-09-24 — A high ranking Al-Qaeda linked military commander was recently assassinated in the southern countryside of the Idlib Governorate, opposition activists reported via social media on Sunday.
According to reports, the military commander of Tanzim Hurras Al-Deen, ‘Saiyaf’, was assassinated near the town of Kansafra on Sunday after unknown assailants opened fire on his vehicle.
Tanzim Hurras Al-Deen is a radical jihadist group that is currently fighting the Syrian government forces in the northwestern region of Syria.
Since the recent Russian-Turkish agreement on the fate of Idlib, the assassinations of rebel commanders in the province have resumed.
In the past week, at least two high ranking jihadist commanders have been killed by unknown assailants in the Idlib Governorate.
While no group has officially claimed responsibility for these assassinations, opposition activists have taken to social media to accuse Syrian government spies of carrying out these attacks.
A[AlMasdar] (2:50 P.M.) – A top-level military commander for the Syrian al-Qaeda offshoot was mysteriously killed in southern Idlib.
Abu Talhat al-Iraqi, an Iraqi national, was assassinated when unidentified assailants opened fire at his vehicle somewhere in al-Der al-Sharqi village.

[AlMasdar] (3:40 P.M.) – Scores of families passed through the Abu Duhur crossing to their homes in east Idlib countryside just one day after the Syrian government re-opened the humanitarian corridor.
The civilians came out of rebel-held areas toward the territories controlled by the Syrian government in the eastern countryside of Idlib.
The Syrian authorities provided the families with humanitarian aid and basic needs; allowing them to resettle in their farms and resume their agriculture activities.
[AlMasdar] (12:45 A.M.) – Several European states have delivered materials to produce chemical weapons to the Syrian province of Idlib recently, the Director of the Department for Arms Non-Proliferation and Control at the Russian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Yermakov said on Tuesday.
“Many things may disclose in Idlib now. Deliveries of components of chemical weapons from European states were carried out there. It all will re-emerge again soon,” Yermakov said, as quoted by Tass News Agency.
Yermakov did not specify which European states he was referencing; however, his comments remain in line with the Russian Foreign Ministry’s stance on the delivery of chemical weapons to the Idlib Governorate.
Recently, the Russian and Turkish presidents agreed to establish a 10-15km demilitarized zone inside the Idlib Governorate.
Since this Putin-Erdogan agreement was announced, the hostilities in the Idlib Governorate have dissipated, despite the rejection of this demilitarized zone by the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party.
[AlMasdar] (3:30 A.M.) – At least 400 members of the Islamic State (ISIS) members were transferred from the border-city of Albukamal to the Idlib province in northwest Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights alleged on Tuesday.
According to the SOHR report, the 400 ISIS fighters may have been transferred as part of an exchange with the Syrian government for the release of the Druze civilians that were taken hostage by the terrorist group in August.
The SOHR said that the deal was made on Saturday and that the Islamic State members were transferred to a part of Idlib under the control of “jihadist elements.”
The Syrian government has not commented on this claim nor has any source in Sweida mentioned this deal.
Since the Islamic State kidnapped dozens of civilians from the Sweida Governorate in July, the Syrian government has been negotiating the release of the people currently held captive by the terrorist group.
It is believed that the Islamic State has managed to move the civilians from the Al-Safa volcanic region to the Deir Ezzor Governorate, where they are currently being held captive in an undisclosed area.
[AlMasdar] The U.S. forces will be remaining in Syria to train locals after the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS), U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on Monday.
"Once we get those patrols going along the line of contact and we take out the rest of the caliphate, our goal would be to set up local security elements that prevent the return of [ISIS] while at the same time diplomatically supporting... the Geneva process," Mattis said on Monday.
Mattis’ comments came just hours after the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that they will be supplying Syria with the S-300 missile defense system.
The Secretary of Defense has also stated on several occasions in the past that the U.S. will remain in Syria after the defeat of the Islamic State.
However, corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds... Mattis’ reasons for remaining in Syria after the defeat of the Islamic State were to curb the Iranian presence inside the country.

...Once it started looking like Ford’s incredible (as in "not credible") accusation was losing traction another one comes out, this one even more outlandish and less credible. More stalling.
So, what’s next? What are they going to accuse Brett Kavanaugh of next?
I have some suggestions:
Brett Kavanaugh violently suppressed the Spartacus slave revolts (just ask Corey Booker since he claims to be Spartacus).
Brett Kavanaugh was the shooter on the grassy knoll.
Brett Kavanaugh shot the sheriff (investigate his claim that he did not shoot the deputy).
Brett Kavanaugh kidnapped the Lindbergh baby.
Brett Kavanaugh was the kidnapped Lindbergh baby.
Brett Kavanaugh betrayed West Point and framed Arnold for it.
Brett Kavanaugh opened fire on Fort Sumter.
Brett Kavanaugh caused the Apollo 13 fire.
Brett Kavanaugh rejected an Austrian artist’s application to art school.
Brett Kavanaugh started the Chicago Fire
Come on Dems. I came up with these off the top of my head. I’m sure you can be much more creative. Let’s see what you’ve got.
[AlMasdar] Up to 100 white Helmet members and their families were granted asylum in the UK after mass evacuation from Syria.
According to media reports, the first family has already been resettled in the UK with the rest are expected to arrive early next month.
In July, some 100 members of the controversial rescue organization ‐ along with family members ‐ were evacuated out of southern Syria through Israel to Jordan.
The mass evacuation mission was conceived by Britannia, Germany and Canada, and supported by Israel, Jordan, US and the UN.
The civil defense volunteers, widely known as the White Helmets, are accused of staging fake chemical attacks in northern Syria in order to prompt western countries into bombing positions for the Syrian Army.
[The National] The US sanctioned Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s wife and several close associates in an escalation of the Trump administration's efforts to punish the socialist regime for corruption and anti-democratic practices.
Cilia Flores de Maduro, 61, is the first lady, a former attorney general and head of the National Assembly. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez, as well as Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino were also included.
President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... said shortly after the penalties were announced on Tuesday that his administration is looking at further sanctions "very strongly."
"What is going on in Venezuela really is unacceptable," Mr Trump said later Tuesday during a meeting with Colombian President Ivan Duque Marquez at the United Nations ...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks... . "The Maduro regime is obviously not doing the job."
US pressure on Mr Maduro has increased as the South American nation deals with hyperinflation that’s expected to reach one million percent by the end of the year, vast food shortages and collapsing oil production. The leftist leader is widely unpopular but has clung to power through what the US claims are rigged elections and corruption.
"President Maduro relies on his inner circle to maintain his grip on power, as his regime systematically plunders what remains of Venezuela’s wealth," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

[The National] A Thai court on Tuesday convicted nine young men from southern Thailand of planning to set off a boom-mobile in the capital, in a case in which many of the defendants said they were tortured into making false confessions.
The Criminal Court in Bangkok found all nine guilty of two offenses ‐ belonging to an underground criminal group and conspiracy ‐ and sentenced each to four years' imprisonment. One was also found guilty of illegal possession of bombs, giving him a total of six years in prison. Their original sentences were eight years and 12 years, respectively, which were halved because of their confessions, which is normal practice in Thai courts. Five defendants were acquitted.
The case began when at least 50 Thai Moslems, mostly students at Bangkok's Ramkhamhaeng University, were rounded up in joint police-military sweeps on Oct. 10, 2016. They were released but 13 were reenjugged Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages! the following month along with an additional suspect.
At least seven of the 14 defendants said they had been tortured or otherwise physically abused in jug, but the presiding judge said the court considered their allegations baseless as the men did not provide any evidence and did not report the cases to police.
The guilty verdict was based mainly on the confessions. The only other major evidence presented against them was traces of kaboom found on one of the men one week after he was first detained.
All 14 men are from Thailand's deep south, which has been plagued by a bloody insurgency since 2004. Moslems in the poverty-stricken south feel they are treated as second-class citizens in Thailand, which is overwhelmingly Buddhist.
Virtually all the violence carried out by Moslem separatist turbans has been limited to Thailand's three southernmost provinces. But a series of bombings at popular seaside towns in August 2016 which killed four people and maimed dozens raised fears among law enforcement agencies that attacks could spread to Bangkok.

[North Africa Post] The succession crisis in Algeria continues to spill ink after former French Ambassador Bernard Bajolet claimed that ailing President Bouteflika ... 10th president-for-life of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and is currently on his third or fourth term. Maybe it's the fifth.... is artificially maintained alive.
This statement comes as voices with vested interest in the regime are calling for a fifth term for President Bouteflika whose public appearances are a thing of the past.
Bajolet who served as chief French external intelligence agency (DGSE) delivered a scathing criticism of the Algerian regime at an interview with Le Figaro, saying that the Algerian President is artificially maintained alive. "His superb comb-over is still intact, however"
"President Bouteflika, with all the respect I feel for him, is kept alive artificially. And nothing will change in this transition period," he said.
Prominent Algerian politicians and intellectuals expressed outcry as the Algerian regime prepares a fifth term for Bouteflika who is now confined to a wheelchair.
The President who recently underwent medical checkups in Switzerland ...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell... amid a cholera outbreak in his country is seriously ill and his voice is barely intelligible.
Bouteflika has been frail since suffering a stroke in 2013, which weakened his mobility and forced him to work from his residence in Zeralda, west of Algiers.
Analysts deem that maintaining a sick President whose physical and mental capacities are shrouded in uncertainty is indicative of a power struggle within the country’s regime.
The contending clans within the regime seem not in agreement over Bouteflika’s successor. Therefore, they maintain the ailing 80-year old President as a time buying measure in a sign that bodes ill for the country’s future.
Bouteflika’s health also casts a shadow on the opacity of a regime, where power is generally presumed to reside among groups of military leaders, intelligence officials, businessmen, and politicians collectively known as Le Pouvoir.
Regime opacity and the secrecy shrouding the successor to Bouteflika have also been hampering Algeria from carrying out economic reforms to wean their economy from dependence on hydrocarbons
Uncertainty over Bouteflika’s succession adds to Algeria’s explosive mix: ailing economy, dwindling oil revenues, widespread corruption, fragile social cohesion and lingering terrorist threat, which make the country a powder keg waiting to explode.

[AlMasdar] A Russian Su-35S fighter jet reportedly intercepted a U.S. F-22 Raptor combat aircraft over Syria, the Defence-Blog.com reported today.
The Defence Blog’s report cited an Instagram photo from an unofficial Russian pilot, today; it showed the moment the F-22 Raptor was allegedly intercepted by the Russian Su-35S.
"Photographs, made by the infrared search and track fire control system of the Russian Su-35S, shows in (SIC) infrared spectrum an F-22 Raptor fighter jet flying over Syria," the Defence Blog reported.
No further details were released.
Neither the U.S. Coalition nor the Russian Ministry of Defense have reported of any such event taking place over the skies of Syria.

The Deep State is certainly agitating for this. America's Islamist headchoppers are losing in Syria and an incident of direct conflict with the RuAF would just do the trick of getting a big war started.

Herb, you do realize it is a bad Photoshop. That aircraft has never flown over Syria.
America's position is pretty damn good. Trusty and sane (as one will find in the MidEast) allies controlling a quarter of the country w/ most of the postwar economic assets (oil and gas) with good access to water. Only thing better would be a stretch of coastline with a natural port.
If we have F-22s flying in Syria, it is only above friendly territory. No need to allow their SAMs and Radar stations practice on trying to track and target it.
Although, with the S-300s there now it might be a good training run for our F-22 drivers.

[PJM] In September 2017, speaking at the United Nations, President Donald Trump decried the abject failure of socialism as a form of governance, and more broadly, as an ideology:
The problem in Venezuela is not that socialism has been poorly implemented but that socialism has been faithfully implemented. From the Soviet Union to Cuba, Venezuela -- wherever socialism or Communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish, devastation, and failure. Those who preach the tenets of these discredited ideologies only contribute to the continued suffering of the people who live under these cruel systems. America stands with every person living under a brutal regime.
During his speech at the UN today, Trump returned to the subjects of socialism, communism, and Venezuela, where he noted that “more than 2 million people have fled the anguish inflicted by the Socialist Maduro regime, and its Cuban sponsors.” He added: “Not long ago Venezuela was one of the richest countries on earth.” Trump observed: “Today socialism has bankrupted the oil-rich nation and driven its people into abject poverty.” And he concluded with another denunciation of socialist/communist totalitarianism as a predatory, liberty-crushing ideology that produces despair:
Virtually everywhere socialism or communism has been tried it has produced suffering, corruption, and decay. Socialism’s thirst for power leads to expansion, incursion, and oppression. All nations of the world should resist socialism and the misery it brings to everyone.

One of the best speeches I have ever read. Why would an American want to be controlled by an international governing body. I recommend reading or watching the WHOLE speech. I would like the president to state that if any alien votes in this next election, that alien and their whole family will be taken off any government benefits as deported.
You have to search for 'Trump's UN speech text' otherwise you get all the media attacks/analysis.

A spate of unusual reports in Hong Kong and overseas Chinese-language media lend credence to the idea that, while Xi Jinping remains China’s undisputed paramount, his authority seems somewhat diminished. A moratorium of sorts appears to have been called on the relentless personality cult constructed around Xi, while signs have emerged that China’s economic policy making apparatus has been hamstrung by disagreements between Xi and his top economic policymaker over how to handle a deepening trade war with the United States. While the trade war appears to have applied enough pressure to China’s political system to open space for criticism of Xi’s leadership style and tactics, it is unlikely that Xi’s position atop China’s political hierarchy is in any serious danger.
[SmallWarsJournal] SWJ discussion with Luis Simón, research professor of international security at the Institute for European Studies (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), and director of the Brussels office of the Elcano Royal Institute. He recently published a Whitehall Paper for London’s Royal United Services Institute: The Spectre of a Westphalian Europe?
Describe the broader geopolitical trends that question and shatter the traditional pillars of European stability, jeopardizing the continental balance - making for a likely return to a Westphalian Europe. It could be a mix between the pre-1914 nightmare and a post American Europe – weak, more of a geopolitical appendix of Russia as well as a gray-zone lab for Moscow (as in the Norwegian Series "Occupied"). The end of the Cold War generated the return of suppressed ethnic and nationalist energies. Compounded by a potential US retrenchment, what would a Westphalian ecosystem mean for Europe? What are the inherent dangers of a Westphalian Europe?

I was on Morrissey Boulevard (about 1/2 mile south of the former Boston Globe HQ) at 11:15 yesterday morning when I saw this nut fly up on me and basically started tailgating me. Granted, I came onto it a little hot off of Exit 14 North off of I-93 (downhill slope, slight rain for weather), then I looked back & saw the guy speaking into one of those handheld radio thingies, and I'm like 'I'm not even speeding (much)!' So I switch from the middle lane to the right lane, figuring he was going to hit his blues any second and pull me over for something, but he took off into the other lanes a few seconds later.
Here's why he was on me, apparently running my plate (my cop roommate confirmed this when I told him the story):
"Police are still searching for the gray Toyota Corolla that Allen Warner drove away in on Monday night."
[Euronews] HONG KONG ‐ China has denied a request for a U.S. warship to visit Hong Kong, American officials said Tuesday.
The incident came amid rising tensions between Beijing and Washington over tariffs and follows the U.S. last week imposing sanctionson China after it bought arms from Russia.
The USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship, had been due to make a port call in the former British colony of Hong Kong in October, diplomatic sources told Reuters.
"The Chinese government did not approve a request for a U.S. port visit to Hong Kong by the USS Wasp," a spokeswoman for the U.S. consulate in the city said.
"We have a long track record of successful port visits to Hong Kong, and we expect that to continue," she added.
In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang did not directly answer a question on whether China had denied the request.
"For requests for U.S. military ships to visit Hong Kong, China has always carried out approvals case by case, in accordance with the principle of sovereignty and the detailed situation," he told reporters, without elaborating.
[DoD]The fight continues in the Middle Euphrates River Valley to wrest the last 2 percent of land once controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria from the grasp of the terror group, Defense Secretary James N. Mattis said here today.
“That fighting is on-going and as we forecasted, it’s been a tough fight and we are winning,” the secretary told reporters.
The secretary said Syrian leaders have to be well aware of the U.S. position on the regime using chemical weapons. He stressed “there is zero evidence” that any opposition groups possess chemical weapons or the technology to employ those weapons.
The U.S. goal in Syria remains to end the tragedy that would have ended years ago, if Russia and Iran had not intervened, Mattis said. “We want to support the Geneva process -- the U.N.-mandated process. … In that scope what we want to do is make certain that ISIS does not come back and upset everything again.”
COMBATING ISIS
The U.S. and allies are training local security forces inside Syria. The United States is working with Turkey to launch joint patrols in Manbij. “I think we are close on that; it’s complex,” Mattis said. “Once we get those patrols going along the line of contact and we take out the rest of the [ISIS] caliphate, our goal would be to set up local security elements that prevent the return of ISIS while at the same time diplomatically supporting … the Geneva process.”
The secretary said Russia’s vetoes of United Nations resolutions early in the process with Syria, “kept the U.N. marginalized at a time when it might have been able to stop what unfolded. Iran then sent in their proxy forces.”
Iranians are in Syria. Iran is propping up the Assad regime with forces, money, weapons and proxies. “Part of this overarching problem is we have to address Iran,” Mattis said. “Everywhere you go in the Middle East, where there is instability, you find Iran.”
Iran’s has a role to play in the peace process, the secretary said. And that “is to stop fomenting trouble,” he added.

MUMBAI (AFP) - An Indian passenger sparked panic in mid-air when he tried to open a plane door, apparently mistaking it for the toilet, the airline and reports said.
The man was travelling on a GoAir flight from New Delhi to Patna on Saturday when he attempted to open the aircraft's rear exit, the carrier said.
"A co-passenger raised the alarm and he was intercepted by the crew," GoAir said in a statement emailed to AFP on Tuesday.
Indian media reports said he was a first time flier in his late 20s.
When fellow passengers asked him what he was doing he told them he "needed to use the washroom urgently and kept tugging at the exit door", The Telegraph, a Kolkata-based newspaper, quoted an airport official as saying.
To Patna he flew from New Delhi,
But something had hijacked his belly:
They sent out a scooper
For poor B.D. Pooper,
And some say that plane is still smelly.

According to Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA), a member of the Committee, said he spoke with Ramirez. She made it very clear that she gave her story to the press, which can be found in The New Yorker article that was posted late Sunday night, The Washington Times reported.
"Our counsel repeatedly tried to reach him," Kennedy said. "They finally did reach him, and he said we are not issuing a statement. He said if you want our statement, read the New Yorker."
Ramirez has a sign outside of her Boulder, Colorado home saying she will not speak to the press. Anyone member of the press who would like more information is encouraged to call her lawyer.

[Sputnik] A Chinese national who arrived in the US on a student visa and studied at the Illinois Institute Technology has been arrested for allegedly "working at the direction of a high-level intelligence officer" in the Ministry of State Security for China, the US Justice Department announced Tuesday.
The suspect, Ji Chaoqun, is 27 years old and was arrested Tuesday in Chicago, according to the Justice Department. He is accused of secretly carrying out the orders of an officer in the Jiangsu Province Ministry of State Security, a branch of China's Ministry of State Security.
"According to the complaint, Ji was born in China and arrived in the United States in 2013 on an F1 Visa, for the purpose of studying electrical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. In 2016, Ji enlisted in the US Army Reserves as an E4 Specialist under the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) program, which authorizes the US Armed Forces to recruit certain legal aliens whose skills are considered vital to the national interest," the Justice Department said in a press release.
When applying to the MAVNI program, Ji specifically denied having had contact with a foreign government within the past seven years, and later failed to disclose his relationship and contacts with the Chinese government in an interview with a US Army officer, the charge alleges.
Prosecutors claimed during his hearing that Ji used his position to spy on US engineers and defense contractors. The Justice Department complaint alleges that Ji targeted eight individuals for possible recruitment, among them Chinese nationals working as engineers and scientists in the US, some for defense contractors.
The US Army's military intelligence unit, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the US Attorney's Office in Illinois worked on the case. Ji was due in court at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday. While Ji remains innocent until proven guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison, the Justice Department noted. Ji is being charged with one count of acting as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the Justice Department.
According to an FBI special agent's affidavit, Ji scouted eight "naturalized US citizens born in Taiwan or China now living in the United States. All eight individuals either currently worked in or were recently retired from a career in the science and technology industry, including several individuals specializing in aerospace fields." Ji also obtained background reports from Intelius, Instant Checkmate and Spokeo before sending these reports to an unknown email address, which was then forwarded to an unnamed Chinese intelligence officer. Ji described this information as "eight sets of midterm test questions for the last three years," the affidavit noted.
"Based upon my training and experience, it appears that Ji was tasked by Intelligence Officer A to provide him with biographical information on eight individuals for possible recruitment… Ji attempted to cover up the work he was doing on behalf of Intelligence Office A by misrepresenting the contents of the attachments, calling them 'Midterm Test Questions' rather than stating the true contents of the email — background checks on ethnic Chinese working as engineers and scientists, including for cleared US defense contractors," said the FBI special agent investigating the case.
"It is typical trade craft for Chinese intelligence officers to instruct their US assets to conceal information they are providing to their handlers in China in order to protect that information, the asset and the intelligence officer," the FBI agent noted.

[TheDrive] Shoigu’s remarks are significant and worth taking seriously. The delivery of S-300s to Assad’s regime would be a “significant escalation” of the situation in Syria, U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton said at a press conference to mark the beginning of the annual U.N. Nations General Assembly gathering in New York on Sept. 24, 2018. He added that he hoped Russia would reconsider.
"[Israeli] Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu said that transferring advanced weapons systems into irresponsible hands will increase the dangers in the region, and added that Israel will continue to defend its security and its interests," in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to an official Israel government statement. Putin, who had earlier downplayed the seriousness of the Il-20 shoot down, said the plan was “compliant with [the] current situation and aimed at eliminating any potential threat to life of Russian servicemen,” according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
However, this is not the first time Russia has threatened to give Assad S-300s. After the massive U.S., U.K., and French cruise missile barrage against various targets in Syria in April 2018, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that his country would reconsider a long-stalled sale of the surface-to-air missile systems to the Syrian regime. There were rumors later that month, and again in May 2018, that the Kremlin had made good on this threat, but there has not been any evidence to substantiate those claims. Russia has its own S-300s in Syria.
In addition, Shoigu was very careful to stress that Russia would only jam aircraft that appeared to be inbound for attacks on areas of Syria that are situated along or near the country's Mediterranean coastline, which just so happens to be where the Kremlin's Khmeimim air base and Tartus naval base are located. Israel has conducted hundreds of air and missile strikes in Syria since the country’s civil war began and routinely sends aircraft across Lebanon, where they then release standoff weapons and often never actually enter Syrian airspace.
More importantly, Israel had made it clear, both rhetorically and with its actions, that it will not sit idly by and allow Iran and Iranian-backed groups, such as the Lebanese militant organization Hezbollah, to exploit the situation in Syria to expand their military capabilities and spread their influence. In particular, strikes against weapons shipments to Hezbollah are seen as an existential threat to the country and are non-negotiable.
The Israeli Air Force’s loss of an F-16I Sufa multi-role combat jet to a Syrian SA-5 in February 2018 has done nothing to slow their operational tempo – if anything, the opposite has occurred. In addition, the country has a squadron of F-35I Adir stealth fighters for missions it deems high-risk, but absolutely necessary and says that it has already sent them into combat, but to what extent remains unclear. Israel's increasingly broad menu of standoff weapons and their highly advanced electronic warfare and cyber capabilities also make the news of S-300s being supplied to Syria less of an issue than some want to believe.
Furthermore, Israel routinely targets Assad's air defenses to clear the way for further strikes and is likely to destroy any Syrian-operated S-300s. There is no indication that Russia would be inclined to continue supplying replacement systems to Syria or to engage in any direct conflict with Israeli forces – risking a potential broader conflict with a nuclear-armed opponent.

I'm amazed anyone buys it. But I guess it can take out Eastern Bloc stuff. American and Israeli jets seem to have no problem pimp slapping the system and hitting their targets.

Will the S-300s be protected by a political Russian tripwire, i.e. will there be a token presence of Russian military personnel who would come to harm if the S-300s were attacked and neutralized?
In a broader sense will Russia set up such a tripwire to protect Iran's forces in Syria and perhaps Iran's nuclear assets?

[Express. UK] A CAR ploughed into a crowd of children and their parents on a walk near Karlshamn, in Sweden, police revealed today. Two pupils were hurt with a police manhunt now underway.
A spokesman for Sweden's police service said children "threw themselves" out of the way of the car, which appeared to have aimed directly for the group of 100 people.
He said: "The car accelerated into the group of students and teachers.
"The car increased speed and drove straight towards them.
"He drove into two of the students. One was injured on the wrist and possibly the other student was also injured."
Police have today appealed for any information on the horrifying incident, which took place at 1pm local time (12pm BST) yesterday. The group was made up of 100 children and 10 teachers from Mjallby secondary school.
They were walking from Hinnedalsvagen to Grundsjon as part of a social event. The car was described as a black or dark blue Saab. It was driving at around 25mph when it hit the crowd.

Killing me here! The Express article differs a bit from local reportage. Sounds like the kids were walking down from "Grundsjon" (a little pond on the county line (and a long distance walking trail)) to Gammalstorp (aka Nowheresville, known mostly for a church that stands like an island amidst farmed fields that used to be lake or wetland). Couple of miles through woods and fields. Not the kind of place you'd run into jihadis (or vice versa). Careless farmfolk, maybe? Officious chaperone and/or obstreperous schoolkids? Not to be prejudiced -- loved the place! -- but from what I saw of Sweden a while back, I'd expect everyone involved to be pickled, and quick to cop an attitude. Wouldn't it be a hoot if the two "injured" turned out to be immigrant kids banging on Farmer Sven's car?

Feinstein should be censured. Better yet, tossed out of the Senate by the voters.
California has a new system in which only two candidates are on the general election ballot and these are the two top vote getters in the primaries. What this means is that, if the two top vote getters in the primaries are Democrats, Republicans are effectively disenfranchised in the general election. Republicans have no candidate for whom they can vote, we only get to choose between two Democrats. It sucks. No third parties either.
In our last Senate election, Kamala Harris (D) ran against Loretta Sanchez (D). I just left that part of my ballot blank. I couldn't bring myself to vote for either one of them.
This November I'll vote for Kevin de Leon (D) who is running against Diane Feinstein (D). I don't know much about de Leon and I suspect that he'll be just as bad as Feinstein if not worse.
But JohnQC is right. Feinstein should rightfully be tossed out of office on her wrinkled old ass. This whole Ford thing is only the latest outrage. That business with her Chinese chauffeur who turned out to be a Chicom spy is probably far worse if anybody would ever investigate. The fact that her husband has made millions in Chinese deals that had to be cleared by the communist government is suspicious at best, stinks to high heaven and should also be investigated.
DiFi must go.

Aircraft are removed from service for maintenance and engine rehab based partly on engine start cycles. If there aren't enough assets, and critical missions, they can run longer if they run longer.
#3
If you don't shut 'em down, you don't have to do the dreaded dailies and preflights. just a splash of gas, swap the crew and send 'em on their way. Sometimes ordies get a bit testy if you want to re-arm while the power is still running to the pylons.....but that is what the weight-on-wheels switch is for, right?
#4
Did this in the army with the trucks too. Allowed for very fast fueling and scooting.
The reason it is more dangerous is that there is always a greater chance of ignition for the spilled fuel (there is always spilled fuel) if engines are running. Having your tanker area catch fire is always frowned upon.
[IsraelTimes] Intelligence ministry: Attackers who killed 25 at military parade in Ahvaz were funded by ’Arab reactionary countries’
Iran on Tuesday identified the perpetrators of a deadly attack on a military parade as "jihadist separatists," announcing a series of arrests and appearing to tie the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... group to the bloodshed.
The intelligence ministry published photos of the five men it said carried out the assault Saturday in the southwestern city of Ahvaz that killed 24 people including civilians.
"The five members of a terrorist squad affiliated to jihadist separatist groups supported by Arab reactionary countries were identified," the ministry said in a statement.
"The terrorists’ hideout was found and 22 people involved [in the attack] were tossed in the slammer I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece! ," it said, adding that explosives were seized along with military and communications equipment.
The attack targeted a parade in Khuzestan province commemorating the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.
The region, which has a large ethnic Arab community, was a major battleground of the conflict and saw ethnic unrest in 2005 and 2011.
Iranian officials initially blamed Arab separatists ‐ who they claimed were behind previous unrest ‐ for the latest attack, saying they were backed by Gulf Arab allies of the United States.
This version was bolstered when a movement called "Ahwaz National Resistance," an Arab separatist group, grabbed credit shortly after the assault.
But the Islamic State group (IS) was also quick to claim responsibility and later published a video of men it said were the attackers.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Monday linked the attackers to Iraq and Syria, where IS once had major strongholds.
"This cowardly act was the work of those very individuals who are rescued by the Americans whenever they are in trouble in Iraq and Syria and who are funded by the Saudis and the [United] Arab Emirates," Khamenei was quoted as saying by his official website.
IS SCREENSHOT
The photographs of the alleged attackers released by the authorities Tuesday showed the bodies of four men named as Ayyad Mansouri, Fouad Mansouri, Ahmad Mansouri, and Javad Saari.
The picture published by the intelligence ministry of an alleged fifth member of the group, Hassan Darvishi, was a screenshot taken from the video put out by IS.
According to local media two of the Mansouris are brothers and the third is their cousin.
Abdullah Ganji, the managing director of the ultra-conservative Javan daily, wrote on Twitter that a third Mansouri brother "was killed in a suicide kaboom in Syria."
There has been no known presence of Iranian Arab separatist groups in Syria.
Ganji also wrote in an article that the nature of the attack in Ahvaz, in which the assailants died, far more resembled IS than the "bombing or hit and run operations" typical of Arab separatist groups.
"To kill until you are killed, without trying to leave the scene is the method of [IS]," he said, pointing to parallels with a high-profile attack in Iran last year.
On June 7, 2017, in Tehran, 17 people were killed and dozens maimed in simultaneous attacks on the parliament and on the tomb of revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ‐ the first inside Iran claimed by IS.
Ganji, however, appeared to hedge his analysis and said that if it was still confirmed that the Arab separatists committed the attack then it could mean they are in league with IS.
Iranian authorities have blamed the United States, Israel, Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... , and United Arab Emirates of being behind the Ahvaz attack, which Tehran has promised to "rigorously punish."

Is there even any In-N-outs in Texas? I can't recall seeing one. And I'm not so sure it's Whataburger honestly. Chick-filet is the one with 3 lane drive throughs and is ALWAYS busy, every location, anytime they are open.

The "source" of this was an App called Foursquare... So transplanted out-of-state urban Millennials would starve looking for an In-N-Outs without the help of an iPhone?

I've seen several in the I-35 corridor, even eaten at one. Unimpressed.
On the other hand, my wife, who has a fondness for the newest 'gourmet' burgers, allows me to take her to Whataburger (family owned sine 1952) every so often.

I've heard both burger joints are good. I'll say I am richer for not living within driving distance of a Braum's. Could break a budget at Winstead's as well.

Yes, we have In-n-Out Burger joints in Texas. 25 of them in the DFW Metroplex alone. They're okay, I'm still a Whataburger guy myself. Although Sonic will do as a standby.
[Daily Excelsior] Three turbans and a soldier were killed in an encounter near the Line of Control (LoC) in Tanghdar sector of North Kashmire’s Kupwara district today taking the toll of turbans killed in the encounter to 5.
Army today killed three turbans near the LoC in Tanghdar sector during an operation that was launched two days ago after a group of turbans infiltrated into the sector. A para commando of 4-Para was also killed in the encounter today.
It may be mentioned here that the troops of Army’s 20 JAT challenged the movement of a group of at least five turbans near Eagle Post along the LoC on Saturday morning after they noticed them infiltrating into the sector.

The troops deployed near the fence challenged the infiltrators leading to a brief exchange of fire. The reinforcements were rushed to the area and a massive operation was launched against the Death Eater group.
Two turbans were killed in the encounter last evening. Two AK-47 rifles, magazines and war like stores were recovered from the two killed Death Eaters.
The Army tightened the cordon and more troops were rushed to the area as their associates were still on the lam. This morning, three more turbans were killed in the encounter, who were hiding in the area and one para-commondo, Lance Naik Sandeep Singh was killed.
Three AK-47 rifles, magazines and war like stores were recovered from the encounter site. Sources said that the documents recovered from the killed turbans suggested that they belonged to Lashkar-e-Taiba ...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI... (LeT).
An Army front man said here that the troops in Tanghdar sector foiled an infiltration bid killing five turbans and one soldier was also killed in the operation. He said that this was one of the major infiltration bids that was foiled by Army.
Army along the LoC has been put on maximum alert after inputs that the turbans may try to intensify the efforts of infiltration ahead of winter when snow closes the mountain passes.

[AlAhram] Efforts to rescue Tunisia's ailing economy face the prospect of fresh turmoil after the president declared his alliance with moderate Islamists at an end, deepening divisions in a fragile coalition managing the country's transition from autocracy.
Political analysts say Monday evening's announcement by President Beji Caid Essebsi could make it difficult for the government to enact tough economic reforms sought by international lenders.
"There will be no real risk of toppling the government in parliament, but the problem is that division will deepen, social tension will rise and reforms are threatened under a fragile government coalition," Nizar Makni, a journalist and analyst said.
"Reforms need broad consensus and the lack of compromise may lead to mass protests in the streets, especially that powerful unions rejected all proposed reforms", he added.
Although struggling with high unemployment and inflation, the coalition of moderate Islamists and secular forces has been running what has been hailed as the Arab Spring's only democratic success, avoiding the upheaval seen in Egypt, Libya or Syria.
The Ennahda Islamist party and secular Nidaa Tounes agreed in 2014 on a constitution granting far-reaching political rights, limiting the role of religion and holding free elections, which stands out in a region often run by autocrats.
But Tunisia fell into a political crisis again this year after Essebsi's son, who is the leader of Nidaa Tounes, called for the dismissal of prime minister Youssef Chahed because of his government's failure to revive the economy.
His demand was supported by the powerful UGTT union, which rejected economic reforms proposed by Chahed.
But Ennahda came to Chahed's defence, saying the departure of the prime minister would hit stability at a time when the country needed economic reforms.
In his more than two years in office, Chahed has pushed through austerity measures and structural reforms, such as cutting fuel subsidies that have helped to underpin a $2.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other financial support.
The president raised the stakes on Monday evening.
"The consensus and relationship between me and Ennahha has ended, after they chose to form another relationship with Youssef Chahed," Essebsi, the founder of Nidaa Tounes, said in a televised interview.
Analysts said the president's announcement would probably not lead to the overthrow of the government, which still has the support of at least 110 of a total 217 politicians in parliament.
But Chahed could find it difficult to enact tough reforms in the face of a strong opposition front including the unions, the president and Nidaa Tounes party.
Last week the UGTT labour union called a public sector strike for Oct. 24 to protest at Chahed's privatisation plans.
"The president's comments will deepen the crisis," senior Ennahda official Lotfi Zitoun told Rooters.
"Ennahda seeks stability and a dialogue that includes all partners to get out of the crisis."
By surviving for more than two years, Chahed has become the longest-serving of Tunisia's nine prime ministers since its Arab Spring democratic revolution in 2011.
Chahed has gathered enough support in parliament to stave off a possible vote of no confidence by working with Ennahda and a number of other politicians including 10 Nidaa Tounes rebels.
Since 2011 uprising, nine cabinets have failed to resolve Tunisia's economic problems, which include high inflation and unemployment, and impatience is rising among lenders such as the IMF, which have kept the country afloat.

[ARABNEWS] At least 12 Tuareg civilians died Tuesday in an attack by button men in eastern Mali, a region hit by chronic unrest between local tribes and Lion of Islams, sources said.
About 200 people, many of them civilians from the Fulani and Tuareg tribes have been killed in the area this year as gunnies claiming allegiance to ISIS clash with local groups backing a French security force and the Malian army.
The attack took place 45 kilometers (28 miles) west of Menaka according to a local official, a security source, and a statement by ex-rebels in the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MSA).
"Armed men on cycle of violences killed at least 12 civilians," the official told AFP, citing a resident of the town who claimed to have seen the bodies.
The official, who asked to remain anonymous, added that "for now we do not know exactly who did it. I don’t know if it was the result of a dispute between tribes or a terrorist act."
The security source said some of his sources spoke of 12 dead, while others put the toll at 16.
The MSA statement said "armed individuals on cycle of violences had executed 17 civilians" from two Tuareg camps.
Mali’s unrest stems from a 2012 Tuareg separatist uprising which was exploited by holy warriors in order to take over key cities in the north.
The holy warriors were largely driven out in a French-led military operation launched in January 2013.

[American Thinker] Many politicians in Washington, D.C. are more concerned with getting elected than with governing this country. Veterans see this as something that goes against their spirit. They served in the military to protect and defend, and now they want a chance to serve in Congress to fight for their fellow Americans. Their mission is to get results and not constantly be lame-duck representatives. One such candidate is Michael Waltz, who is running in Florida's District 6, the seat Ron DeSantis currently holds as he runs for governor. He interviewed with American Thinker about why he is running for office.
He told American Thinker, "I have been serving my country my entire life, twenty-two years as a Green Beret. I wake up in the morning thinking about the issues this country is facing. We can either yell at the TV or roll up our sleeves and serve in the political arena. When someone is in the foxhole, he does not care about differences in race, religion, creed, sex, or economic or political background. It is all about mission and country. There is a commonality of service on how we should move this country forward."
Waltz's résumé shows that he has multiple kinds of experience. A retired Army lieutenant colonel, he was awarded four Bronze Stars, including two for valor. A counterterrorism adviser during the George W. Bush administration, he worked in the Pentagon as a defense policy director for secretaries of defense Rumsfeld and Gates, and in the White House as Vice President Cheney's counterterrorism adviser. He is a small business-owner, CEO of Metis Solutions.

Looks like a good candidate to replace DeSantis. Waltz was an anti-Trumper in 2016. Seems like he has come around to being a Trump supporter. It's either Waltz(R) or a Democrat. Waltz looks like a good choice.
[Asharq Al-Awsat] Scientists said Monday they had succeeded for the first time in wiping out an entire population of malaria-carrying mosquitos in the lab using a gene editing tool to programme their extinction.
So-called gene drive technology works by forcing evolution's hand, ensuring that an engineered trait is passed down to a higher proportion of offspring -- across many generations -- than would have occurred naturally.
In experiments with the species Anopheles gambiae, scientists at Imperial College London tweaked a gene known as doublesex so that more females in each generation could no longer bite or reproduce.
After only eight generations, there were no females left and the population collapsed due to lack of offspring.
"This breakthrough shows that gene drive can work, providing hope in the fight against a disease that has plagued mankind for centuries," said lead author Andrea Crisanti, a professor in Imperial's Department of Life Sciences.
Previous attempts by the same team and others to induce the genetically programmed extinction of mosquitos in the laboratory ran into "resistance" in the form of mutations that fought back against the high-tech engineering.
- A TIMELY BREAKTHROUGH -
The next step will be to test the technology in a confined laboratory setting that mimics a tropical environment, said Crisanti.
"It will be at least five-to-ten years before we consider testing any mosquitoes with gene drive in the wild," he said in a statement.
The doublesex gene targeted in the experiments is deeply "conserved", meaning that is formed tens or even hundreds of millions of years ago and is today shared by many insects with only minor variations.
"This suggests the technology could be used in the future to specifically target other disease-carrying insects," the researchers said.
Scientists not involved in the study described it as a timely breakthrough.
"Traditional approaches to controlling mosquitoes -- especially the use of insecticides -- is becoming less effective," mainly due to the build-up of resistance, said Cameron Webb, a clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney.
The new research, published in Nature Biotechnology, was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has poured close to $100 million (95 million euros) into the development of gene drive technology -- especially via the research consortium Target Malaria -- with the aim of eradicating the disease.
The US military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), has also invested tens of millions of dollars.
"It is incumbent on DARPA to perform this research and develop technologies that can protect against accidental and intentional misuse," DARPA spokesman Jared Adams told AFP last December.

I can see something like this working if you can introduce enough modified mosquitoes to form a significant fraction of the breeding population. But if you can only introduce a minuscule fraction, how is the genetic modification going to spread? The descendants of the modified strains, by construction, don't reproduce as quickly as the native ones.

[IsraelTimes] Authorities say suspects collaborated with Iranian intelligence to establish organization named for Lebanese terror group, following years of unrest
Bahrain’s attorney general charged nearly 170 people on Tuesday with forming a Shiite terrorist organization named for Leb’s famed jihadist group and longtime Israel foe Hezbollah.
The small but strategic Gulf Arab kingdom has been dogged by persistent low-level violence since 2011, when its Sunni minority rulers bloodily suppressed Shiite-led protests for a constitutional monarchy with an elected prime minister.
The authorities have repeatedly accused Shiite Iran and it allies, including Hezbollah, of fomenting the unrest. Iran denies the charge.
Attorney general Ahmad al-Hamadi said 169 people, 111 of whom are in jug, will be tried for "forming a terrorist organization... under the name Bahrain Hezbollah" in collaboration with the Iranian intelligence services.
Hamadi did not specify when the trial would open or when the defendants had been placed in durance vile Please don't kill me! But he said some of them were accused of traveling abroad to receive training in weapons and explosives from Iran and its regional allies.
Analysts have expressed skepticism about previous Bahraini allegations of Iranian and Hezbollah involvement.
Hezbollah is one of the best trained and equipped terror groups in the world, while most of the Bahrain violence has consisted of throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at police patrols or planting crude pipe bombs.
The authorities have closed most peaceful avenues for protest, banning the main Shiite movement al-Wefaq, which was the largest bloc in parliament, and throwing dozens of its leaders behind bars.
They and their Gulf Arab allies have also blacklisted Hezbollah as a terrorist organization and banned their citizens from any contact with the group or its members.
The crackdown has drawn periodic criticism from Western governments but the kingdom’s strategic position just across the Gulf from Iran makes it a key ally.
The islands are home to the US Fifth Fleet and house a new British naval base completed earlier this year.
[ARABNEWS] The defeated strongman of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen, is welcome in neighboring Sri Lanka, Colombo said Tuesday, two days after his surprise defeat in presidential elections.

In a phone call on Monday, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe "informed Mr. Yameen that he is welcome in Colombo at any time," the premier’s office said.
Wickremesinghe made the call after hosting Yameen’s arch rival and former Maldives president Mohammed Nasheed at a luncheon meeting on Monday.

[ARABNEWS] The Gazoo Strip’s economy is in "free fall," a report from the World Bank warned Tuesday, calling for urgent action by Israel and the international community to avoid "immediate collapse."
According to the report, Gazoo’s economy contracted by 6 percent in the first quarter of 2018. It said unemployment is now over 50 percent ‐ and over 70 percent among Gazoo’s youth.
The World Bank cited various factors, starting with Israel’s decade-long blockade against the territory’s Lion of IslamHamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbung millipede, rulers, for the precarious downturn. It also cited budget cuts by the rival Paleostinian Authority and a reduction in international aid to the Paleostinians, particularly from the United States.
"A combination of war, isolation, and internal rivalries has left Gazoo in a crippling economic state and exacerbated the human distress," said Marina Wes, the World Bank’s director for the region.

About the issues raised in the zonal council meeting, the Home Minister said out of 22 points, 20 have been resolved, adding during the last four years, in 12 meetings, 680 issues were discussed of which 428 were resolved.

Nazik, who was marked in the blue category of the Interior Ministry’s wanted gunnies list, confessed to planning and organizing the bombings, saying that on a tipoff from Syrian intelligence units, he scouted the scene of the crime prior to the attack and moved explosives from Syria to Turkey.
The May 2013 bombings in the Reyhanli district of Hatay province near Turkey’s border with Syria left 53 dead. Some 912 buildings, 891 workplaces and 148 vehicles were heavily damaged in the attack.

The rise of SpaceX as a major launch provider has been the most surprising evolution of the launch sector during the past decade. It forced incumbent industrial actors to adapt their business model to face this new competitor. European actors are particularly threatened today, since European Autonomous Access to Space highly depends on the competitive edge of the Ariane launcher family. This study argues that the framework of analysis which best describes the events leading to the current situation is the theory of disruptive innovation.

[ARABNEWS] Human Rights Watch on Tuesday accused Yemen’s Houthi ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ... militia of hostage-taking, torture and other serious abuses against people in their custody.
The New York-based watchdog said it had documented 16 cases of illegal imprisonment by the Iran-backed Shiite Lion of Islams, "in large part to extort money from relatives or to exchange them for people held by opposing forces."
"Houthi officials have treated detainees brutally, often amounting to torture," HRW said, adding that former detainees described being beaten with iron rods, wooden sticks and assault rifles.
Prisoners were shackled to walls, caned and threatened with rape, it said, noting that hostage-taking "is a serious violation of the laws of war and a war crime."
"The Houthis have added profiteering to their long list of abuses and offenses against the people under their control in Yemen," said HRW Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson.
"Rather than treat detainees humanely, some Houthi officials are exploiting their power to turn a profit through detention, torture and murder."

[ARABNEWS] US President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... used his address at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday to launch a searing attack on Iran, saying its leadership sows "chaos, death and destruction."
The US president criticized Iran as a "corrupt dictatorship" that is "plundering the Iranian people to pay for aggression abroad."
Trump told the annual gathering: "They do not respect their neighbors or borders or the sovereign rights of nations."
In response, Trump reiterated the US commitment to a "campaign of economic pressure" to deny Iran funds for its "regional behavior," and that more sanctions will follow after the resumption of oil sanctions on Nov. 5.

[ARABNEWS] His Hollywood career and good-guy image in ruins, Bill Cosby was sentenced Tuesday to three to 10 years behind bars for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman and was immediately led away in handcuffs at age 81, becoming the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to be sent to prison.
The punishment all but completed the dizzying, late-in-life fall from grace for the comedian, former TV star and breaker of racial barriers.
"It is time for justice. Mr. Cosby, this has all circled back to you. The time has come," Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill said. He quoted from victim Andrea Constand’s own statement to the court, in which she said Cosby took her "beautiful, young spirit and crushed it."
Cosby declined the opportunity to speak before the sentence came down, and afterward he sat smiling, laughing and chatting with defense team. His wife of 54 years, Camille, was not in court. Constand smiled broadly upon hearing the punishment and was hugged by others in the courtroom.
Cosby’s lawyers asked that he be allowed to remain free on bail while he appeals his conviction, but the judge appeared incredulous over the request and ordered him locked up immediately, saying that "he could quite possibly be a danger to the community."
Cosby was also fined $25,000.

"The establishment of a no-fly zone over the Russian military base in Latakia will prevent a repeat of the IL-20 aircraft tragedy," Bondarev told the Russian Federation’s Council this evening.
"After creating a no-fly zone in Latakia, it is necessary to announce that any unauthorized objects in the sky over Hmeimim Airport will definitely be eliminated," he added.
The Russian senator would add that the S-300 will not only be deployed at the Hmeimim Airbase, but also, in several parts of the country.
Earlier this evening, Russian President Vladimir Putin ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances... and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on the phone to discuss the current situation in Syria.
Reports from Moscow indicated that Putin informed Netanyahu that Russia does not accept Israel’s version of the events that took place on the night of the September 17th.
Russia expects its relations with Israel to remain the same, despite the upcoming delivery of the S-300 air defense system to Syria.

[IsraelTimes] Thousands of Paleostinians gather at security fence in nighttime protest, hurl stones at IDF soldiers, burn tires, and launch airborne incendiary devices
Two Paleostinians were seriously injured by Israeli fire in festivities along the Gazoo border on Tuesday evening, according to Paleostinian media reports.
Thousands of Gazooks had gathered at various points along the border with Israel to participate in the nighttime protest, which saw demonstrators burn tires, throw rocks at Israeli soldiers, and launch arson balloons into Israel, the reports said.
The Israel Defense Forces responded to the violence with live fire, injuring two Paleostinians, according to the reports.
Earlier on Tuesday, firefighters said they battled 12 fires in southern Israel that were sparked by the airborne incendiary devices flown over the border. All of the fires were put out or under control by Tuesday evening, fire and rescue services said.
The return of the fire balloons come as tensions along the Gazoo-Israel frontier have ramped back up after a brief lull, with the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, terror group leading weekly marches on the fence. The last several days have also seen smaller nightly protests along the border.
The nighttime protest on Tuesday comes days after Gazoo’s Hamas rulers called to step up the ongoing border protests in the wake of a report that Egypt-led efforts to broker a long-term ceasefire agreement with Israel had stalled. Hamas later denied reports the talks had collapsed, but the terror group’s front manSami Abu Zuhri ...a senior spokesman for Hamas. Zuhri gained notoriety in 2006 when he dropped his money belt containing somewhere between 640,000 and 900,000 euros, which was confiscated by Paleostinian security and customs officials at a routine border crossing from Egypt to Gaza. The news brought competing Hamas and Fatah forces to the crossing checkpoint for an epic face-making and hollering contest... admitted that progress was slow.
A surge of violence in Gazoo began in March with a series of protests along the border that were dubbed the "March of Return."
The festivities, which Israel says are being orchestrated by Gazoo’s Hamas rulers, have included regular rock and Molotov cocktail attacks on troops, as well as shooting and IED attacks aimed at IDF soldiers and attempts to breach the border fence.
