Wikileaks Confirms The Obvious - Dems and MSM Are One & The Same
Just in case anybody's wondering:
There are three key findings to emerge from yesterday's dump of leaked DNC emails released by Wikileaks:

◦There had been a plot designed to smear Bernie Sanders and to hand the Democratic nomination to Hillary on a silver platter
◦There has been repeated collusion between the DNC and the media
◦There has been questionable fundraising for both Hillary Clinton and the DNC.

Exclusive: MH370 Pilot Flew a Suicide Route on His Home Simulator Closely Matching Final Flight
If this is true, it's hard to believe somebody hasn't at least been checking along the route the pilot flew in his homemade flight simulator. Then again, it goes against the narrative . . . .
New York [magazine] has obtained a confidential document from the Malaysian police investigation into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that shows that the plane's captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, conducted a simulated flight deep into the remote southern Indian Ocean less than a month before the plane vanished under uncannily similar circumstances. The revelation, which Malaysia withheld from a lengthy public report on the investigation, is the strongest evidence yet that Zaharie made off with the plane in a premeditated act of mass murder-suicide.

The document presents the findings of the Malaysian police's investigation into Zaharie. It reveals that after the plane disappeared in March of 2014, Malaysia turned over to the FBI hard drives that Zaharie used to record sessions on an elaborate home-built flight simulator. The FBI was able to recover six deleted data points that had been stored by the Microsoft Flight Simulator X program in the weeks before MH370 disappeared, according to the document. Each point records the airplane's altitude, speed, direction of flight, and other key parameters at a given moment. The document reads, in part:

Based on the Forensics Analysis conducted on the 5 HDDs obtained from the Flight Simulator from MH370 Pilot's house, we found a flight path, that lead to the Southern Indian Ocean, among the numerous other flight paths charted on the Flight Simulator, that could be of interest, as contained in Table 2.

Taken together, these points show a flight that departs Kuala Lumpur, heads northwest over the Malacca Strait, then turns left and heads south over the Indian Ocean, continuing until fuel exhaustion over an empty stretch of sea.

Search officials believe MH370 followed a similar route, based on signals the plane transmitted to a satellite after ceasing communications and turning off course. The actual and the simulated flights were not identical, though, with the simulated endpoint some 900 miles from the remote patch of southern ocean area where officials believe the plane went down. Based on the data in the document, here's a map of the simulated flight compared to the route searchers believe the lost airliner followed:

[Graphic of flight plan at link.]

Rumors have long circulated that the FBI had discovered such evidence, but Malaysian officials made no mention of the find in the otherwise detailed report into the investigation, "Factual Information," that was released on the first anniversary of the disappearance.

The credibility of the rumors was further undermined by the fact that many media accounts mentioned "a small runway on an unnamed island in the far southern Indian Ocean," of which there are none.

From the beginning, Zaharie has been a primary suspect, but until now no hard evidence implicating him has emerged. The "Factual Information" report states, "The Captain's ability to handle stress at work and home was good. There was no known history of apathy, anxiety, or irritability. There were no significant changes in his life style, interpersonal conflict or family stresses." After his disappearance, friends and family members came forward to described Zaharie as an affable, helpful family man who enjoyed making instructional YouTube videos for home DIY projects -- hardly the typical profile of a mass murderer.

The newly unveiled documents, however, suggest Malaysian officials have suppressed at least one key piece of incriminating information. This is not entirely surprising: There is a history in aircraft investigations of national safety boards refusing to believe that their pilots could have intentionally crashed an aircraft full of passengers. After EgyptAir 990 went down near Martha's Vineyard in 1999, for example, Egyptian officials angrily rejected the U.S. National Transport Safety Board finding that the pilot had deliberately steered the plane into the sea. Indonesian officials likewise rejected the NTSB finding that the 1997 crash of SilkAir 185 was an act of pilot suicide.

Previous press accounts suggest that Australian and U.S. officials involved in the MH370 investigation have long been more suspicious of Zaharie than their Malaysian counterparts. In January, Byron Bailey wrote in The Australian: "Several months after the MH370 disappearance I was told by a government source that the FBI had recovered from Zaharie's home computer deleted information showing flight plan waypoints ... my source ... left me with the impression that the FBI were of the opinion that Zaharie was responsible for the crash."

However, it's not entirely clear that the recovered flight-simulator data is conclusive. The differences between the simulated and actual flights are significant, most notably in the final direction in which they were heading. It's possible that their overall similarities are coincidental -- that Zaharie didn't intend his simulator flight as a practice run but had merely decided to fly someplace unusual.

Today, ministers from Malaysia, China, and Australia announced that once the current seabed search for MH370’s wreckage is completed, they will suspend further efforts to find the plane. The search was originally expected to wrap up this month, but stormy weather has pushed back the anticipated completion date to this fall. So far, 42,000 square miles have been covered at a cost of more than $130 million, with another 4,000 square miles to go.

"I must emphasise that this does not mean we are giving up on the search for MH370," Malaysian Transport minister Liow Tiong Lai said. Officials have previously stated that if they received "credible new information that leads to the identification of a specific location of the aircraft," the search could be expanded.

But some, including relatives of the missing passengers, believe that that evidentiary threshold has already been past. Recent months have seen the discovery of more than a dozen pieces of suspected aircraft debris, which analyzed collectively could narrow down where the plane went down. (The surprising absence of such wreckage for more than a year left me exploring alternative explanations that ultimately proved unnecessary.) The fact that Zaharie apparently practiced flying until he ran out of fuel over the remote southern Indian Ocean suggests the current search is on the right track -- and that another year of hunting might be a worthwhile investment.

#3  "The Captain's ability to handle stress at work and home was good. There was no known history of apathy, anxiety, or irritability. There were no significant changes in his life style, interpersonal conflict or family stresses."

That doesn't match what I heard from a VERY reliable source. Just the opposite as matter of fact. Pilot's personal life WAS in turmoil. Wife was fixin to divorce him and he had..performance issues w/girlfriend. He was also distraught over the ongoing political drama in MY as a Anwar Ibrahim supporter. Lastly - pilot had a very predictable pre-flight routine. He would arrive, do flight plan, pre-flight A/C, and smoke 1 x cigarette (numerous videos confirm). On this flight, after the pre-flight, he chained smoke about 8 cigarettes and looked visually upset - again caught on video. FBI thinks pilot is good for it.

75 years after it was first deployed, will US Army bring back the 'jeep'?
[FOX] Were it not for efforts by the U.S. military to develop a lightweight, unarmored, all-terrain vehicle for the battlefield there might not be a market for SUVs today. It all began 75 years ago last December when the United States military adopted the 'jeep', and while the iconic military vehicle was phased out and replaced by the Humvee ‐ the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) in the early 1980s ‐ the Army could go full circle and bring back the jeep.

Last year the Army began gearing up its Ground Mobility Vehicle Program for fiscal 2017. It was part of the Army's Combat Vehicle Modernization Strategy that sought to procure lightweight combat vehicles for infantry brigade combat teams. The vehicles considered sound very much like what first entered service back in 1940.

The Origins of the Jeep

The U.S. Army saw the need for such a go-anywhere four-wheel vehicle when it went "Over There" to France during the First World War. The Four Wheel Drive Auto (FWD) and Thomas B. Jeffery Company supplied the military with the first four-wheel drive trucks, but with another war looming military planners saw a need for a new light, cross-country reconnaissance vehicle. In July 1940 the Army formalized its requirements, which were submitted to 135 U.S. automobile manufacturers.

#2  I hope so - we need a fleet of M-ATVs and jeeps. The Chevy Blazer was a poor substitute except in the winter (had a decent heater), the HMMWV was terrible in the woods, cramped for its size, loud, thirsty, terrible to back up, underpowered, okay on the desert until IEDs appeared. The MRAP ATV has a lot of power for its size, decent protection and a is a fair battle taxi in an IED environ. The jeep was great in the woods, unstable on the highway, but did I mention great in the woods.

#3  Well, as a Battalion Motor Officer at Baumholder. Germany in 1982, I always knew these beasts as M151A2 vehicles, with primary pedigree to Willys Overland something or other.

Thanks to Jimmy Carter FORMERLY the worst POTUS, my crew spent countless hours welding angle iron onto Jeep frames, to keep them from disintegrating - and we also had a makeshift battery rebuild program going, to replenish vehicle batteries that were effectively non-existent, coming out of "the Carter years".

The one criticism I had of the M151A2 design was that it was designed so that if it was about to tip over - because it was on a sideways slope that was too severe to transit - it was designed so that the wheels on the low-end side would simply "fold" - and cause the Jeep to do a sideways 360 degree roll. This "saved" the frame and wheelbase - at the expense of killing or maiming everyone who was a passenger in the vehicle.

Wikileaks: DNC Chair DWS Tried to Score 7 'Hamilton' Tickets
[Hollywood Reporter] Though Lin-Manuel Miranda has said his on-stage farewell, Hamilton is still the hot ticket on Broadway and everyone wants to score tickets -- including Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

In an email thread released Friday by WikiLeaks, Wasserman Schultz requested seven tickets on May 24 to the production for a 50th birthday trip with her college roommates to New York in December.

"Hey Zach, I think I mentioned to you briefly that I am planning a trip with my college roommates in December to NYC. It is for our 50th birthdays. Can you help me get 7 tickets to Hamilton from our friend who did the FR? We will be there from December 9-12. Let me know if there is anyone I need to speak with directly. Thank you so much," Wasserman Schultz requested from DNC's finance director Zach Allen.

"Of course, happy to ask! They usually don't take requests until a month out, and I'd need the form attached filled out (dos require a CC - it's $167/seat)," Allen replied.

Virginia Dem Gov. Voting Rights for Felons Defeated by VA Supreme Court
[Breitbart] RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Gov. Terry McAuliffe's action restoring the voting rights of more than 200,000 felons was unconstitutional, Virginia's highest court ruled Friday, siding with Republican lawmakers who said the governor overstepped his authority.

In a 4-3 decision, the Supreme Court of Virginia ordered the state to cancel the registration of the more than 11,000 felons who had signed up to vote so far under the governor's April executive order. Top Republicans called it "a major victory for the Constitution, the rule of law and the Commonwealth of Virginia."

"Our nation was founded on the principles of limited government and separation of powers. Those principles have once again withstood assault from the executive branch. This opinion is a sweeping rebuke of the governor’s unprecedented assertion of executive authority," House Speaker William Howell and Senate Majority Leader Thomas Norment said in a statement.

A spokesman for McAuliffe didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

#1  Let me guess... the court voted on party lines.

I'm all for some class of felons to get their rights back after a long period after prison where they show and prove they are rehabilitated and functioning members of society... but a governor simply can't declare it to be by fiat.

Gotta go through your state congress for that.

New Details of North Korean Spy Radio Messages Emerge
[Defense News] TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A North Korean broadcast of numbers on June 24 ended a 16-year sojourn that is surprising many who thought Pyongyang had given up on the old spy trick.

The practice was halted in 2000 after the first inter-Korea summit between North Korean President Kim Jong Il and South Korean President Kim Dae Jun.

The 14-minute broadcast of two sets of numbers by a female voice appears to have been the work of the Voice of Korea (formerly Radio Pyongyang), a North Korean radio propaganda station that broadcasts accolades of the Kim family.

A retired US National Security Agency source said the fact it was a 10-11 meter frequency band in the middle of the night, considering that North Korea does not have relay stations like many other shortwave stations, would make the target local to South Korea, Japan or northern China.

"Sun Spot cycle is low to zero right now so would not expect it to be a DX [long distance] transmission," according to the NSA source.

As I remember, the time of the broadcast would be used as the decode key for the body of 'content to follow'. As in someone on a public forum (state TV weather report?) mentions "The moon will be at it's maximum brightness tonight at 12:27".

Night time for a surfacing comm-sub/drone within range of the handset that could render the message then retrans via more(secure) sophisticated means to an accompanying launch transport.

Contrary to some opinion a brilliant moon creates great reflections on the surface to hide a passive antenna trailing parallel to the wave troughs.

More Dem election year fraud, this time felons in Philadelphia, PA
[Wash Free Beacon] The city of Philadelphia is not removing incarcerated felons from its voter rolls despite being hit with a lawsuit, according to a watchdog group.

The Public Interest Legal Foundation, an Indiana-based election integrity group, sued the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in April over its questionable voter rolls. After meeting with city officials, the watchdog group announced that the city had not removed felons from those who are eligible to vote.

"After meeting with City officials, it has come to light that the City doesn't remove or even flag incarcerated felons who are ineligible to vote in Pennsylvania," the group said. "The number of incarcerated felons on the rolls and ineligible to vote likely numbers in the thousands. The Foundation is requesting urgent action from the Court to rectify the situation."

'Moderate' Paleo Authority Unveils statue of 'Frig Bomber' Who Murdered 15
[PJ] On July 4, 1975, in Zion Square in Jerusalem, a booby-trapped refrigerator exploded, killing 15 people and wounding 77.

The perpetrators were two Palestinians from the West Bank, one of whom escaped to Jordan. The other, Ahmad Jabara -- nom de guerre of Abu Sukkar -- was eventually apprehended, tried by an Israeli military court, and sentenced to life in prison.
Sukkar Avenue....very bad vibe. For now, we will go with the statue.
In 2003, under pressure from the Bush administration to make a "gesture" to the Palestinian Authority, Israel freed Sukkar, then 70, along with 99 other security prisoners.

Yasser Arafat, then head of the PA, showed his appreciation for Israel’s gesture by appointing the mass-murdering Sukkar as a special adviser. Since Sukkar's death on July 16, 2013, more honors have been heaped on the "refrigerator bomber" than almost any of us could ever hope for.

Apparently the Beest's VP nominee VA Sen.Tim Kaine likes free stuff
[Politico] Tim Kaine took advantage of the state's lax gift laws to receive an $18,000 Caribbean vacation, $5,500 in clothes and a trip to watch George Mason University play in the NCAA basketball Final Four during his years as lieutenant governor and governor, according to disclosures he filed.

Now a leading contender to be Hillary Clinton's running mate, Kaine reported more than $160,000 in gifts from 2001 to 2009, mostly for travel to and from political events and conferences, according to disclosures compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project. The givers included political supporters, a drug company that soon after bought a facility in Virginia, and Dominion, the state's biggest provider of electricity.

While legal under Virginia's unusually permissive ethics rules, the gifts could become attack-ad fodder after similar presents led to corruption charges for Gov. Bob McDonnell, whose conviction the Supreme Court overturned Monday. Republicans could also use the records to portray Kaine as part of the self-dealing establishment in a cycle animated by hostility toward the political class.

Trump says rise of terrorism threatens all civilized people
US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, commenting on the shooting attack in Munich in which at least eight people were killed on Friday, said the United States should do all in its power to keep out terrorism.

"This cannot continue. The rise of terrorism threatens the way of life for all civilized people, and we must do everything in our power to keep it from our shores," Trump said on Facebook.

...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
said Friday, but ruled out any troop deployment in the country.

"This morning at the defence council, I took the decision as part of the anti-ISIS coalition to make weapons available to Iraqi forces," Hollande said, using another name for IS.

"They will be there next month," he said following the meeting with a handful of ministers and the heads of the security forces.

An aide to the president said the weaponry would include artillery batteries and that La Belle France would also send military advisors to train Iraqi forces in using them. Hollande said he would also be sending the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the region "at the end of September".

The carrier "will allow us to intensify strikes against terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq using our Rafale jets," he said.

Hollande insisted that the move did not change the nature of La Belle France's military involvement in the region.

"We support our allies in Iraq and Syria but we are not deploying ground troops," he stressed. "We have advice to give and training to carry out, but it is not our soldiers fighting on the ground in Syria and Iraq."

Canada Military to Deploy 60 Medical Personnel to Iraq

Mexico President Voices 'Respect' for Trump
[AnNahar] Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto extended an olive branch to Donald Trump on Friday, voicing respect for the U.S. presidential candidate, whose anti-immigrant rhetoric has angered Mexicans.
So he's calculated that 1) Trump is serious about the wall 2) Trump is serious about having the Mexicans pay for it and 3) Trump might win...
One day after Trump accepted the Republican party's presidential nomination, Pena Nieto vowed to have a "frank and open dialogue" with whoever wins the November election, whether it is the real estate tycoon or Democratic rival Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as America's Blond Eminence and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Elihu B. Washburne ...
"To Mrs. Hillary Clinton and Mr. Donald Trump, I want to express my highest respect," Pena Nieto said at a White House presser with President Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
It was a change of tone from March, when Pena Nieto condemned Trump's "strident tone" and compared his rhetoric to the rise of Adolf Hitler
...late Fuehrer of Germany, founder of the Third Reich, currently communing with his pals Himmler and Heydrich. He is reincarnated every few days as a politician somebody doesn't like...
and Benito Mussolini
...former dictator of Italia. He perfected the idea of the corporate state and was all the vogue in intellectual circles until he lined up with Adolf in the Second World War. He wanted Italians to be figli de la lupa, and like the sons of wolves they turned on him when they finally got the chance. He ended his days dangling by his heels in a public square next to his mistress...
But Pena Nieto said Friday that he had "never done any finger-pointing" about a U.S. candidate and that his March remarks were "taken out of context."

"The Mexican government will work in a constructive manner and in good faith with whoever is elected," he said.

#2  Pena Nieto has finally come to understand that if the US charges everyone (without exception) $15 to enter the US from Mexico, and $15 to those who want to enter Mexico from the US, Trump will have his millions to build the wall. It would also slow daily tourism, and very likely reduce the number of Mexican workers who daily cross the US border to work in the USA. The next move would be to tax the railroad cars that enter the US from Mexico. Indeed, there are so many ways Mexico could be hit that Pena Nieto must be praying for a Hillary victory.

Russian Warplanes Targeted U.S., British Outpost in Syria
[AnNahar] Russian warplanes bombed a remote outpost in Syria used by elite U.S. and British forces last month as well as another site linked to the CIA, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The Journal, which cited U.S. officials as its source, said the previously unreported air strikes on June 16 and July 12 were part of a bid by Moscow to pressure Washington to cooperate more closely with it in the skies over Syria.

A contingent of about 20 British special forces had pulled out the day before the first attack on June 16, on a garrison about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the Jordanian border at At-Tanf, the report said.

U.S. officials and rebel commanders told the Journal that the outpost was hit with cluster munitions.

U.S. attempts to wave off the Russians failed to prevent a second air strike on the base, the report said.

About three weeks later, on July 12, Russian warplanes hit a rebel camp used by family members of CIA-backed fighters about 50 miles west of At-Tanf, the report said.

U.S. military and intelligence officials told the newspaper that the attacks hardened opposition at the Pentagon and the CIA to cooperating with the Russians.

But the White House and the State Department, seeking to avoid a military escalation, decided to pursue a compromise, it said.

Last week, U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
reached a provisional agreement with the Russians to join forces in strikes on Al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria.

Under the agreement, the Russians would halt air strikes against U.S.-backed rebels and restrain the Syrian air force in return for Washington easing Moscow's international isolation, the Journal said.

Aleppo Rebel Tunnel Blast Killed 38 Regime Forces
[AnNahar] Nearly 40 Syrian soldiers and pro-regime fighters were killed when rebels blew up a tunnel under a government position in Aleppo city, a monitor said Friday.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 38 members of government forces were killed in Thursday's blast, which brought down a building used by the regime in Aleppo's Old City. The monitor had earlier reported a toll of 14.

A video posted online by the Thuwwar al-Sham rebel group purported to show the incident, with members of the force walking though a long tunnel and preparing barrels full of explosives.

"We are now inside the tunnel that will be detonated soon, God willing, the tunnel under the traffic branch building, which is an important headquarters for the Assad regime and its mercenaries," a rebel says in the video. The footage then shows a massive blast leveling a multi-storey building, filmed from multiple angles.

"French, American and British soldiers are in the Benina base" near Benghazi, said air force chief Saqr al-Jaroushi, whose forces are allied with a government based out of the eastern city of Tobruk that is not recognized by the international community.

He said around 20 soldiers at the base were charged with "monitoring the movements of the Islamic State jihadists and how they store ammunition."

"There are no (foreign) pilots fighting in the place of our pilots and fighters," he said.

He added that other foreign military personnel were carrying out similar tasks at other bases and towns across Libya, including the capital Tripoli

He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Dallas police job applications surge after fatal ambush attacks
The Dallas Police Department, which was struggling to recruit officers, has seen a surge in job applications after the ambush shooting this month that killed five officers and brought global attention to the Texas city, officials said on Friday.

During the 12 days following the July 7 shooting, the department said it got 467 job applications, a 344 percent increase compared with the 136 in a similar period in June.

That is an average of 38.9 requests per day to become a police recruit compared with an average of 11.3 submissions a day for 12 days in June.

In recent months, the police department has had to cancel academy classes because there were not enough applicants.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Qatar says gives $30 mln to pay Gaza public sector workers
[Ynet] As Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, faces a budget shortfall and is unable to pay wages to its public sector workers, Qatar is stepping in to fill the wage gap; The funding is meant to '"alleviate suffering and financial distress.'

Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
said it would give $30 million to help pay the salaries of thousands of Gazoo Strip public sector Hamas workers left without a full wage package since 2013 on Thursday .

The donation was welcomed by Hamas, the Islamist group that dominates the enclave. They said it would help ease the wage shortages that have tested already strained relations with the US-backed Paleostinian Authority in the West Bank.

There was no immediate comment from Paleostinian Authority or Israel, who have long been suspicious of Qatar's regular donations to Hamas and other Islamist groups across the region.

The emir of the wealthy Gulf state, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, said the payment of 113 million riyals was meant to "alleviate suffering and financial distress", according to Qatar's state news agency, QNA.

A reconciliation pact signed in 2014 by the two sides raised hopes among Hamas that its 50,000 public sector employees' wages would be taken care of via the Paleostinian Authority (PA) payroll.

But the Paleostinian Authority cannot afford to pay all the extra workers. International donors who support the PA budget, including the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, say they want an audit of workers and cutbacks to the bloated payroll, which costs more than $2 billion a year.

The Hamas-hired public servants have grown restive and in 2014 protested over their lack of payment which is partly due to a continued blockade imposed on Gazoo by both Israel and Egypt.

"The July payment will be made in full immediately once the Qatari financial fund is received," Hamas' deputy finance minister, Youssef al-Kayyali said.

Qatar, which hosts the largest US air base in the Middle East, has for years preserved influence with Islamist forces across the region it believes are the long-term future.

The breadth and resilience of Qatar's links to Islamist groups including Egypt's Moslem Brüderbund, which has suffered a crackdown in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, fuels suspicions in other Gulf states.

Olde Tyme Religion
Don't blame Sykes-Picot
"ARROGANT TO the point of blindness," British diplomat Mark Sykes and his French counterpart Georges Picot "carved up the Ottoman empire, not unlike a butcher slicing up slabs of meat fresh out of the freezer," a British columnist charged recently.

The diatribe, leveled by Spectator columnist Taki Theodoracopulos, is shared by many, most notably Henry Kissinger, an authority on diplomatic Machiavellianism, who wrote of the Sykes-Picot deal ‐ a deal that had been meant to be kept secret ‐ that it was "the foundation for later wars and civil wars."

Though Sykes and Picot did not actually redo the atlas, but merely drew the line between the prospective British and French spheres of influence, their deal was soon fleshed out by the cartographers who penciled borders that later proved unworkable, and in some cases have also become irrelevant, from Libya to Iraq and Syria.

That is, of course, true. However, when seen in the broader context of post-colonial history, this external impact does not explain Arab civilization’s crisis, nor does it excuse it.

The stuffing by foreigners of local rivals into single polities did not cause the bloody Iran-Iraq War ‒ because the imperialists did properly separate the Persians and the Arabs ‒ nor could Europeans be blamed for the strife along the years between Morocco and Algeria, or Libya and Egypt, or Iraq and Kuwait, all of which pitted Sunni Arabs against each other.

In India, for instance, the British also bequeathed a sectarian tinderbox back when independence loomed, and the assassinated Mahatma Gandhi was but one of its victims. Conflict with Pakistan, the violent emergence of Bangladesh, and the unsolved dispute over Kashmir are also seen as colonialism’s farewell gifts.

However, the subcontinent has produced a generally accepted political framework where an agricultural revolution was followed by an industrial revolution that soon sparked much social mobility and expanding prosperity.

The same can be said of Vietnam, whose splitting and bleeding in the wake of foreign intrusions were followed by a post-ideological quest to manufacture, trade, profit, prosper and to live and let live.

The Arab Middle East did not follow these patterns.
The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.

Moslems seem to enjoy killing other Moslems, bombs in crowds, that sort of thing. Then use a fire hose to wash it all down the gutters and drains and plan to do it again in a week or so.
And ( besides ) the MS Media make a few bucks on the deal.

And it has been going on for how long, no end in sight , really.
Just Moslems killing Moslems. The religion of Peace, don'tcha know.Makes Sykes/Picot seem almost irrelevant and trivial, somehow. Much much too late to repeal or change now .

The house on the other side was occupied by young Black radicals with one or two serious Black Panther types.

We got along quite well with both. We helped the 'White' family shovel in the winter and mow in the summer. We co-hosted block parties with the radicals.

Everyone up and down the street were good neighbors, except the radicals kept 'borrowing' all of our beer.

#5  The comments to the article are interesting.

The consensus seems to be that the author is what she rails about. She is a striving middle class twit who is gentrifying a lower class black area cause she wants "authentic" culture.

#6  We discovered that gentrification is many things and moving parts, but it essentially boils down to white wealth pushing out black and brown residents from neighborhoods that had once been undesirable – because they were composed of black and brown residents.

no, it was because of the undesirable class and culture of the people, whether white, brown, black or green

#8  I once roomed close to work and bicycled in every day. The room was cheap and had become available because the prior tenant died from a gunshot. Neighbors were friendly and would cruise by and chat while I was out for my evening run.

When the days became shorter I switched to running in the mornings because after dark the animals would come out and throw empty cans of Colt 45 malt as they cruised by.

#2  She also said that I was a blasphemer, because I went to the police. No woman should report her own husband. The husband must be honored." — "Sali," in an apparent suicide note to her lawyer, Alexander Stevens. Emphasis added.

Could this help us explain the mystery and apparent hands-off status of the wives of Mateen and Tsarnaev? Has Sharia Law gained tacit or implied legal acceptance?

By the way, anyone who has ever used an interpreter should be aware of the inherent danger. While not one hundred percent foolproof, there are safeguards and reliability checks.

#3  how much of this kind of thing goes on at, say, Foggy Bottom?

Ask and ye shall receive, Bov dear. I was going to just do my standard bit about how after 9/11 American Jewish speakers of desired languages lined up in droves to volunteer as translators for the FBI, CIA, and DoD, only to be turned away when the Muslim translators refused to work with them, but I decided it was time to dig up the original reports in the archives. I'm rather dusty, but it's considerably worse than I remember, and not just Jews. Embarrassing for me, but worth it to get the thing right.

First from the archives. No doubt there's more to be found using different search terms, but this is a good enough start:

Spengler in 2013: One in five applicants for jobs at the Central Intelligence Agency have ties to Muslim terrorist organizations, according to the latest round of Snowden leaks.

And this barn-burner from 2015 -- email Fred to get access to his even more scathing in-lines: The Hidden Reason Why Americans Dislike Islam

#4  You can also get to the second article through the archives, which will give the whole thing without Fred's intercession -- click on the button near the top right on the front page, then scroll down to 12/11/2015. Not that it really addresses the translator issue, but it is wonderful.

I also googled the subject, to capture some of the articles I read over the years on the subject, and some I have no memory of, but as Rantburg limits how many links can be in a comment as a guard against spam, I give you these two:

WND in 2003 had a much-referenced article on the Arabic-speaking Jewish translator applicants, as well as several cases of Muslim translator misbehaviour at the FBI and the Army.

And this 2008 exhaustive round-up from the New English Review that is the author's response to a Congressional group's call for investigation into the Arab translator problem.

Malaysia in talks with Abu Sayyaf to free hostages
[IBT] The Malaysian government has begun negotiations with the kidnappers of five of its sailors, deputy home minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed has said. Mohamed added that the government had confirmed that the Abu Sayyaf Group was behind this latest abduction.

The Abu Sayyaf was reported to have abducted these five sailors from a tugboat in the bay of Dent Haven off Lahad Datu in the Malaysian state of Sabah on Monday.

Mohamed said the Malaysian government had taken over the negotiations to release the five abducted sailors after their kidnappers contacted their families. He said, "We know the people involved and we are negotiating with them. I hope any discussions made would not be highlighted in the media or any other form; what is more important is to secure the release of the victims."

Iraq
The Beatings Will Continue: Iraqi Edition

[ARA News] DUHOK – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) executed a young Iraqi man by throwing him from the top of a building on charges of being gay, activists reported on Friday.

The radical group arrested the man in southern Kirkuk under the pretext that he was a homosexual.

“He was thrown off a roof in front of dozens of people,” a local media activist told ARA News, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Then ISIS militants called on the people to stone the victim although he was already dead. They started to barbarically stone his corpse.”

Also, ISIS released footages of the execution, showing two masked militants throwing the young man off a roof. Other footages showed the victim while being stoned by local people.

“Civilians who live under ISIS suppression are forced to follow any order by the group, otherwise they could get killed,” head of Nineveh media centre Raafat al-Zarari told ARA News. “People sometimes have no choice but showing loyalty to ISIS. It’s a bitter reality in territories held by this terror group.”

The ISIS-linked Sharia Court had issued a decision to execute every gay man by throwing him from the top of a building, according to eyewitnesses.

Over the past three years, the extremist group has executed dozens of allegedly gay men in its areas of control in Syria and Iraq.

Betrayals, fake ISIS flags, unburied militants: A day with the Iraqi army
[RUDAW.NET] On a hill outside the village of Osaja the Iraqi soldiers produced an ISIS flag out of nowhere and gathered for a photo-shoot for the army cameraman.

Standing on the roof of a village home east of the Tigris River on Monday morning was a Kurdish soldier in khaki uniform, a red beret and a Kalashnikov dangling around his neck. He was looking at columns of thick black smoke rising into the sky from the town of Qayyarah (Gayara) 60 kilometers from djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
. ISIS bandidos Lions of Islam had set oil wells and manmade pools of crude oil on fire in order to avoid air strikes. Strong winds bent the smoke a hundred meters above the ground and shrouded the whole area in a depressing blanket of dark clouds.

US offered to help on Gülen’s extradition, Turkish FM confirms
This is a bit long but take a look: you won't find this in the American newspapers. This is how Turkey is going to get Gulen extradited. We won't just hand him over but we'll show the Turks, step by step, what they have to do...
[Hurriyet] The United States made an offer to form a working group composed of officials from its foreign affairs and justice departments in order to assist Turkey in preparing its formal request for the extradition of Pennsylvania-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, who is believed to have orchestrated the July 15 failed coup attempt, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has confirmed.
That's how Obama quietly does what Yippie wants. Oh no, we won't accede to the demand, we'll just grease the skids...
“We want to bring the ringleader of FETÖ [Fethullahist Terror Organization] to Turkey. Our demand from the U.S. is plain and simple. They should not harbor this person who attempted to make a coup,” Çavuşoğlu said in an interview with state-run broadcaster TRT Haber on July 22, a day after U.S. State Department Spokesperson John Kirby remarked on Turkey’s extradition request.

Underlining that the Foreign Ministry and the Justice Ministry were closely monitoring the process, the foreign minister warned against the possibility that Gülen may flee to another country in order to avoid being extradited and called on Washington to take necessary measures against it.

So that fellow has just been.... hanging out here for 17 years and has never bothered to become a U.S. citizen? For the sake of argument, how is it he has any protection from extradition ?

Nothing heard from Incilrik Air Base. Are our airmen and civilians still confined to base? No electricity, food, incoming/outgoing flts etc? Appears to be a hostage situation that nobody in the regime (our regime) is discussing. Or do I need to be brought up to date ?

India-Pakistan
Shocking video of police torture fails to stir department
[DAWN] RAHIM YAR KHAN: A sickening video clip of police officials humiliating and torturing a young man and his veiled sister in the Sadiqabad city has gone viral, creating outrage on social media.

Dawn learned Shahzad Lateef was riding a cycle of violence with his sister on Tuesday (July 19) when police constables Shabbir Ahmed and Qasim Raza with police volunteer Yaseen stopped them in Madina Town.

Police officials asked them about their relation with each other. When the motorcyclists told them, that they were siblings, coppers asked them to go to the Sadiqabad City cop shoppe for further interrogation.

Shehzad insisted on knowing about the reason which enraged the constables who started beating him, slapped his sister and abused them. The beating attracted a crowd there, and one of the onlookers recorded the scene and later uploaded it on a social media site. Seeing a crowd there, the coppers let them go.

When Shehzad approached them for a case against their colleagues, Sadiqabad City police refused his application.

Shehzad went to the deputy superintendent of police office only to learn that he busy in an operation against dacoits. Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was counting their remaining cannon balls and not liking the results...
different TV channels aired the footage which pressurised the bigwigs.

On Wednesday, Superintendent of Police Irfan Samoon suspended Shabbir and Qasim from service.

Spokesperson for police Arshad Nawaz told Dawn Mr Samoon would initiate an inquiry against the police employees seen in the footage soon as currently he was busy in the recruitment process.

The City station house office told Dawn that he was out of the town when the incident occurred but senior coppers were looking into the matter.

Stop inciting violence, India tells Pakistan
[DAWN] NEW DELHI: India accused Pakistain on Thursday of harnessing "UN-designated terrorists" to lead alleged incitement to violence in the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmire even as it reminded Islamabad to ensure full protection to its diplomatic mission against violence by protesters.

Responding to media questions, a foreign ministry spokesperson spelled out a familiar demand, which usually surfaces when ties between the two countries hit a fresh low -- that Pakistain should vacate its side of Kashmire.

"We have seen reports about rallies, events and statements related to Jammu & Kashmire in Pakistain and [Azad Kashmire] over the last two days. We have also noted that the events were led by UN-designated terrorists, who had in the past protested the elimination of dreaded Lions of Islam including the late Osama bin Laden
... who used to be alive but now he's not...
and Taliban leader Akhtar Mansour in Pakistain," the front man said in a statement.

He said India condemned the encouragement and support, which "such Lions of Islam and their activities" receive from Pakistain.

"We once again ask Pakistan to stop inciting and supporting violence and terrorism in any part of our country and refrain from its deplorable meddling in our internal affairs in any manner."

The observance of "Kashmir’s Accession to Pakistan Day" exposes Pakistain’s longing for the territory of Jammu & Kashmire," the front man said.

"India demands that Pakistain must fulfil the obligation to vacate its illegal occupation of POK."

Indian Congress leader calls for ‘plebiscite’ in held Kashmir
[DAWN] Congress leader Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia called for plebiscite in India-held Kashmire, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Thursday.

"In Kashmire today, there is a need for ’rai shumari’," Scindia said in his address to Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament.

"PDP-BJP government has shed all the principles. Administration is divided and the government, which should support people, is using weapons against them."

Jammu and Kashmire People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in a coalition government in the disputed territory.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
hours after his address in the parliament, Scindia had to issue a clarification, saying that by rai shumari he meant "dialogue".

"I have never said there should be plebiscite. I have said there should be dialogue," Scindia was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats Chumbaloni was staring into a hole that was just .45 inch in diameter and was less than three feet from his face ...
authorities in India-held Kashmire have shut down printing presses and temporarily banned newspapers from publishing in a sweeping information blackout after days of anti-India protests left dozens of people dead in the region.

Local human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
groups and newspapers say at least 40 have died in festivities between protesters and security forces.

Waiting for the day Kashmir becomes Pakistan: Nawaz
[DAWN] Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
, while addressing a public gathering here on Friday after the PML-N's Azad Jammu and Kashmire electoral win, said: "We are waiting for the day Kashmire becomes Pakistain."

In his first public address following his return from London after open-heart surgery in May, Nawaz urged Kashmiris "not to forget those in held Kashmire who are sacrificing their lives to their movement for freedom".

"Their movement for freedom cannot be stopped and it will be successful. You are aware of how they are being beaten and killed. All our prayers are with them and we are waiting for the day Kashmire becomes Pakistain."

PML-N is set to form the next government in AJK as the unofficial results of a general election for 41 direct seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly on Thursday suggested a landslide victory for the party.

Arabia
Yemen National Delegation: Saudi-led Intensified Strikes Dangerous Escalation
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Yemen's national delegation warned against intensified strikes by Saudi-led coalition as dangerous escalation against the Arab impoverished country.

In a statement on Friday, the national delegation representing Ansarullah revolutionary group and allies, said the Saudi-led coalition carried out more than 75 strikes in several areas across the country, killing and injuring dozens of civilians.

The strikes also targeted and injured members of ceasefire committee and Saada mayor as they were overseeing field efforts aimed at implementing ceasefire.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter awoke groggily, his hand still stuck in the Ming vase...
the national delegation noted that the Saudi-led coalition has been going ahead with mobilization in a bid to achieve field achievements on ground against the Yemeni army and the popular committees.

"This military escalation represents flagrant violation of the ceasefire in force since April 10, as it reflects no sincere intention to ensure peace and stability in Yemen," the statement added.

"The national delegation strongly condemns such dangerous escalation, and calls on the international community to hold responsibility in a bid to stop these developments, especially that they coincide with peace talks in Kuwait."

The national delegation has been for weeks engaged in UN-sponsored peace talks with Saudi-backed exiled government in Kuwaiti capital.

Sadr: Shiite militias will participate in Mosul offensive
[RUDAW.NET] Shiite holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
... the Iranian catspaw holy man who was 22 years old in 2003 and was nearing 40 in 2010. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah...
announced that Shiite militia forces will participate in the upcoming djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
offensive. He issued the announcement on Friday as his supporters gathered in Baghdad once again to protest against corruption and demand a technocrat government.

"This is a military order to Saraya al-Salam [the military wing of Sadr’s Mahdi army] to coordinate with (Iraqi) special and security forces to accept your service immediately and without delay," Sadr’s written statement said.

Forces of the Saraya al-Salam will be deployed to Sharqat in northern Salahadin province, north of Baghdad, to participate in the Mosul offensive, according to Sadr’s announcement.

Sunni groups have insisted that the Shiite militias should not participate in the operation to liberate the Sunni city of Mosul, noting the reports of abuses committed by Shiite militias in Fallujah.

Sadr’s declaration comes at a time when he and other Shiite authorities have threatened that they will deem the United States to be an occupying force if they attend the Mosul offensive. The US recently announced they will send an additional 560 troops to Iraq to assist with the operation to retake Mosul.

Meanwhile Sadr’s supporters gathered in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square on Friday once again.

Rudaw’s correspondent Bahman Hassan reported that Saraya al-Salam snuffies are securing the protest, unarmed and dressed as civilians.

Protestors were calling for corruption to be uprooted and a technocrat government installed, while chanting "Love to the nation."

Duterte ready to deliver BBL to MILF
[Inquirer] There is enough land in the Philippines for all, including the Bangsamoro people, President Duterte said on Friday.

Praising Moro Islamic Liberation Front leader Al Haj Murad for pursuing peace talks, Duterte said that he was ready to give the MILF the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) it wanted but without the contentious provisions deemed unconstitutional.

The proposed BBL, written by negotiators after the signing of a peace agreement in 2014, would establish an autonomous Bangsamoro region in Mindanao. But the investigation of a battle between elite police forces and Moro rebels in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, in January last year that left 44 police commandos, 17 MILF fighters and three civilians dead delayed BBL deliberations in Congress, and the legislature adjourned in February without passing the proposed charter.

Duterte noted that there were warnings of a return to war if Congress did not pass the proposed BBL. The MILF stood by its promise to talk, he said.

Duterte declared, "I am ready to give the BBL minus the constitutional issues that are contentious and cannot be solved by an agreement between me [and the MILF]."

One such issue is the proposed regional armed forces and regional police, which breaks the chain of command and cannot be allowed, Duterte said. But he added he was willing to grant the unchallenged provisions of the BBL, and the same goes for Nur Misuari's Moro National Liberation Front faction, which signed a peace agreement in 1996.

Duterte said, "Even if you give them that part of the territory (the proposed Bangsamoro region), there’s enough land in the Philippines. The Philippines is vast. As long as there is no fighting, everybody can be accommodated, and we can establish industrial zones."

Thousands of families flee Mosul as UN warns of 'unprecedented refugee crisis'
[RUDAW.NET] Over 7,000 refugees from djinn-infested Mosul

city have arrived in Erbil in the past week ahead of an anticipated offensive to drive out ISIS holy warriors from the area, which is most likely to trigger a severe humanitarian crisis, according to UN officials in New York.

Kurdish Peshmerga officials say nearly half of the refugees are children, many of them are in poor health and undernourished after their long journey.

Lise Grande, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, said military operations to retake areas held by the Islamic State

Russia not ruling out sending more soldiers to Syria
[RUDAW.NET] Russia’s presidential front man, Dmitry Peskhov, said on Friday that Geneva talks on Syria will resume next week thanks to consultation among the US, Russia, and UN, adding that the prospect of sending more soldiers to Syria remains in place.

"When the decision was made to cut the number of personnel of our aviation contingent in Syria, you remember the statement of both the [Russian] president and the military, who said that the temporary infrastructure there [in Syria] remained and therefore the contingent could be increased very quickly, if necessary. This will be done in accordance with the relevant tasks," Peshkov said, according to Russian state Tass news.

"Such prospects [increasing Russian personnel in Syria] were declared by the president rather long ago," he added.

CPT Katie Wilder redux: Army accepts first wymn to attend Special Forces A&S
[Wash Times] JACKSONVILLE, Fla. | Two female Army officers will make history when they report to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in their first step toward earning the Special Forces tab and becoming Green Berets.

The female officers, whom Army officials declined to identify, could attend their first Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) class as early as October, though neither has yet received orders for training at Fort Bragg, The Washington Times has learned.

Col. Nestor A. Sadler, commandant of the Special Forces Regiment at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center School at Fort Bragg, confirmed that the two female candidates had accepted invitations for the SFAS class.

"Two females met the requirements for SFAS and were nominated by the ARSOF [Army Special Operations Forces selection] panel to attend SFAS. One candidate declined her invitation and withdrew from the process. Special Forces Branch asked why. On the last day to accept or decline the invitation, she changed her mind and accepted the invitation to attend SFAS," Col. Sadler said.

283 Presidential Guard soldiers in custody, nearly 11,000 passports cancelled
At least 283 of Turkey’s Presidential Guard Regiment soldiers have been taken into custody on Friday for their alleged links to the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), according to security sources, Anadolu reported.

Officials told Anadolu Agency the 283 soldiers were stationed at the Presidential Complex in Ankara. The suspects will be brought to the Palace of Justice in Ankara after police inquiry.

Turkey's government has repeatedly said the deadly coup attempt on July 15, which martyred at least 246 people and injured more than 2,100 others, was organized by followers of US-based preacher Fetullah Gulen.

Erdogan says Turkey's military to be restructured after abortive coup

[Ynet] Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told Reuters on Thursday that there were significant intelligence failures ahead of last week's attempted military coup and that the armed forces would quickly be restructured and have "fresh blood".

In his first interview since declaring a state of emergency following last Friday's abortive coup, Erdogan said a new coup attempt was possible, but would not be easy, saying "we are more vigilant".

Turkey sought arrest of 300 presidential guards: Official

[AlAhram] Turkey issued arrest warrants Friday for 300 members of the presidential guard after last week's attempted coup, a Turkish official said. At least 283 had already been detained, according to broadcaster CNN-Turk.

Meanwhile, the Turkish government has cancelled 10,856 passports "due to flight risk -- including close to 10,000 green/grey (official) passports", with the holders either in custody or on the run, the official said.

Turkey moves gendarmerie from army to interior ministry

[AnNahar] In the most significant institutional changes since the coup, powerful Interior Minister Efkan Ala said the gendarmerie would in future be part of the interior ministry and not the army. The gendarmerie, which looks after domestic security, had always been part of the military and its removal is a blow to the armed forces' clout after the coup.

"The gendarmerie will definitely be dependent entirely on the interior ministry," Ala said, quoted by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Turkish coup plotters to be tried in civilian courts
Establishing a special court to try suspects accused of plotting the failed July 15 coup attempt is not a necessity, Turkey’s justice minister has said, adding the trials will take place at civilian courts in the Sincan district of the capital Ankara.
That's one important step. The accused need lawyers, access to incriminating and exculpatory information, and judges who are not under Yippie's thumb...
“At this point, a special court is not needed. It is known which courts will try those who plotted a coup because a level of specialization has been achieved [among Turkish courts],” Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ said on July 22, during an interview with private broadcaster CNN Türk. The minister added they could consider not assigning additional duties to these courts in order to assist with their heavy workload.

A large courtroom will be needed to try hundreds of suspects and the trials will take place in the Sincan district of the capital Ankara, Bozdağ added.

“There is no way that legal cases with so many defendants can be heard at courthouses in Ankara. A space [is needed] for the defendants, their lawyers, observers and the relatives [of the accused]. It is obvious that we need a big space,” he said.

“As the [Justice] Ministry, we have taken the necessary measures and are continuing our efforts. The trial will be held within the boundaries of the Sincan district,” the minister stated.

Admitting that there were widespread fears the post-coup process could lead to a “witch hunt,” Bozdağ stressed that the judicial process would prevent innocent people from being punished.

“Anyone might have this fear. I have it too. Currently there may be information about some people, some may testify to police and others may be detained, but this process has just begun. The guilty will be separated from the innocent by the end of the decision-making process,” he said.
Looking at the numbers below, it does appear that the net was cast widely -- and quickly...
According to the latest figures reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency on July 22, more than 44,000 employees of state institutions have been suspended from their duties amid a nationwide probe into the coup attempt.

Some 44,530 employees of state institutions and organizations have been suspended from their duties over alleged links to the failed coup and U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, who is accused of orchestrating the attempt.

The Education Ministry announced that 21,738 civil servants working at the ministry had been suspended from their duties, 21,029 of whom were teachers, while the Defense Ministry said 262 military judges and prosecutors had been suspended from their duties.

al-Nusra executes 14 soldiers
BEIRUT: Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate Al-Nusra Front has executed 14 captured men it accused of fighting for President Bashar Assad, in retaliation for a regime advance near Damascus.

A video distributed via the group’s social media accounts showed 14 men, many with injuries including black eyes, stating their names as they lined up in pairs in front of the group’s black flag.

“Implementation of the death sentence against a group of ... regime prisoners because of their attack on Harira village in Wadi Barada,” text on the video read.

The footage showed the men being shot in the head simultaneously as they knelt in front of Al-Nusra fighters. Wadi Barada is an area in the Qalamun region of Syria’s Damascus province and is mostly controlled by an array of opposition groups, including Al-Nusra.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said that Al-Nusra had threatened to execute prisoners if government forces entered Harira.

The threats came in an earlier video in which one of the captured men warned that the group would kill 14 captives if the government attacked.

Al-Nusra is the local affiliate of Al-Qaeda and has regularly carried out executions of government forces.

In September 2015, it executed at least 56 regime fighters at a military airport in Idlib province in the northwest of the country.
More than 280,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011.

SDF capture ISIS militants fleeing Manbij dressed as women
[RUDAW.NET] Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighting to retake the northern Syrian city of Manbij from the Islamic State

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
have apprehended bandidos bully boyz fleeing the city disguised as civilians, some even in women’s clothing.

"As you see, today we caught 10 of them dressed as women," said an SDF soldier in a video released by the SDF Press Center. "We catch the same number almost every day, but recently with the pressure on them increasing, they flee in women’s clothing."

Earlier in July, Shervan Derwish, SDF spokesperson, said that ISIS bandidos bully boyz in Manbij were "carrying razors in their pockets in order to be able to quickly shave off their beards in order not to be identified," as they try to blend in with civilians fleeing the city.

The SDF, a coalition force dominated by the Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), launched an offensive to retake Manbij in late May. They have the city surrounded and have been steadily progressing into the centre. The high number of explosives laid by ISIS bandidos bully boyz and concern for the safety of civilians has meant that progress is slow but, Derwish said, ISIS knows they are defeated in the city. "They know that there is no hope and we are taking over."

Recently, the SDF offered Islamic State members a deal in an attempt to protect civilian lives ‐ they can leave Manbij within 48 hours, taking light weaponry, without being harmed.

Manbij is a strategic city for the Islamic State. It is 40 kilometres from the The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

-Syria border and lies on the route between Raqqa and Turkey, and thus to Europe. Brett McGurk, the US Special Envoy for the global anti-ISIS coalition, described it as a "foreign-fighter hub."

Capturing it will cut ISIS’ de facto capital of Raqqa off from this supply route, isolating the group. SDF forces have been steadily forcing ISIS back across Syria with continued US-led coalition air support.

American YPG volunteer killed in Manbij operation
[RUDAW.NET] The Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG) have confirmed the death of an American volunteer, Levi Jonathan Shirley, fighting in Rojava, northern Syria under the name Agir Servan. He was killed in the operation to liberate Manbij from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
In a video from the YPG, Shirley introduces himself as Agir, "means fire," he describes why he volunteered with the Kurdish force.

"I came here to Rojava to stop Da’esh, ISIS as it’s known more commonly in America. They’re my definition of pure evil. I don’t think good people in society can stick other people inside of a cage and set them on fire. So I came here to stop that."

Shirley, a former US marine born in Nevada, first joined the YPG in February 2015 and participated in an operation to retake the Kezwane Mountains, west of Hasaka, before returning home, the YPG reported.

He came back to Rojava in January this year and joined the defence of the Kobane and Cizire cantons of Rojava. When the YPG, as a member of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), launched an operation to retake the city of Manbij, west of the Euphrates, in late May, Shirley joined the operation.

"Hevale Agir was known for his discipline and sense of responsibility. His style and personality were a source of strength, motivation, and morale for his friends. In the fight, Hevale Agir was known and respected as a brave and altruistic person," reads a statement issued by the YPG on Thursday.

"We can say that Martyr Agir strengthened our brotherhood and fought for the freedom of an oppressed people. The sacrifice of our comrade Agir has enriched the democratic revolution being fought in Rojava, His name has been written in the history of our brotherhood."

Shirley was killed on July 14.

Macer Gifford, eulogizing his friend of Shirley in a statement published by the YPG on Thursday, said, "He came to fight and participate in the destruction of one of the most vicious ideologies of hate this world has ever seen."

"When Americans hear about his sacrifice, I hope it gives them great pride. We are one human race that shares one planet. It’s about time people realized that liberty and justice aren’t just words, they’re a birth right."

#1  In 1939, many Americans could not wait for 1941, and joined the RAF etc to get in the fight. Some are making a similar decison here. A free Kurdistan is long overdue, and I bow my head to those who would fight for that. They are, unfortunately, gonna get screwed as always.

Europe
Five charged over France truck attack
[YAHOO] Five suspects have been formally charged over the truck attack in the French Riveria city of Nice that killed 84 people, the Gay Paree prosecutor said,

Mohammed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who mowed down crowds of people enjoying a Bastille Day fireworks display, had long plotted the carnage, prosecutor Francois Molins said.

The revelations come as the French government continues to be plagued by questions over possible security failings, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into potential oversights.

Molins said photos on Bouhlel's phone showed he had likely already staked out the same July 14 event in 2015.

It also emerged that one of the five suspects in jug, a Tunisian named Mohammed Oualid G., had filmed the scene the day after the carnage, as it crawled with paramedics and journalists.

The five were brought before anti-terrorism judges late Thursday and charged.

They are 22-year-old Franco-Tunisian Ramzi A., 37-year-old Tunisian Chokri C., 40-year-old Tunisian Mohammed Oualid G., 38-year-old Albanian Artan H., and his wife Enkeledja Z. who holds both French and Albanian nationality.

None were known to intelligence services, and only Ramzi A., who was born in Nice, had a criminal record, for robbery and drug offences.

He led police to discover a Kalashnikov and a bag of ammunition on Thursday, however the purpose of the weapons was unclear.

Ramzi, Chokri and Oualid were charged with being accomplices to murder by a terror group.

Ramzi and the Albanian couple faced a second charge, of breaking the law on firearms in relation to a terrorist crime. They are accused of providing Bouhlel with the gun he fired at coppers before he was rubbed out.

More than 400 Sherlocks have been poring over evidence since the grisly attack last Thursday, the third in La Belle France in 18 months, and it was analyses of Bouhlel's telephone records that led them to the five suspects.

While the Islamic State

group claimed the attack, describing Bouhlel as a "soldier", Sherlocks have not found direct proof of his allegiance to the jihadists.

Many people interviewed by Sherlocks described the Tunisian father of three as "someone who did not practise the Moslem religion, ate pork, drank alcohol, took drugs and had an unbridled sexual activity", Molins said earlier this week.

However initial details of the investigation revealed Bouhlel had been fascinated with jihad for a while.

In May last year, he took a photo of an article about the drug Captagon, an amphetamine used by jihadists in Syria.

Syrian refugees dying in harsh conditions at closed Jordanian border
[RUDAW.NET] Syrian children and the elderly are dying from lack of water, food, and medical care at the Jordanian border, which officials closed in late June after a suicide boom-mobileing killed six soldiers. Aid groups are calling for the international community to take urgent action to save lives.

"Tens of thousands of people are in need of urgent assistance in a border area between Syria and Jordan. They are living in extremely harsh conditions in a desert area known as 'the berm'. The vast majority are women and kiddies, who are seeking sanctuary from the ongoing violence in Syria," stated the aid agency International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) on Wednesday.

Medical aid agency Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF, Doctors Without Borders) has called for the urgent medical evacuation of those who need life-saving health care, which they can provide at the Ramtha government hospital five kilometres away where they opened an emergency trauma surgery.

"The closure of the borders means that the most vulnerable victims of the conflict ‐ those badly injured by the war ‐ no longer have the chance to survive," Luis Eguiluz, head of mission in Jordan for MSF, said on Wednesday.

Jordan closed the border and declared it a militarized zone after seven of its soldiers were killed in a suicide kaboom on June 21. It has blocked all food and medical aid from crossing the border where some 70,000 Syrians, including 30,000 children, are gathered.

Limited water supplies are permitted across the border but the situation is now so desperate that some people are returning to war-ravaged Syria, Gerry Simpson of Human Rights Watch

This Week in Guns, July 23rd, 2016

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

Housekeeping Note: AK prices have spiked to a new record high this week after reaching a new high last week. The reporting of prices for used rifles for private sale reflects decisions based on the perceived value of the firearm. Why the AK has spiked, I have zero idea, especially in an environment in which the AR has received so much attention.

Recall last fall, when we witnessed a massive record setting drop in prices for AR-10 style semiautomatics. Those prices have recovered to a level still $99 below the current median price average. I know no reason for why the AR-10 is so much cheaper than nine months ago.

Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president of the United States stood on the podium last Thursday night and proudly declared he won the endorsement of the National Rifle Association. The NRA doesn't give me a warm feeling because of the group's tendency to endorse candidates even though they are anti firearms.

The declaration, made days before Trump's acceptance speech said that Trump will protect the 2nd Amendment. Actually, whether or not Donald Trump is president, the only people who can protect their right to keep and bear arms are the people themselves. As a personal matter, I don't want to have my rights protected by a New York Rockefeller-style liberal who in the past has pressed for more laws against gun owners. His endorsement was not so much a come-to-Jesus moment but an open-the-door-for-Donald moment.

And as if to underscore what I have been saying about leftists and their firearms laws, Massachusetts attorney general Maura Healey said in a Boston Globe opinion piece last Wednesday that as long as AR and AK parts can interchange with other brands and styles, those weapons will be considered "assault weapons" and will be outlawed. The great cry from conservatives was that Healey was rewriting law, which is pretty funny. The whole deck of firearms laws intended to constrict sale and transport of firearms between states has rewritten the Constitution for more than 100 years.

The Massachusetts Assault Weapons Ban is nothing more than a state sponsored assault on firearms owners under the color of law. Leftists don't like semiautomatic rifles such as the AR or AK and they really don't like their owners, and they will use their offices to steal firearms and murder firearms owners if they resist.

Laws, all the laws, should be subject to the consent of the governed, especially when it comes to rights enshrined in the Constitution. No free man should have his personal property taken away, especially property explicitly defined as a right in the Constitution.

Next week the despotic party will have their little meeting, in which they will conspire to use the national government to further their agenda, turning the rest of us into even more wretched serfs.

Fun times.

Loads.

Munich shooting update -- Saturday am
Suspect dead, police give all clear

[AyPee] A gunman opened fire in a crowded Munich shopping mall and a nearby McDonald's Friday night, killing nine people and wounding at least 10 others before killing himself, said authorities who called the rampage an act of terrorism.

Police gave a "cautious all clear" early Saturday morning, more than seven hours after the attack began. They said a body found near the scene was that of the shooter and he appeared to have acted alone.

Witnesses had reported seeing three men with firearms near the Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall, but police said on Twitter that "as part of our manhunt we found a person who had killed himself - the person is likely to have been the attacker who, according to the current state of the investigation, acted alone."
So, what about the other two guys? This is much like what happened in Nice, where supposed accomplices suddenly weren't accomplices any more...
And the Neo-Nazis. Don't forget them.
They lifted a shutdown of all public transport in the Bavarian capital, and said more details would be disclosed at a press conference later in the morning.

Merkel to hold security council meeting in wake of Munich attack

[EN.TREND.AZ] German Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold a security cabinet meeting on Saturday to assess the situation following the deadly shooting in Munich, Merkel’s chief of staff Peter Altmaier said on public television, Sputnik reported. Altmaier told ZDF public television on Friday that Merkel was being "constantly briefed" on developments in the southern city, where police say up to three gunmen are still at large.

"The cabinet ministers concerned are on their way to Berlin," he added.

Munich shooting - police say suspect killed, 'no indication' of other shooters

[DeutscheWelle] Police have issued a cautious all-clear after a shooting at a shopping center in Munich. Ten people are dead, one a suspect. For several hours, the Bavarian capital was put into lockdown.

What we know so far:

  • Police say a suspect committed suicide, and that they now believe he had acted alone. There was "no indication" of other shooters, after probing two false leads, Munich's police chief said. Police had shot at him before he apparently turned his own gun on himself.

  • Ten people, including the suspect, have so far been confirmed killed in the shooting at the Olympia shopping center in the north of Munich. The attack took place shortly before 6 p.m. local time.

  • At least 16 people were also injured, with Munich hospitals calling in extra staff to respond.

  • Police said they currently believe that the attacker was an 18-year-old German-Iranian who had lived in Munich "for a long time," but are still conducting checks. The motive was "unclear" at this point.

  • Public transport in and around the city was suspended for several hours but restarted early on Saturday morning. Locals were ordered to stay indoors by police, who declared an acute terror threat.

  • During Friday evening's major mobilization in Munich, more than 2,300 emergency services personnel were on duty. These included Munich police, elite units from Bavaria and the states of Baden Württemberg and Hesse, the federal police's elite GSG9 units, and Austria's special taskforce Cobra.

    [DailyMail]
  • Witnesses said that the shopping centre gunman screamed 'I'm German' and 'Allahu Akbar' before shooting

  • Shooter reportedly fled after his shooting spree on the city underground network, which has now been shut down

  • His body was found half a mile from the scene.

  • Police are investigating a fake Facebook advert which offered free food at the McDonald's where a gunman killed the first of his nine victims.

  • The shooter was not previously known to police and there was no evidence of any links to terrorist organizations, Andrae said.

#10  Who Else? Americans. Specifically Americans Anniversary at the Olympics.

Newc, when we lived in Germany, it was the German mothers in our playgroup who insisted on meeting at McDonalds. The Americans were appalled by the idea, wanting to experience the real Germany, and in general having bigger apartments or even houses with gardens which had room for a group of small children to play.

Ditto when road tripping across Europe, my Czech au pair girl would insist on stopping along the way only at McDonalds for pit stops and quick meals, which drove the American soldiers she was travelling with bonkers. But she had been a professional tour guide, and explained that only McDonalds was consistently cheap, clean, trustworthy, and quick -- all important when heading toward the next adventure.

[FreeBeacon] White House plans for a radical shift in U.S. nuclear policy came under fire from the military leaders who voiced concerns to Congress on Thursday about adopting a so-called no-first-use weapons policy.

    Iraq
Mosul minorities call for independent administration post-ISIS
[RUDAW.NET] Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani expressed his support for establishing a protected area for the Christian community in Nineveh to be run by the joint administration of different entities from djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
. His support was made during a July 16 meeting with the heads of the Armenian and Assyrian parties where they exchanged views on the future of Mosul and management of the city after its liberation from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
    (ISIS).

Barzani asked them to put together a proposal to present for discussions with Baghdad and other related parties. This suggestion has sparked different reactions within Iraq’s diverse factions.

Christian and Shabak representatives from Mosul welcomed the call and stated they too want to have their own province and administration after the liberation of Mosul.

"After the arrival of ISIS to the area and the support many Sunnis gave to ISIS in the region, this caused distrust between entities so it is impossible to live together as before," Joseph Slewa, a Christian member of the Iraqi parliament told Rudaw.

He asked for the establishment of a Christian province in the Nineveh plains under UN supervision.

"There should be agreement with other entities such as Kakais, Kurdish Yazidi and Shabaks, to establish the province that for eight years should be under UN supervision. Then the people can decide about the fate of the province, whether they want to stay with Iraq or join the Kurdistan Region," Slewa said.

There are 56 Shabak villages in Nineveh which are in Qaraqush, Nimrud, Bartle, Tel Kaif and Bashiqa. The Shabak are an ethnic and cultural minority living in northern Iraq.

Salim Jumaa, a Shabaki MP in the Iraqi parliament, suggested that before the Mosul operation takes place there should be a road map that all the entities of Nineveh agree to.

"So far we have 1384 deaders and 208 Shabaks who are still held captive by ISIS and their fate is unknown. Therefore we won’t stay with Mosul. We want to incorporate with the KRG [Kurdistan Regional Government] and become the fifth province of the Kurdistan Region," Shabaki told Rudaw.

But the State of Law coalition, headed by former Iraqi prime minister Nuri Al-Maliki, considers this proposal a plan to divide the province.

"Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani has his own intentions and has his eye on Nineveh province. He wants to divide it and control part of the Nineveh land and incorporate it into Kurdistan. That’s why he asked for an early agreement before the Mosul liberation," Awatif Naama, an MP from the State of Law, told Rudaw.

Mosul is the second largest province in Iraq. In June 2014, the Islamic State seized control. The city of Mosul and some areas of the province are still to be liberated from the terrorist group.

    Hillary walks with Kaine
    Yes, that's the Drudge headline...
Hillary Clinton named Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia to be her running mate Friday, selecting a battleground state politician with working-class roots and a fluency in Spanish, traits that she believes can bolster her chances to defeat Donald J. Trump in November.

Mrs. Clinton’s choice, which she announced via text message to supporters, came after her advisers spent months poring over potential vice-presidential candidates who could lift the Democratic ticket in an unpredictable race against Mr. Trump. In the end, Mrs. Clinton decided Mr. Kaine, 58, a former governor of Virginia who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and speaks fluent Spanish, had the qualifications and background and the personal chemistry with her to make the ticket a success.

    The Grand Turk
CHP leader: don't turn post-coup probe into ‘witch hunt’
The leader of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has urged the government not to turn the investigation into the recent failed coup attempt into a “witch hunt,” calling on it to respect democratic norms and the rule of law.

“Any kind of wrongdoing with regard to legal proceedings would only help strengthen the coup mentality. We should carefully avoid this. We want all those who are prosecuted on coup-related charges to be tried in line with democracy and the rule of law. We don’t want a witch hunt,” CHP head Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu told private broadcaster NTV in an interview on July 22.

“We are a strong state with the rule of law. There have been setbacks in democracy from time to time but Turkey’s face has always been turned toward democracy,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

On the ongoing discussion about whether Turkey should reinstate the death penalty for charges of treason, the CHP head called for restraint.

“The government should avoid the influence of mass psychology. Those who rule the country should keep their common sense. If you start to rule the country based only on calls from the streets than you wouldn’t be able to escape chaos,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

He also recalled the CHP’s long-running opposition and warnings over the privileges given to Gülen sympathizers in key appointments within the judiciary and other state institutions.

“While you were appointing 160 people to the Supreme Court of Appeals, I shouted from the parliamentary rostrum, ‘You’re appointing 160 militants.’ But it was me at that time who received all criticism. Now I’ve been proven right. But that is not enough. We should ask who made all these appointments,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

He also stressed that recent events show the importance of a strict implementation of meritocracy in state appointments, and the abandonment of “ruling the state like a political party.”

“We can’t resolve problems by dismissing a few people. We first have to change our mentality. We should know that we can’t rule the state like we rule political parties,” the CHP leader said.

Turkish medical staff leave Somalia after order
The staff members of the Turkish-run Deva hospital began on Friday to leave Somalia following an order from Somali federal government.

The general director of Deva hospital Dr Mohamed Al Berto told Radio Shabelle that they are unhappy to depart from Mogadishu and stop giving medical assistance to the needy Somalis.

“We have come to Somalia in a critical time of humanitarian crises in 2011, to help our Somali bothers and give them a medical support,” Dr Mohamed said.

He said Deva hospital was shut and they the medical workers were ordered to leave Somalia within a week by Somali government after the failed military coup in Turkey last weekend.

“I have been in Mogadishu for 4 years, as a medical doctor serving at the Turkish-run Deva hospital in Mogadishu, I used to help people who were in dire need of medical support,” he added.

A Turkish urologist Dr Halim Yilmas was among those left Mogadishu on Friday, and he told Radio Shabelle before his departure that all staff members are very sorry about the Somali government decision.

Last Saturday, the cabinet ministers of Somalia ordered Turkish staff members of Nile Academy to leave Somalia in a week’s time, associating with Fathullah Gullen linked with the failed military coup in Turkey.
Not clear if the medical team was in fact associated with Gullen or whether this is some canoodling by the Somalis and Erdogan...

    -War on Police-
CPD reviewing officer's race-fueled Facebook post
[FOX19] A Cincinnati Police officer is under review after a Facebook comment appearing to reference white coppers "looking for a reason to kill a black man."

Lt. Steve Saunders declined to name the officer, but confirmed administrators are reviewing the post, which was sent to FOX19 NOW by anonymous sources. It shows the commenter's name as Freddie Vincent, an officer with District 5, sources say.

The post begins with a message to "all my Afro America friends and family" about interacting with white coppers.

"Make sure that you are in a public place ,and comply to all of their commands, because they are looking for a reason to kill a black man. And always keep your hands in the air,and never resist," it reads.

It comes after high-profile police killings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota earlier this month.

"I'm so tired of cops using these famous words "I was in fear of my life". I'm praying for Louisiana," the post says.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Chief Eliot Isaac said the comments are under review as they related to the department's social media policies. His entire statement read:

"The Cincinnati Police Department strives to maintain a culture of professionalism, as well as transparency and accountability for our actions. I am proud of the work of the men and women of the Cincinnati Police Department and our efforts to work collaboratively with the community.

We are aware of a recent post to a commonly used social media site by one of our officers that refers to an interpretation of a law enforcement officer’s actions. The comments that were posted are under review as they relate to our Social Media procedure and our Rules and Regulations."

Hollande: French Artillery to Join Iraqi Army in Fight against ISIL
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] La Belle France will send Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to assist US-led anti-ISIS coalition in Iraq and Syria in September, French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
was quoted by Sputnik news agency as saying.

La Belle France will also send artillery to Iraq in August to help the Iraqi army fight ISIS terrorists, the President added.

"The Defense Council and I made a decision this morning to provide Iraqi forces with artillery as a part of anti-ISIS efforts. The artillery will be delivered in August," Hollande said.

The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will be sent to the region in September, the President added.

"The Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier will arrive in the region by the end of September. It and our Rafale aircraft will allow to intensify our strikes against ISIS positions in Syria and Iraq," Hollande said in a televised statement.

    However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
La Belle France "will not deploy ground troops," Hollande said.

"We support the operations in Syria and Iraq, but will not send our troops. We have advice to give, training to provide, but we will not deploy men on the ground," Hollande stressed.

Iraqi forces are carrying out operations in Nineveh in preparation for an assault on djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Iraq's second-largest city that has been under ISIS control since 2014.

Half-Eaten Burger Comes Back To Bite Chicago Man In Robbery Spree
[CHICAGO.CBSLOCAL] A half-eaten hamburger led authorities to a reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
man who acted as the getaway driver in a series of bank robberies in western Michigan over the last two years, federal prosecutors said.

Dominick T. Johnson, 34, was sentenced Wednesday to 72 years and eight months in prison for the heists he carried out with his 24-year-old half-brother Nathan Benson, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Prosecutors say Johnson was the brain and the wheels behind the three successful bank robberies that happened between May 2014 and January 2015 in Kalamazoo County, about 150 miles northeast of Chicago.

In two of the robberies, Johnson listened in on a cellphone from a car while Benson forced employees into bank vaults at gunpoint, prosecutors said. Cellphone tower data placed him near the banks at the time of the crime.

While speeding away from one robbery in Oshtemo Township, Johnson apparently tossed "a partially eaten hamburger" from the vehicle, and Sherlocks were able to pull his DNA from it, prosecutors said.

Bad guys claim Syrian jet downed
HOMS – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) have shot down a warplane for the Syrian army in the central province of Homs. The group has also bombed Syrian army basis in Homs countryside, activists and media sources reported on Friday.

ISIS fighters launched a mortar attack on Syrian army basis in the vicinity of al-Bara town in Homs province.

“The attack resulted in the death of nine soldiers and the injury of several others, beside the destruction of two military vehicles and a number of machine guns,” media activist Amro al-Hussein told ARA News, citing officials in the Syrian army.

In the meantime, the pro-ISIS Amaq agency released images showing a destroyed Syrian warplane, saying it crashed after ISIS militants hit it with a rocket.

“The warplane was hit after entering the airspace of Jib al-Jarrah district in Homs,” al-Hussein said.

    Pro-women laws pass first hurdle
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary body consisting of politicians from both houses of parliament on Thursday unanimously cleared two pro-women bills, aimed at plugging loopholes in the law regarding ’honour’ killing and rape.

The anti-honour killing bill aims to prevent the killing of women in the name of honour by making the crime a non-compoundable offence.

The proposed legislation withdraws the provision of ’out-of-court’ settlement that leads to the release of convicts, recommending a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison even if the accused is pardoned by the family of an honour killing victim. Earlier, the term was 14 years.
